This Cape Dory 30 powerboat is 35 years old, so there was a lot to talk about. His detailed 55 page report, with text and photos, listed what was in good shape (his term is "serviceable"), what needed fixing, and what should be looked at further. It was a roadmap for making a sturdy old boat ready for sea and fit for the 350 mile trip from San Francisco Bay to its new home in Southern California. The cost of the survey was a bit lower than the other two I considered. That wasn't a factor in my choice of Chris - that was based on the sample surveys I saw - but it might be another reason for you to check him out.

The entire experience was a disaster, characterized by zero communication, complete disregard for customer service, and blatant unprofessionalism. When I first met Lou, he seemed friendly, but then I was hit with a cloud of marijuana smoke following him out of his office. Fine, I don't judge, but it's hard to trust someone who can't stay sober enough to run a business. When my boat trailer was towed to GT Boats, Lou had promised to move my boat and trailer to the back of the shop within 30 minutes and find a place for it. I left it in his hands and awaited for his update. However after a few days with no updates, no returned calls, and no communication whatsoever, I got suspicious. I stopped by at 6 a.m. to find my boat still sitting on the street--4 days later. I immediately called Lou from my cell phone, but it went straight to voicemail. When I called from my work phone, he picked up right away. I asked why I hadn't received any updates and why my boat was still on the street. He gave me the excuse that he was still looking for parts and claimed he'd move my boat at once. I told him I was worried about my gear being stolen, and he assured me not to worry. At that point, I realized I couldn't trust this guy to do the work he promised. Three days later, my boat was still sitting on the street 1 full week after dropping it off, so I called a tow company to take it away. Lou's either scamming people or too busy getting high to actually run a business. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs.

Specifically, at the recommendation of Webasto, and the Certified Webasto installer out of Seattle (Everett Yacht Service), and KKMI (one of the SF Bay area's oldest and most reputable boatyards), I used Surf & Turf Refrigeration & HVAC. Each of these references recommended Surf & Turf's proprietor without hesitation. Indeed, in my subsequent experience, Dylan Russell was extremely knowledgeable (especially about Beneteau/Jeanneau, and other higher-end manufacturers), experienced, professional, transparent, honest, and creative. At the very beginning of the process I communicated my #1 concern: No diesel fuel leaks (I have a daughter who is extremely sensitive to diesel). He encouraged me to tag along throughout the installation process, which was a great learning experience. Moreover, we now enjoy a toasty warm and dry boat.
