Okay, so let me start off by saying that Miss Monique is absolutely wonderful! I cannot say enough about how pleased I am with her and her work! The overall experience was wonderful. When you arrive, you are immediately greeted by a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Her place is very quaint and tidy!!! She is extremely professional and makes you feel comfortable. Now, on to the actual hair braiding. OMGEEEEEE, Miss Monique has a "feather touch" to the point that I possibly could've fallen asleep (if I wasn't running my mouth so much). Her parts are neat and straight and symmetrical. She is also very quick with her fingers; (It took approximately 5/5.5 hours from start to finish). I have a small head but a lot of thick hair...Oh and did I mention that I am an extremely tender-headed grown woman!?!... Regardless, of this, I barely felt Miss Monique braiding my hair. I have gotten my hair braided by Monique three times, and she has done an excellent job each time. She braids out of her home; which I was initially wary about, but her home is clean and quiet. Her prices are very affordable, and she is a quick braider. But I won't be utilizing her services anymore. As it turns out, we have some value differences. While I appreciate and respect everyone's religious and spiritual beliefs, I was put off by the discussion. I admit to engaging in the topic; but I became concerned when the conversation turned to gay people. I obviously didn't agree with her character assessment of certain groups of people. After much debate, I was told that I am a "bad person" because I have had pre-marital sex and have lied on occasion. Now - besides the fact that it's probably not good business etiquette to say things like that to a paying customer, it's also just an ugly thing to say to someone in general. If I wanted to be told that I'm a sinner, I would go to church. I don't walk into a place of business to talk about God. I'm not going to hand over my hard-earned money to be told that God thinks I'm a bad person. I recently returned to Monique's chair in December for a second time after first getting my hair done by her in the summer while I was on a break from wearing my natural curls. Again, I can honestly say that as long as she's doing hair, I will be coming to her, exclusively. When I first reached out to her when I was looking for a new hairstylist, she answered my text right away, sent pictures and rates, and worked with me until I was comfortable and assured with the service she'd be providing. I really appreciated her honesty when it came to explaining to me what kind of hairstyles were possible for the amount of hair that I wanted use, as she informed me that with what I was originally asking for, only 4 packs of hair would not be enough so I had to change course. There were no mysterious as far as what my style would be, the price, her location,the time, etc-she just set things up so it would go as smoothly as possible and it did!! The first style that she gave me were simple, medium individual braids which were exactly what I needed and wanted. Not only were they reasonable priced, and I say that truly, having been to many braiders who charge below salon prices but are still kind of pushing it with their rates. I am a grad student on a strict budget so when she told me how much she charged, I was beyond happy! I also want to mention her professionalism and efficiency. I felt super comfortable in her chair. Her braiding process is completely painless, she treated my hair so delicately, the braids were not too tight, uniform, neat looking, and my edges were very pleased when all was said and done. The style lasted too. As a natural, i'm very weary of how some braiders manipulate my hair but Monique appreciated my individual tresses. She also completed the style in less than two and a half hours. I was shocked at first when she said she was done because I had literally just sat down! She will have you in and out looking great, with no time wasted, I guarantee that! When I went back in December, I asked her to give me "Zoe Kravitz braids" so I would have a cute style while not having to fuss over my hair during my trip to Asia, and oh, when she showed me my look in the mirror when she finished i was in love. I think it took maybe four hours, and It looked sooooooo good. I just got back and I love the way it looks to this day. She matched what I wanted perfectly, and I smiled all the way home. It ended up being the perfect style to brave the harsh Korean winter for the majority of my trip. The first thing that happened when I got off the plane in Japan was a man coming up to me just to tell me that he loved my hair. I got compliments on my braids from both men and women in China, Korea, and Japan, telling me that my hair was beautiful, asking where I got it done, and even did a photoshoot where the stylist was gushing over my hair so much that she didn't even want to change it for the shoot, although it was traditionally Korean themed haha! I could go on and on about how much I love the service Monique provides... She is fast, on time, professional,a great communicator-which is a must if you really want to be happy with your style, really nice to be around (she tells great stories, and is a genuine, kind, and truly interesting woman, always offers drinks and even fed me!!), overall just phenomenal. So I'm sure Monique saw this coming. She started off as a nice lady but soon became very rude and unprofessional. I first contacted her on the 16th to inquiry about braid size, length and pricing. After sending her pictures of what I wanted she responded with pictures of previous clients with various braid sizes and prices. The size I was looking for and the size she displayed seemed to not coincide. So like with any client to stylist our conversation continued. We settled on a date and time. Now let me be clear. That date and time was today. The size and length of my braids have not changed. I just inquired about how big the braided sections would be by sending her a picture of her previous client and asking what size braid does that translate to for her. She became very rude and demeaning over the phone. She explained how she had been previously cancelled on this morning by her 5am client. And frankly, I feel she took her frustration with that client out on me. She went into why she doesn't take new clients because they flake and how it "sounds like you're uncertain if you want your hair braided". I attempted to explain to her that that wasn't the case at all being that I had been trying to find a braider for several weeks. She wouldn't budge. She abruptly cancelled my appointment even after I tried to reason with her to keep it. She called me difficult for having questions about braid size then boasted about how she's been braiding for 35 years. With that sort of demeanor it may be time to retire. Now I am scrambling to replace her. Her inconsideration of any client new or old is disgraceful. If I could give zero stars I would. read more
