I had decided to get a tattoo while I was on honeymoon in Hawaii. After researching several of the shops in Waikiki I came across Monarch and was impressed by their stellar reviews. We headed up there, told them what I was thinking of getting, and though I was prepared to make an appointment, Pate took me back right away. 45 minutes later I was walking out with a beautiful free-drawn humpback whale on my foot. The salon was clean, comfortable, and the staff was very friendly. Best of all the price was amazingly decent, much cheaper than what I was expecting for it being Hawaii. Laura is such a good artists, she was gentle and gave me good feedback to stear me in the right direction with my tattoo. This shop is extremely clean and its artists are laid-back and professional. I recently got my first tattoo here and everyone was extremely helpful. I made an appointment and put down $60 as a deposit. Deposits are cash-only, but you can pay for the tattoo with a card. This amount also counted toward the total of my tattoo. I got my tattoo on my ribs and honestly, I was pretty vocal (I swore, I cried and swore some more) about it, but Laura took it in stride and gave me breaks when I needed it. She also answered all my questions regarding after-care. The artwork they do is available on their website, and also in books in their shop. They are also willing to work with your ideas as well. Super crisp lines and an amazing hand drawn design, these people are true artists at this shop. The shop is very clean and professional. You will leave with a piece of art, not a cheap flash art rendering. I think that Rick has beautiful work and has a nice touch with the needle. Four of us went in for tattoos before we left to head home, and this was the BEST experience. The shop is clean and sanitary. They artists are just that. Each is college educated and several (if not all) have degrees in art of some sort. Two of us had Aaron and two of us had Mike. Both are professional, honest, and very talented. I have been going to Laura at Monarch Tattoo for several years now. She has done everything from full cover ups, touch ups to existing tattoos, and original pieces for me. No matter what she's doing for me that day, her work never ceases to amaze me and I always leave the shop happier than I could have imagined A lot of her artwork is Polynesian inspired, however, she can create anything. She is truly an artist! Although I've only been tattooed by Laura, I've become familiar with the other artists' work as well just from spending many hours there. Laura takes her time and does things right so that you end up with a great tattoo. I debated whether I should spend the last day of my vacation there getting such a big piece done - but am so glad I did! This is a clean shop where you get treated right. I came in on a Monday and they squeezed me in on Saturday (I was flying out Sunday). When I come back in a couple of years I am going right back here to get some more work done! Laura did my first tattoo last year when we were there on vacation. This year we went back and I got another tattoo done from her. Where ever you stay in Oahu, going to her shop is so worth the drive. It is scenic and the most beautiful drive out there. Her new shop is awesome. I am the most pickiest person when it comes to being clean. Her shop is my favorite color yellow but what impressed me was how clean and sterile it is. I am so happy for her. AMAZING WORK!!!! So my husband and I went to Hawaii on our honeymoon & stayed right across the street. We went in here with the original thought of getting matching tattoos. Needless to say we ended up getting more than just tht & got to know them....AMAZINGLY nice people. As far as their work goes, you will NOT be disappointed! We both ended up getting more than what we originally set out for because we loved them so much. He got a very detailed Polynesian tattoo from elbow the wrist that wrapped around his arm along with "Nau ko'u aloha" written in it & he loooooooves it! I got "Nau ko'u aloha" on my collar bone and snowflakes on my ankle (an in memory tattoo for my Dad) and I sprung the snowflake tat on Laura last minute and she was cool and went with it. Not to mention that his Polynesian & my snowflake tattoos were freehanded...I'll upload pics soon, they truly are wonderful artist that are great at what they do! What an awesome experience my wife and I had here! It was the first tattoo for my wife and me, but Laura walked us through the process individually for each tattoo. We each got honu designs. She drew up an awesome image on the first try for my wife, and it's what she selected with little modification! Mine was a bit bigger and I was more unsure what to get. I found one in one of her books, and said "I want that.". She politely informed me that no two of her designs are ever the same, and drew me up one that was custom to me, but incorporated some design elements I liked from other works. Again, first try and nailed it! Both tattoos came out crisp and exactly as designed. The place was impeccably clean. Everyone there looked professional and were genuinely helpful. This is in stark contrast to another parlor I went into in Waipahu (I'm a clean cut hauoli and one of the staff started singing the theme to Cops, as if I was an undercover agent!). I knew I was in good hands when I walked into Monarch and saw Laura's Masters of Arts degree from UH hanging on the wall (says alot about her artistic ability and sensibilities). I have found my tattoo artist and don't need to look any further!! Laura has done 2 of my tattoos and I am so in love with both of them that I will keep going back for any future ones. The staff has always been extremely friendly when I have gone in and have accommodated my time and my design ideas. I found Laura on Instagram and knew right away that her style was exactly what I wanted and that she could draw something that would be uniquely mine. I basically went to her with a few ideas and let her have creative freedom to incorporate all of them in the way i described. She immediately knew what I was talking about, sketched a few things and I booked an appointment with her. When I came back for the appointment, she drew the design on me so I could see if I liked it...we made a few changes and she got to work. I really cannot recommend her enough. The designs turned out beautifully and I am frequently being stopped and asked who did my work. I have sent 3 friends to her so far and have a few more that are interested.
