Their communication is broken with no information being utilized in either direction. Their pricing is predatory with additional charges, exorbitant charges added later. Mechanical work was incomplete and sloppy requiring rework. Pass through charges and transportation to work shop typical predatory, high double tap on outside work and max two way travel charges. Tech broke integral fuel line @ disassembly and wrote up complete fabrication, (lie). There is no reason to pay top dollar and be training their menial labor to train/play mechanic. While I still have my boat on the hard, I really want to give a review for Vee Jay's. I bought a 1976 Challenger 32 into their yard for a bottom job and engine work, as the boat was new to me and I wanted to be sure these two items were the first things completed on the to do list. Arturo, Christina and the crew have taken great care of my baby. Knowing I had a strict budget, the folks at this yard worked with me so that I could have her dialed in for this coming racing season while knowing she was also safe. This included installing new plumbing, replacing a very worn stuffing box, new bilge pump and topsides. After discussing with them the cost of having the work done over time with multiple haul outs we worked out a schedule to have the work done as I could afford it, without incurring a ton of lay days while waiting. Dollar for dollar this worked out great for me. THANK YOU!! I was hesitant, always having boats hauled by bigger names in the Bay, but our boat is at the Pittsburg Marina, so it was a matter of convenience as well. Arturo himself walked me through every phase, showing me what his team found and offering solutions that would fit my budget. I trust his work and his word. Playing dumb a few times, (I have been sailing 40+ years) I asked him to explain things and he was all about boiling it down so that even a new sailor could understand. If you want integrity, honesty and the feeling you are working with a good friend, this is the place to go. Oh and when I went to check how much water she took on after the storms, I found the bow of my boat lifted on the stand just enough to make sure any water that made its way inside didn't sit there for long. Frank and Vince are here because they love their customers and jobs. 1st time here and I can say I was impressed with the attention they gave me. I was in the process of buying my 1st boat, didn't know what to look for. The shop was booked and he wouldn't be able to get to it for a month or so. I wanted them to give it an inspection before purchase and establish some routine maintenance. He agreed if I left it he could check the compression and go from there. 2 days latter he called me back they were able to do the inspection told me the boat was in great condition and gave me an estimate for the maintenance I wanted done and preventative items and suggestions. Before I knew it I had bought a boat. Vee Jay was able to get my boat fixed and ready before Memorial Day weekend a whole 2 weeks early. She runs like a champ. Bad fix in water pipes. I asked if they would stand behind their repair work and they said "yes". I never heard back from them. I called several times and emailed. If I got them on the phone they would say, "We are really busy." They charged me for replacement Genset battery and claimed it was two years old. I showed them receipt from previous year they had installed it. Vince was nice and said "no problem". He would credit it back. Never received credit. Neighbors who have had work done there since report they are really busy and one guy reported it took 4 months to get his repair done. They just jump from one project to another. Frank, reportedly, is retired and doesn't even work there any more. Called and asked for estimate on bottom paint and they said they were busy and hung up. read more

When I spoke to Vince, he was very knowledgeable and told me to get boat to him ASAP and he will stop what he's doing and do an emergency haul out which he did. Upon his diagnoses of issue, he determined the shaft seal and cover were not torn and therefore salvageable. VERY honest!! He could of told me a much worst story and I would of paid whatever he said. But he did not.... that's integrity!! They have a complete disregard of the neighborhood. They have a alarm system the goes off at the middle of the night 11:00 PM 3:00AM and to be honest I don't think there alarm system works. Not sure if illegal activity is going on there but that faulty alarm definitely can be the cause. I considered using there storage area but no thank you. Had a fuel delivery issue and took my boat in to Vee Jay Marine. The problem was quickly identified and the guys took care of it promptly. Had to leave the boat at the shop until I could pick it up (I was in the beginning of my work week). They kept the boat indoors the whole time and it was well protected from the environment and the hull work (sanding/spraying). Picked up my boat in great condition and clean. This is by far the best boat repair facility in the bay area. I took in a 2006 Bayliner 175 for a diagnostic. Frank was incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and most importantly honest. Since Frank sold the place, the new owners have little experience. They couldn't even give me a estimate with parts and instead suggested I bring my own parts for them to install. I confirmed on a Friday that I would bring my boat down Saturday I was told I would have a spot at the dock and would be hauled out. The day I cruised it over they had no spot for me on the dock and no place for me at the shop nor did I get hauled out and they wantEd me to leave my boat at a dock they did not own and have to wait three to four days till they hauled it out. Have used Vee Jay Marine for 25+ years and have always been treated well. The service has always been professional and done within a reasonable time table. Went out of their way to have my boat in the water for the Forth of July after being indoors for six months on a refit and caulking of the hull. Vee Jay did the installation of my stern thrusters last Dec. Did a professional job at a reasonable price. Did bottom paint and I have recommended them to others in the harbor. Last Friday they (Frank and Vince) saved the day for a group of young adults we were taking to San Francisco by clearing some codes on our starboard engine that was keep the boat from going into forward or reverse. A couple of weeks ago I called up VJ Marine about a stuck bolt on a my starter. Frank said, "Bring it in and I can look at it." When I arrived after my 15 mile journey, I asked for Frank. He was the gentleman behind the counter. I explained my problem and in no time he said, "Let's take a look." Keep in mind he only works the counter. Veejay's help me figure out the many issues and to have them fixed correctly. They also worked with me to save money by getting rebuilt parts from other vendors. I am new to Boating and before buying my first boat, I did extensive research in where to moor it and who would be taking care of it. Needless to say, finding someone to maintain the boat would mean finding a shop you can depend on, trust, and maintain a long term relationship with. As a small business owner myself and a very discriminating (hard to please) consumer, I expect excellent service, fair prices (or great deals), ease of access to management, a voice that is heard, and above all work I can depend on and trust. Buying a used boat out in Discovery Bay, I decided that Pittsburg Marina would be my initial home and word out there was Vee Jay's was the place to maintain it. I had the boat delivered there and surveyed and repaired. The place looked huge, next to the marina, well maintained, clean, and blending well in the local surrounding ( I was expecting industrial, old auto shop, parts everywhere kind of place). Met up with Andrea who manages the office and she was smiley and friendly and directed me to Frank and his son who were checking the boat out. Both were approachable and willing to explain all the details of the boat and boating to a novice like me. With cars, boats, electronics, and everything else that needs repair and maintenance, I like to dabble and do some of my own repairs while I leave the big or dirty jobs to the professional. It is hard to trust an auto repair or in this case marine repair because of the fear (due to lack of technical knowledge) that you will be taken for a ride. But I do my research, and at times pretend I don't know something to see if I am being taken advantage of, and Vee Jay's has easily passed my test. Friendly, family-oriented and easy to talk to, no up-selling, and explanations that are easy to understand. It is 5 months later and with a huge boating learning curve the boat went back for bottom paint, gel coat repair, windlass replacement, and a few of my paranoid requests for perceived problems and leaks. Vee Jay's picked up the boat straight from the Marina, worked with my boat insurance adjuster, and all things went smoothly as I have hoped.
