If you are thinking about getting a tattoo in Austin, look no further! I've had an idea for a tattoo going on about 2 years but I held off on getting it until I moved to Austin from San Diego, CA a month ago. I did my research around Austin for tattoo places and Mom's Tattoos was one of the highest rated places I found. I decided it would be my first stop to see if they could help me out. I came in around 6:45pm on a Wednesday. I went up and was greeted by 2 artists. My artist, Aaron, was super friendly and eager to hear what idea I had/wanted. I told him the basic idea, an anchor with text saying "Who will fix me now", on my left forearm. He then sat down and within 30 minutes drew up a design on an iPad. This was honestly really impressive to me as I was expecting to come back another day to see the design he came up with but I watched him create it in real time. Since it was getting close to 8pm I decided to wait until Saturday to get it done officially. On Saturday I came in at our scheduled time and was ready to go. Aaron actually fixed up the initial design and it looked even better than before. Sat down and got the tattoo done in a little over an hour. Since this was my 6th tattoo, it was nothing super new to me but Aaron was chill and easy to talk to while the tattoo was getting done. What I found really cool is that as he was doing the tattoo, he realized there were some things he could do to make the tattoo even better and suggested them to me. I had a pretty open mind and I liked the design as it was so I told him to go for it. I trusted his style and taste. After the tattoo was over, he gave me some aftercare tips and a small bag of soap and healing balm to use. The price of the tattoo was really reasonable as well. All in all, I am glad I came to Mom's Tattoos and had Aaron as an artist. I didn't get to talk to any of the other artists there much but I could tell they were all really friendly and talented. I've spent many a sleepless night thinking about my negative experience of this place. I should have left when I was barely greeted when I walked in the door. "Mom" (Debbie) was there so I gave her a picture of a tattoo that I liked and without a word she took it into the back. My friend and I waited in the reception area, looking at pictures of tattoos that some of the other employees had done. I asked "Mom" if she had any pictures of hers and she said no. My friend and I waited and waited. We went outside and walked around. I had no idea how long this would take or even what was going on inside, if anything. I should have left then. I don't know how long it was, but I would guess that it was at least an hour, maybe longer. Still no idea what she was even doing. I assumed it had something to do with my tattoo. Finally she came out from the back with a stencil. It looked pretty good, although much bigger than the picture I had given her. She took it back into the back and reduced it slightly. Finally we got to the actual tattoo. She put the stencil on my wrist and for some reason it didn't come out well on the underside so she had to draw some of it by hand. Her hands shake a little, but it seemed to be OK. When I questioned that it looked a little big, she said that she would tattoo on the inside of the lines and it would look fine. I trusted her. Big mistake. Now, I have to talk myself into liking my new tattoo. It didn't come out like the picture. I'll probably go somewhere else to have them fix it. I'm not sure how, but I'm sure a real artist can come up with something. This is what I've learned from my experience: If you don't get a warm welcome and an explanation of what someone is doing or what to expect, go somewhere else. If you know someone who has tattoos that you like, find out who did them. It's not the place that counts but the actual person who does the tattoo. If you're not sure, don't do it. You can't count on experience. "Mom" has 40 years experience. Sometimes too much experience is not a plus. Be very picky when it comes to something that you're going to have to live with for the rest of your life. I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because the shop is clean and they seem to follow all the guidelines and sanitary regulations. It's also close to places to eat, which if I had known how long it was going to take for her to come up with a stencil I would have gone to. read more

I was greeted at the door, let her know what I wanted and was quickly matched with an artist, Brooke was friendly, quick and took the design I had and put her artistic spin to it and came up with a great color scheme that made the tattoo pop like I never imagined. Got two simple small black tattoos. Had to go back in two more additional times because the tattoos were not solid. They were lighter than the rest of the tattoo in several different places, on both tattoos. I had 13 tattoos before adding these two, and I have never had any issues or problems. I love the way that this little tattoo parlor is called "Mom's" because they totally made me feel at home. The tattoo shop is a colorful and eccentric little house on the side of the road that you really can't miss. The waiting room is a small cozy corner with a few seating options and artists' books on display while the ceiling/wall is scattered with tattoo stickers. There's also a funny sign about getting tattoos "while you have the skin" that made me chuckle. I was greeted by Aaron at the front who was very friendly and helpful throughout the entire process. I wanted a very specific small tattoo on my wrist and he provided feedback and several sketches to accommodate my vision because what I wanted was too small and would smudge into a blob over time. It was my first time getting a tattoo and Aaron was nice and patient enough to explain everything in details and answer all my silly first-timer questions to keep me informed. My tattoo only took maybe 5 minutes to complete because it was small, but the whole experience was pleasant, except for the pain of course. I was also provided soap and healing balm for tattoo care. Although I've never met the famous 'Mom', Aaron was Aamazing nonetheless. I did not see any of his other artwork, but based on my experience he seemed like a skillful and creative artist. Austin, TX is flooded with the tattoo scene so there's no shortage of tattoo parlors, but if you're looking for great service, friendly staff, and an awesome experience, this is your spot. We decided this is our shop for any and all tattoos. We came here together a little over 4 years ago and Debbie did my first tattoo, a small leafy cross on my back. She was awesome and made my first experience great! My boyfriend got a galactic butterfly and connected it with an older piece with music notes, we believe by Sarah. A great piece. Yesterday we walked in a little after 6 and everyone was so