I bought two milkweed plants from Monarca because I had a Monarch caterpillar baby boom -- 22 of them at one time and they had stripped the milkweeds I had. But there must've been some pesticide overspray on the plants from Monarca because my caterpillars all died. I watched some of them twitching violently before they died. I visited this nursery once before and was impressed by the large number of milkweed plants in stock. The owner even showed me a green Monarch chrysalis that was attached ito a piece of drip tubing. I didn't even think about the pesticide aspect until my caterpillars died. If you don't care whether or not they use pesticides then sho here but if you're trying to raise Monarch caterpillars, then you should go contact the people at This Is a Monarchy, which is up in Thousand Oaks. These people are very careful even about the fertilizer they use and use zero pesticides. You have to call them and make an appointment because it's a private residence. They're the ones who told me what probably happened to my poor caterpillars. I still feel bad about them! read more

The selection of plants is incredible -- I even found huge 5-gallon white roses that were priced so well I could buy five plants for what I paid for one at another nursery! Every plant is healthy, thriving, and clearly cared for with love. Luis is so helpful and genuinely passionate about what he does. Luis Is The Man!! I called ahead to find out if the had milkweed for monarch season, Luis informed me that they did. He was very knowledgeable about the plants there. I bought 17 ficus trees from this place. I later found out that I was charged $20 more per tree. I suspect that the person in charge did not like my landscape guy, but thats based on me overhearing a conversation. Another friend who bought from the same place (less trees than me), a week after I did, paid less than I did. It was still cheaper than Home Depot, but I felt a little cheated and I'm not sure why the price difference. I was not provided an explanation - maybe I just got them on a wrong day. The quality of the trees was okay. I ended up needing 4 more and found them cheaper at another local nursery in Sylmar. Three months later, the ones from the Sylmar nursery have grown 2 inches taller and 1.5 inches wider than the ones from this nursery. read more

I bought an avocado tree from Monarcas and was lied to about it. They told me it was Haas, it wasn't, they told me it would bear fruit this year, I found out later it won't bear fruit for at least 3 more years. They took advantage of someone who didn't know a lot about trees and they just wanted an easy sell. I'm disappointed. read more

Flew in to do an extended house-sitting for my sister's place. Armed with photos of the potted plant victims of her prior sitter's apparent black thumb, Luis happily took his time explaining how to care for each one that was still salvageable, and which to just start over. He was more than patient with me, walking through the garden and pointing out the plants that would work best for her patio conditions. Prices were reasonable enough to allow me to purchase enough for creating an entire patio makeover for about the same price as my grocery run. Couldn't have dreamt of doing that where I live! I have a passion for plants. I'm mostly into indoor plants (allergies) but I'm working on my outdoor space too. This nursery did not disappoint. I found plants for both. In fact, when I arrived it was super hot and I was dressed in professional attire. Meaning my heals were sinking a bit in the dirt and I was perspiring (okay sweating) a lot. And yet, I was sad to leave. I loved taking in all the plants that were clearly well looked after and the owner was incredibly helpful. The owner was more than that, he was passionate about plants. This would seem like something one might expect but I shop for plants all the time and I rarely see people who work at nurseries positively engaging with customers for more than a minute or two. The owner pulled out plants we worked out would work best for me. He helped me find the best versions, loaded them up and gave me the lowest prices I've ever paid. I had messed up my previous planting of an agave in an old stump, and he walked me through what probably went wrong, helped me pick out what to get, and even suggested other nurseries in case I wanted even more selection. Perhaps I'm at the wrong nursery I thought, but no, this is the same nursery with all of the 5-star reviews. I just don't understand why people like this place. I didn't see anyone working here at all and I roamed the entire property. None of the avocado trees that I was interested in were labeled with their respective variety and approximately 20% of the trees were toppled over. Everything was so disorganized that it was challenging just to navigate through the aisles of disheveled plants and trees completely fallen over and blocking you inside this labyrinth of sad plants. This place is not a nursery, it's a junkyard of plants and trees with no one to help guide you towards your purchase. Look elsewhere. read more

Luis is so terrific he sold us a lemon tree for less than half the price of wood all the other nurseries wanted and it is such a wonderful tree we get big giant lemons and then my neighbor decided to put Solar on his two-story house which causes a glare into our family room that is blinding!! I called Luis this morning I told him of my problem I sent him photographs I told him I need a big big tree to block it in the back of our property he's so wonderful he came over tonight to make sure he could get the tree into the property and he's going to bring it on Saturday and we are so grateful to him for helping us to block this misery out. I just left Monarcas Nursery and I was looking for some soil for my spider plants and possibly a small one to fill in the leaves that were dead. Luis asked me what I needed and ended up telling me that he had some soil he could fill my plants in with. He said just to bring them by, I ran home, brought my plants back and he filled them in with some soil for free, removed the dead leaves and told me what to do to take care of them better. This is hands down one of the best nurseries in the entire valley! Such a large selection of outdoor plants and indoor plants as well. A lot of nurseries only sell outdoor plants that are very small, but this nursery also sells plants that are more fully matured for people who are impatient (like me!). The owner, Luis, was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable so even if you aren't 100% sure what you want, you can absolutely trust him to help you. He also offers services if you need help planting or landscaping at your property. We ended up getting 12 large vine plants to fill in an area in our backyard and we will definitely be back for more! I stopped by this afternoon to look around and was approached by the owner Luis, he was really friendly and offered to help me out. I mostly wanted to look around and he was not pushy at all, just said "take your time and let me know if you need anything." I ended up choosing a small plant and he was super knowledgeable and helpful with tips. He was such a nice guy and even had some really cool monarch cocoons to show off.
