Monjunu's has always been a favorite. The food is always fresh and delicious. I usually get the chicken Alfredo, but today I was adventurous and I got the chicken aurora - grilled chicken, Alfredo and red sauce, cheese- baked twice. Amazing dish. There is also a shrimp version that I will try next time. The portion was very large. I ate about 1/4 and took the rest home. My husband had the 1/4 mufeletta and an Italian salad. Like me, he. Tends to order the same consistently good food. I love the kitschy vibe in the restaurant with the grape vine decor. It gives Monjuni's a unique ambiance among the restaurants in Shreveport. One of the best parts of my visit was our server Jacqueline. So personable with a great smile, efficient. Keep this young woman. She is an asset to the business. I want lots of people to enjoy this restaurant, but selfishly I want it to stay just the same. read more

Saturday May ninth . 4:45 pm party of 3. There was no wait and we were seated just inside the dining room. Aesthetically speaking- the dining room is busy to the eye. They got a lot going on in there. I ordered the fried calamari and lasagna. They didn't have the wine I ordered so I took the waitress suggestion. Lambrusco. I sweet chilled red. I was disappointed in the serving size. The calamari arrived at 4:55. Cooked to perfection. So tender with a crispy batter. I didn't like the sauce. It was very sweet. The lasagna was served 5 minutes later. It was absolutely swimming in the same sweet sauce. I genuinely could not enjoy it. I took a couple bites and boxed the rest up. Scraping as much of the sauce as possible. Jason ordered the chicken parm. Served with 2 large chicken breast- it's definitely enough for 2 people. I was also disappointed in the fact that the meal didn't include a side salad. Complimentary bread was included. I've lived here for 32 years and this was my first time eating here. The place was relatively lively, its aesthetic is unique and can feel overwhelming in a good way. I ordered the Italian Fried Potatoes which were essentially Potato Wedges. They were decent enough for an appetizer. For the main course I got the Fettuccine Chicken Alfredo, it was solid. We were given free complimentary garlic bread which was honestly stale, the marinara sauce that came with it was decent. We stopped in to celebrate some great news, and Monjuni's made it extra special. Having only been to the Baton Rouge location before, we weren't sure what to expect here--but it was perfect. She #1 had the classic spaghetti with sweet meat sauce, She #2 ordered the shrimp fettuccini Alfredo, and I went all in on the twice-baked lasagne with a house salad. Every dish was fantastic--full of flavor, perfectly cooked, and "comfort-food" in all the right ways. The crispy-crunchy Italian bread slices with the dipping sauce were a hit from the start, especially under the cozy glow of grape bunches hanging from the ceiling and the rustic Italian décor all around. It felt like stepping into a little trattoria. She #1 enjoyed a chilled Moscato, and I had a deep, rich Cabernet that paired beautifully with both our meals. We wrapped things up by sharing a slice of Italian cream cake--light, creamy, and just indulgent enough. The only (minor) letdown? No coffee available. But honestly, that didn't put a dent in the experience. I had a great experience here. I stopped in for a quick lunch on a Saturday. Shreveport was under a boil notice, so my Diet Coke came in a bottle, no ice. The iced tea was unavailable too. No fault of theirs, likely due to the bad weather the week before. Crispy bread and marinara sauce arrived. It was sweet but lukewarm, which seemed odd. Still tasty, though. I ordered lasagna and it was delicious. Yes, their sauce is sweet. I love sweet sauce, so it was a hit for me. I wish I could have enjoyed more or taken it to go. I genuinely wish I could give 0 stars. My mom ordered $336 worth of food for Easter only to get home and have the entire order missing noodles. They sent us home with giant pans of sauce with no noodles. Ever since they got a new owner they have gone down hill with their food and service. I wish I had photos but I sent the food back so fast I never got a photo. They only offer 2 choices of pasta-fettuccine or spaghetti. The marinara sauce is extremely sweet and tastes like it's from a jar and they added sugar. I asked for the Alfredo-marinara mix to go on top of the eggplant Parmesan only to find out both sauces are sweetened and dumped on top of a lumpy pile of fettuccine noodles. The eggplant parm tasted like it had been cooked a while ago(days) and re-heated. Not fresh food. The decor is very dated and "low end". They actually have green garland strung with old school Christmas lights hung from the ceiling. I know this is a Shreveport favorite but unfortunately for us it did not check any of our boxes. We wanted to love it as my husband's favorite food is Italian. Worst part was that when I received my entree I took one bite of the eggplant and one bite of pasta and left it alone. The server asked how we were enjoying everything so I was honest and told her I didn't like any of it and why. She