We called the day before Christmas Eve to see if they would be open. We were told they would be open till eight. Showed up at 7 PM and were told it was slow so they decided to close early. But, that doesn't change the fact that I have a family to feed. Lol. For a neighborhood restaurant that's not how you handle things. If you're gonna close, make it a set time so that we can adjust, but it comes to our holiday. It is a service industry. I have lived in the neighborhood behind it for 25 years. I ordered here from too good to go. I had chicken and rice and it was good. I ended up ordered a side of fried queso which was magnificent. I also ordered rice and beans and another chicken plate. I lived in the Heights for many years with the best Mexican food Houston has to offer. I moved into the area a year ago and I've had a hard time finding good Mexican food in the area. We went as a family the other night because we didn't want to cook or drive and I'm glad we tried Monarca. It will be our go to. The queso was kid and adult approved. We ordered the fajitas with shrimp and it was awesome. The shrimp were large and well cleaned and the fajita was real and tender fajita. The kids split a quesadilla that was also very good. The margarita was also yummy served in an ice cold goblet. Also go home with some churros, they are very very good. The restaurant had great service, full on a Thursday night and is also pretty inside with the monarch butterfly mural on one side of the restaurant. We will be repeat offenders moving forward. If i was being picky, I should have asked if they had a spicier salsa because I needed some spice but I didn't ask. I will next time. Would have gone well on my tacos . read more

I saw that I had an old review from well over 3 years ago that needed an update. The old review was 4 stars but it definitely needed to be updated to 5. We absolutely love this place! The menu is full of delicious choices and you won't be disappointed. I crave it so much that we usually are here at least a couple times a week. And the staff is now like family. We love them all! The service is excellent, they'll quickly accommodate your large group and this is my favorite Mexican restaurant by far!! Everything on the menu is so good it's hard to decide what to pick!! Because this is, YET ANOTHER, solid Tex-Max option nearby. --- --- --- I write it every time, but I don't understand how the local economics work that there are 4,000 restaurants exactly like Monarca in Houston. But it's close to the house and had good ratings, so I had to try it. I always go for the fajitas, and these were an enjoyable rendition. When my wife got home with the to-go order, I'll be honest: they did not *look* good. But the taste was much better than the visual. The rice and beans were excellent. The chips and queso were fine. And lastly, we ordered churros for dessert, which were a nice way to finish the meal. There are a couple other spots we liked more than Monarca, so we probably won't rush back, but they delivered an enjoyable cheat day meal. read more

If I could give this place more stars I would! What a great place! The food was amazing! The queso was on point! I also got a margarita flight, which was the best decision! There were like 10 different flavors to choose from, and the waiter was very knowledgeable on the ingredients and options. I was very impressed. I couldn't finish two of them because I personally though they were too sweet, nothing wrong with them at all. But they offered me a regular house one in place of the ones I didn't like, I didn't even ask. That's what I call amazing customer service! The building was BUSY! We were on a tight schedule and the service couldn't have been better or friendlier - fast or relaxed pace, they have you covered. Mixed grill fajitas for one were served sizzling, with lots of grilled onions - excellent. The chunky guacamole was delicious. It was hard to stop eating the chips and warm salsa! I did not think it was that great. Chicken fajitas were covered in paprika, the grilled onions/peppers were covered with the same. The chicken itself was good, it was tender, I'm just not used to that much seasoning. Beef fajitas were okay they did not receive the same paprika treatment. Guacamole was not fresh made, it came from a container. Also it could be just me, but the tortillas seemed like they came from a package and thrown on the grill, a little bit tough. Ordered the beef fajitas enchiladas and mixed chicken/ beef fajitas for 1 with refried and charro beans - no rice via DoorDash. Didnt get the refried beans and still got the rice, whatever, I guess I could have looked past that if the food was actually good...nothing but the chicken was decent, the beef fajitas had no flavor except for a char taste and it was so chewy I spit out my first bite and even tried a different piece to give benefit of the doubt but it was still just not good, the charro beans appeared to have flavor from cilantro and bacon yet tasted no salt, no spice and not even a freshness from the cilantro-it was just super bland as the rice that I didnt order also tasted just blah, the fajita beef enchiladas my husband had were the same, bland, not enough gravy just a major disappointment overall! The salsa had some heat, but again not much flavor and the onions were so chunky cut it was like they puréed the rest of the ingredients and then through them in making it a very strange consistency...like a hot sauce soup with chopped onions, not ideal. I was really hoping to like this place as it's close by but we will definitely not return, $38 for 2 entrees may have been an affordable price on DD (with tip) for great food howevever I felt it was a waste of money for such bland, not tasty and no flavor basic and commonly ordered dishes. read more

The Camarones Bravos; 6 jumbo shrimp with white cheese and a jalapeño strip wrapped in bacon served on a skillet with grilled onions, tomatoes, peppers & clarified butter for dipping YUM! The Carnitas are seasoned chunks of pork, fork tender with grilled onions & flour tortillas. Both dishes were accompanied with the traditional rice, beans, pica de gallo & guacamole. Their salsa and chips were also very good. The service prompt, friendly & efficient. They got a gold star from us. There are so many Tex-Mex restaurants to choose from up & down Hwy 105 but this one is well worth the extra miles read more

We have been here many times in the past 6 months because it is close by. We've always had terrific service! We've tried many things on the menu. The street tacos are delicious. Our favorite thing so far are the Crema fajitas. So good! We do think that charging for extra tortillas is a little bit much and not comparable to other Mexican restaurants. My sisters and I have been going to this restaurant for four years. My sister had an issue two years ago with the server, adding a tip on her credit card when she tipped in cash. Now they're doing it when my other sister pays with her card and tips in cash and they write in an additional tip to be charged to her credit card! We will not be back to this restaurant.
