Great food. Great service. Eat there every chance I get. It's a family tradition. Why do they require 85 characters?

First things first, we got to pick our own seats. And baby, I love a little freedom. The tables?…read moreShockingly spacious. I know that's a weird flex for a restaurant, but listen, usually I'm playing Tetris with plates and elbows, so having actual room to breathe? I appreciated that. Now I started with the Wisconsin cheddar soup, and let me tell you, it came out HOT. I mean fresh off the stove, don't play with it hot. Flavor was there, but I'm not the biggest bacon fan, so I couldn't quite finish it. And that's okay, because the main event was waiting. The chicken stir fry? Oh, now THAT'S where things got serious. Best thing on the table, hands down. I even added my wife's eggs from her meal, yes, I mixed cuisines, yes I took risks, and baby, I was gone. I scarfed that plate down faster than a horse at the Kentucky Derby. No shame, no regrets. And let's not forget our server, such a sweetie. Always nearby, refilling waters, checking in, chatting just enough to make you feel taken care of without hovering. Exactly how it should be done. All in all? Great food, great space, great service. I'll definitely be back...probably for that stir fry alone.

I've had the pleasure of dining in at Horsch Radish as well as getting food catered, and I would…read moresay both have been very good experiences. For a German restaurant in rural Illinois, the food has been fresh and authentic and is a nice change in scenery from the local cuisine. The hours are a bit odd, so you definitely have to be intentional when you want to visit. If you find yourself here at the right time, you'll have a decent meal for sure. If you're looking to try a little bit of everything, the Smorgasbord is your best option, that's what I ordered and shared with a colleague. The bratwursts were my favorite thing on the platter. There was definitely something going through the meat, some kind of sauce or cheese that added extra flavor to the sausage. The meat itself was rich and hearty for sure. The other sides were decent too, I really enjoyed the crispy potato pancakes and it was the first time I had tried spatzel. I'd say I'm a fan. The red cabbage was decent too, it was kind of just boiled cabbage. The Rahmschnitzel was definitely over-sauced. I'm sure the pan fried pork on its own was delicious, but by the time it hit the table, the sauce had turned the breading soggy and pork itself became a bit spongy as a result. Not only that, but the gravy wasn't the most warm and seemed a bit congealed. Everything else was satisfactory for sure. Dinner was decent, but the times I've had food catered has been awesome. Horsch Radish is well equipped to handle large events and can meet many different taste buds and food preferences. They had chicken, beef, fish, pasta, salads, everything on offer. All the food tasted great and all the guests loved it as well. Not only that, but the service provided was outstanding. In all honesty, I really liked the catering even more than the restaurant, and the catering wasn't necessarily German food! If you need a catering option, I'd look to Horsch Radish as an option for sure!

I've had occasion to make it over to this large bakery/cafe just north of downtown C-U for lunch a couple times and never been disappointed. Granted the food (including a couple fantastic side salad options) isn't cheap, but everything is made properly with high quality ingredients and well worth the occasional splurge. Although we have only tried some samples, there's even a fancy coffee cafe within.5 Factor in that all the employees we've met (including the delivery people out in the Central IL grocery stores) have been pleasantly passionate about their products, and you start to understand how they've come to stand out in what seems like a fading industry. That said, it also seems like the shelves with high end grocery items like exotic olive oils, Momofuku noodles, hard to find jams and other condiments, have dwindled in the last year or two, likely due to tariff-based cost models, but you are still likely to find a new favorite 'something' just browsing while they craft your sammy. Even if it's just a 'cronut' or a loaf of that amazing olive ciabatta or sourdough, it is becoming a mandatory C-U stop for us.

There are a few solid menu choices, and the service is generally friendly and efficient. In fact, I've actually been to both locations, once when it was in the downtown and now their new location a couple blocks away after a fire forced them to move. Despite the setbacks, Blue Star Cafe is still around, a testament to resilience and their positive standing within the community. The menu primarily consists of classic American fare, a lot of breakfast foods, sandwiches and hearty dinner plates. I find that the excel with their full dinner meals. I got their country fried steak dinner and that was excellent. The steak was was fried well, batter not too thick and had plenty of flavor. The sausage gravy paired with the steak nicely and complemented the mashed potatoes. The green beans were seasoned nicely, they had a ton of flavor! It all costed only $11 as well, you cannot beat that! Their sandwiches are basic and affordable. Both their pork tenderloin sandwich and their fish sandwich are plain (although the fish comes with tartar sauce). You can order fries with them, but they often come unseasoned. Both sandwiches follow the same affordable trend, with them being under $10 each. The servers here are always very welcoming and kind. The ambiance often feels lively, it's a popular spot for many locals. I'd say, Blue Star Cafe is the hot spot of Gibson City, and for good reason!

Meat sandos make me happy!…read more Glad we stopped by to try this spot! Literally everything was so delish! We were greeted upon entry and although I briefly looked at the menu online, there's so much other randomness that's available! Be sure to follow their socials for specials and limited menu items that aren't on the paper menus at the counter. We ordered the Baldarotta, Italian Beef, and Turkey Pesto-Hot. Also got an order of fries and the Sicilian Potato Salad. Then ran away with 2 pistachio cannolis! There are quite a few tables in the dining area. I really enjoyed that each table was different with a different set of chairs for each table. There are restrooms available...which was great because I definitely got messy! The namesake Baldarotta had a combination of the porketta and sausage and it made me smile from ear to ear! Such a comforting sandwich. The Italian Beef came with a a whole wide container of au jus for optimal dipping and was so flavorful! The Turkey pesto ordered hot (vs. cold) is a game changer! The pesto Mayo was DELISH! Fries were well seasoned. The potato salad had olives in it and I enjoyed that as well! The cannolis we took to go and enjoyed them later that evening! I loved how it wasn't too sweet at all! Parking was easy as there are spaces in the back. They are next to a brewery so could see pairing these tasty eats with a drink or two next door. Will definitely be back!