removed the plate and returned it to the kitchen. We never saw the manager once. They never came to communicate with us. Lastly, we asked for our check only to find that the eggplant parm was not removed from the total! The Lunch Lasagna was horrible. It was over cooked to the point where the whole thing was rubbery. The Mozzarella was brownish black. I was in a rush to make a doctor's appointment or I would have sent back. Also it was covered up with sauce to the point where all you saw was a huge lump on the plate. Never really saw the Lasagna until you cut into it. Never ever have I seen Lasagna served like this before. I like a slight sweetness to my marinara sauce but this was over the top. I ate about 3 bites and had to quit. Mostly tasted like a boxed Lasagna that they poured very sweet sauce over. Service was polite and attentive, however I ordered the Lunch Lasagna and they charged me incorrectly. When I let them know, the server did correct it and apologized. I don't really care for the decor other than the old signs, but I had been there before so I knew about the lights and grape garland and it doesn't really bother me much. Monjunis is a Shreveport classic. If you want something light and delicious at a steal of a price, you can order their Italian side salad. Side salad?? Yes. Side salad. It's a generous portion and more than enough to fill you up. I love the olive mix on top. This is what I typically order. Note: the other location does not let you only order a side salad. Today, I decided I wanted pasta and got their spaghetti with 1 meatball. Depending on your preference, you may love or hate their signature sweet marinara sauce. I personally really enjoy it. And I looove that they drench the pasta in sauce. I love my pasta saucy haha! The tender, savory meatball goes well with the sweetness. And this portion is HUGE. I will eat my leftovers for dinner tonight and for lunch tomorrow. If you don't like sweet sauces, don't fear! They have a classic basil sauce you can choose that is equally as good. My mom got the toasted ravioli today. It's technically a starter, but she got it as her entree. There is an option to choose between 6 or 12. 6 would have been the perfect amount. The ravioli were served with a small bowl of sauce for dipping. We would not order this dish again, but it was decent. It was basically fried squares of cheese without much seasoning. They are also famous for their mint tea. I prefer tea elsewhere in the area (won't mention names here), but Monjunis's tea might be worth trying if you like your tea extra minty! It is true that their prices are a bit high, and that's the main reason we don't frequent this place too often. (The prices are one reason why I like to order a side salad to eat as my meal). It would be fantastic if they would make their portions a little smaller to reduce prices. Like I said, their entrees are overly generous, and you are sent home with bountiful leftovers. I've been eating at Monjunis for at least 20 years. Their food and service are the reasons I return!

My husband grew up really liking this place, so I had high hopes. I wasn't expecting authentic Italian food, but I also wasn't expecting my lasagna to be doused in SWEET marinara sauce. I could only eat about 1/3 before the sweetness overwhelmed me. Despite all the sugar, it was surprisingly bland otherwise and had very little meat and mozzarella and no ricotta whatsoever. If you're going to attempt something outside of the box at least put a description on the menu. read more

Man, I had high hopes for this place. I went in totally optimistic. The atmosphere was great, grapes and Christmas lights hanging from the ceiling, sparkly booths, and packed quarters. It smelled wonderful. The plates we saw coming out looked great too. Note on the pasta: It is dried shelf stable, not freshly made. If that matters to you, please make note. It does to us, especially at these prices. The kids menu: we ordered kids spaghetti with a meatball, and fettuccini Alfredo. Theses plates are expensive! Almost $10 for a plate of noodles with Alfredo sauce? No meat. The servings were average, and the kids enjoyed their food. Really about $0.50 worth of noodles, maybe if that. One meatball and some sauce. Their meals were supposed to have drinks included, but we were charged for them. Very much overpriced and under delivered. I took a bite of my daughter's Alfredo and it was not good. It may be a canned or jarred sauce, if not, they just stink at the flavor profile. Our food: They bring you toast with their sauce before the meal. The sauce is delicious, but the toast is hard. Like, crouton hard. I would have preferred some softer toast or fresh bread, but whatever. It kept me from filling up because I wasn't interested in eating more than a couple of bites. My husband had the shrimp aurora. He said the shrimp were greatly overcooked and rubbery. He said the sauce was alright, but really his dish was mostly pasta. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan. My chicken was super dry, but the dish had okay flavor. I wouldn't recommend it, that is for certain. I had asked for a salad before my meal and it never came, I had to request it be removed off of the check. Also, I had a sever allergic reaction to my dish. I am only that severely allergic to shellfish and iodine, of which neither should have been in that sauce. I am still perplexed, and don't fault the restaurant for this at all unless they have shellfish derivative or iodine in their sauce, or there was cross-contamination somehow. I only mention it because if you have a shellfish or iodine allergy, you may want to be cautious. Our server was new, but very kind. She did the best she could, but she fell short on knowledge of the menu and kitchen. The salads and sandwiches looked good. I may order a salad one day and grab it at the drive-through. I definitely wouldn't take my family back for the kids to eat $20 worth of sub-par noodles. I also wouldn't order any of their pasta. No thanks. The older man who waited on us said I will bring you water when you order and leaned his elbow on the bact of the booth seat and crossed one foot over the other to wait. Terrible food. All of it and not worth the month. Will say no more as I believe I have said it all. None of our food was good and we left halt of all on the table. That bad. Am amazed that the place is still in business. Called Monjunis on Louisiana and told them about our two visits and they said they were NOT connected and had no control over the place in Portico. Italian food is Italian food pretty much wherever you go. But in the South, every restaurant has a different spin on the basic dishes. Would you think of ordering a po-boy at an Italian restaurant? Probably not, but in the South you do. Or, you could try the cajun shrimp tomato cheese toast slices. I'd never heard of meatball nachos, but they got those here too. I heard someone order them at a nearby table, but never did end up seeing what they were. My uncle and I joked that "That's what must be considered fusion cuisine." But all joking aside, this place is a decent restaurant for good food. However, the best time to get a good deal is lunch because you are getting a whole meal for under $10. Otherwise, you're spending more money than you'd probably want to for dinner because everything here is a la carte. If you order pasta, you have to order the salad separately. If you order a muffaletta, you have to order the fries separately. Same goes with the po-boy. We were a pretty large group of people. I think there were at least 15 of us there that night. We all shared the food and got to taste different dishes. I ordered the twice baked ziti. It was good, but not very cheesy. I was a bit disappointed in that. I had a bite of the sausage pizza. Now that's where the cheese was at. It literally was stringing from my mouth to the piece of pizza I was eating. The sausage was sliced. It wasn't ground at all. So this made for a non-greasy piece of pizza. I was very pleasantly surprised. The muffaletta was tasty. I wasn't expecting to bite into sweet tasting bread. Usually muffalettas are prepared with a sourdough or italian loaf. This had a crust on it and a sweet taste. It was unlike anything I'd ever had. It was good, but different. What made me choose to give them 4 stars was the bread pudding alone. This has to be one of the best bread puddings I have ever had in my entire life. It was a perfect gooeyness and sweetness with the white whiskey sauce drizzled on top. I attempted to get the recipe from my cousin who used to work here. She just gave me a look that pretty much said "No way." She told me that Miss Irma wouldn't allow that. Now if that's not loyalty to a previous place of work I don't know what is. The waitress did an excellent job in making sure we were taken care of. She was able to keep track of what we ordered with no trouble at all. I would probably come here again if visiting, but I would most likely come for lunch. That seems to be the better time deal-wise. Several of the menu options are available with a side during the lunch service. Just be prepared to spend a little more on your food here than at other Italian restaurants. read more

If you like frozen commercial delivery food dressed up in a very sweet marinara sauce that is overpriced then this place is for you. For me, an evening with a Stouffer lasagna, 3 abita beers and some romaine lettuce with 3 ounces of bad mozzarella cheese on it - at home for less than $15 - tastes better and beats the $40+ paid here. Fun quirky place with nice staff. Cheesy bread appetizer was the best thing we ate. Very cheesy and good. Chicken parmigiana looks and tastes like it was pulled from a TV dinner. Chicken is in Pattie's not actual chicken. Kids spaghetti was runny and my daughter said it tastes like tomato soup. Youngest got a chicken and fries and couldn't eat it because the chicken was spongy but she went to town on the potato wedges. Wife said baked ravioli is not bad but not good either. There are things in life, that just, for the lack of a better word...suck. One of those things, is when you have a craving, a super-strong, take-over-your-life craving, and when, once-and-for-all, that monster of a craving is finally addressed, you are cruelly paid back in equal measure with monumental disappointment. And such was the case, my last visit to this location. And, I say last, as in most recent, but I also say last, as the word is meant to be used in most instances, with a sense of finality. I will never return to this Monjuni's. I'm done. I'm finished. There's no turning around. There's no turning back. A lifetime customer will no longer be a customer for whatever remains of this here life, and time. I put my foot down. I draw this line in the sand. The last nail has been driven into the coffin. That poor camel? Its' back, according to the vet (and I called) is indeed broken, and had to be put down. And the root cause of this sad euthanasia? Two separate visits, over two different months, to where I paid top freakin' dollar, for two different entrees ($20+with tax, and tip, each trip) and part of the allure of the entree in each situation was to have it, "twice baked" in the oven. I even dined in on both occasions, as opposed to ordering the dishes as takeout, because I wanted the full effect, and the food to be as hot as possible. I just didn't think the "twice baked" effect would be as good, served in typical takeout styrofoam. Blech. No. Not what I wanted. Let's do this right. So, I did my part. I dined in. Both times. Set the mood. Take in the ambience. And let me also note here, these two most recent epic failures occurred at different dining times. The first episode occurred at dinner time in the evening in July. This most recent visit was on a Sunday morning (11am) just after opening. The offending entrees: The Little Sicily, and the "Twice Baked" Lasagna. Though not advertised in its' title, The Little Sicily, is also supposed to be "twice baked", as it's in its' menu description, and part of its' appeal, and a certain selling point. It's also one of the more expensive menu items offered here. Maybe the most expensive. And okay, I get it. I'm sure a good lot of y'all are like, twenty bucks? What's the big deal? That's nothing! Well, the deal is, I've paid it, actually over it, twice now, on two successive visits, and I feel like I was ripped off completely. I don't often eat out, certainly not at what I consider sit-down restaurants, so when I do, I certainly don't expect perfection, I've worked in food AND beverage in my life, so I know, but I do at least hope for, my money's worth. And what I got here (twice!) was so not my money's worth. I left here feeling gypped from either false advertising, a faulty oven, or the lightning-fast reflexes of an over-eager kitchen staffer quick-to-the-draw when it came to removing just my particular meal from the fire. Oh, lucky me. I may be wrong, but twice baked to me, should be a nice golden color, maybe a little brown on the edges, an enjoyable slight crunch to that top layer of cheese and pasta. Steam rising from the meal, as you dig into it. View my pics from 7/25/17 and 9/17/17. Do these meals look "twice baked" to you? The grated cheese is barely blended and still quite discernible. There's no browning, or golden of nothing. It looks barely baked even once, in both instances, am I right?? And no steam!! None!! For either dish!! Both were barely warm!! So, how is this "twice baked"?? And what makes me the most dissatisfied is the cost of each venture, especially with the "twice baked" lasagna, because you actually have to pay two dollars extra over their regular priced expensive lasagna to have it prepared that way. I am a silent sufferer when it comes to restaurants. I will not send it back. I know. I worked in food and beverage, remember? I just accept what was served to me, as is, and hopefully learn a valuable lesson on the spot. I ended up taking the remnants of my last order home, and re-baking it myself, in my own oven. How sad is that? I didn't learn that lesson the visit prior to the last, because I was a lifetime customer, and there was that body of work before it. But two times in a row! A long-established Italian restaurant can't get twice baked right on two different occasions, two different dishes, two different dining times, all the while charging a premium for these products? I'm done! I'm out! I guess the joke is, I'm the one who ended up getting "twice baked" in all of this! Thank you, Monjuni's, we had some good times, didn't we? The atmosphere, fresh food, authentic taste, and incredible customer service is something they have upheld for all of these years. Out of all the visits we have had at the Youree location, tonight was the best experience we've had as far as customer service. Family took me there over the Christmas holidays. Loved it! Informal. Fun decor. Friendly service. And an excellent meal. I had a ravioli made with an excellent tomato sauce with what I guessed were cajun spices and just a splash of cream with shrimp added in. In Miami, the pretentious folks would call it "fusion" cooking. Italian + Cajun. Cajalian? I just call it good eating. Friends had a polpetta gigante (giant meatball) which was also excellent. Reasonable prices, though the 10% (!!) sales tax is a little much -- what's with that? Most of Florida is only in the upper 6%s maybe 7%. But a large portion so there's that.