friendly and willing to help. A friend of the shop, Jared happened to be helping the shop for the week from Ohio. My family and I walked in on a Saturday morning. No appointment, no printed work, nada... Mom's was able to accommodate us with no problem. We already had in mind what we wanted. So they were able to print it out quickly. My husband went first, his was the plainest tattoo. Then, I went so that I wouldn't chicken out. He and I both got ours on our shoulders. We have professional jobs and did not want them as visible. My daughter went last. Hers turned out the best. I am not sure that the artist that my daughter and I went to has a lot of experience with ethnic skin...as far as coloring...etc. My husband is white and was tattooed by the female. His turned out o-kay. We weren't really impressed, but not disappointed either. We watched Jordan do a beautiful piece on the side of female. It was gorgeous. I did think it was expensive for what we got. My husband's piece is the plainest. She did add a little bit of artistic flair, but not much. I mean like just a little color on a feather. It was his first tattoo, so he didn't expect that much. My tattoo would have looked a little bit better with some color. The tattoo artist just wasn't keen to adding color due to my skin tone. I'm not that dark...as African Americans go...but I didn't feel like arguing with him, since I have tattoos all over my back, and they have color... My daughter is darker than me, even though she is bi-racial. She wasn't getting off of that chair without color, and her tattoo looks the best. We all healed up well. They give you supplies to take care of your tattoo. The shop is clean. The tattoo artist was very calming, soothing even. He didn't take a long time. He had a light touch. I liked him. Got there and we discussed the design more in person, he did a quick sketch and started to clean the area and get everything ready. When I went to lay down on the table he made sure I was comfortable and sure with my design. He has a very light hand and helped me experience less pain in a super sensitive area. I've gotten tattoos from some so-so places and some outstanding ones (like Oliver Peck's Elm St. shop in Dallas). Mom's Tattoos is one of the outstanding ones. The artists here are VERY detail-oriented, which is great considering you're getting art put on you for LIFE. When I went in to have some script done in honor of one of my children, Debi (Mom) seemed to have spent more time lining the art up and making sure it was just right than she did on the actual tattoo (since it was a simple one-color signature). Even when it seemed like it was right, she wanted it to be PERFECT and it was. The staff here is the friendliest I've encountered which is great for newbies who may be intimidated about going into a tattoo shop. They are also hella talented. I did a lot of research and looked through a lot of books before coming to Mom's. After stopping in at Southside and Resurrection (the two best rated parlors in Austin according to Yelp), I was blown away by the relative cleanliness and the quality customer service of Mom's. Mom is the sweetest lady and thoroughly cares about the customer making the best decision for themselves--not just about making a quick buck. Even though I ended up holding off on the tattoo I'd designed for my inside wrist, I didn't feel judged for not being able to decide on the right look. I've had a couple larger pieces done here by Deb, and by far they are my favorite personal tattoos and ones that garner the most compliments. One was flash that she altered a bit on the spot, the other was a custom piece. All in all, I was very pleased with both the price and the outcome -- the ink set in really well, and I didn't need to come back for touch-ups. A couple years later and the colors and details are still vibrant. I've sent a couple friends to have work done with Deb, and they've been pleased as well. I'll also say that of all the art I've had inked, Deb has had the softest hands, and it's always been a pleasure sitting for her. Two years after I came here for a tattoo, I was back for another. My grandfather passed away last month so I came here to get a sizeable memorial piece for him done on my back. In my mind, I knew what I wanted, but I wasn't exactly the world's best sketch artist. I solicited a girl from Etsy to draw my ideas out, but after several unsuccessful attempts, I paid her 1/2 for the work she had done and decided to make an appointment for Friday after work with the sketches she had done, and lots of print outs of what wanted. I met with Theo who was able to take my ideas and worked it with the girl's sketch to come up with one cohesive design. He made it work! We talked about the size, time and price before proceeding, but first I had to head home during rush hour to take care of my dogs before sitting down for the 3 hour process. When I returned, I was instantly greeted by Debi (she also greeted me the first time I came in that day). Some of the reviews of other tattoo places mention being ignored, but that is definitely not the case here! I would be intimidated by entering any tattoo shop alone, but I was immediately put at ease. When it came time for business, I was in a rather awkward position for the 3 hour process (I sat on a stool with my feet on a chair and leaned over while trying to read) so every 30-60 minutes, I would need a break so I could regain the feeling in my legs and stretch out my neck. Theo was very accomodating and if I needed a break earlier, all I had to do was let him know. The whole process went by pretty quick! I brought a book to read, though sometimes it was hard to concentrate during the outline. Some areas hurt more than others, but everyone was very encouraging. During the coloring, I was able to concentrate more on the book. Theo would give updates on what he was doing and let me check it out in the mirror as things were coming along. Finally, when we were done, I was able to see the final product and I was SO happy! It's been 3 days since the tattoo and I've encountered minimal scabbing. While this will probably be my last tattoo (no more pain, please), but if I were to ever get another, I would definitely return. Highly recommended for anyone looking to get some ink done! read more

Great service and very friendly. I went in to get a cover-up tattoo filled in that I had outlined at another shop. The service difference was like night and day. They took me in last minute as a walk in and were very accommodating. They also completed the work in 1.5 hours under the time they quoted me, which was a pleasant surprise. Garrett did the work and kept up a great conversation the whole time. After the tattoo, "Mom" took the time to talk to me about tattoo care, and they even gave me a kit with salve and soap to bring home. My first tattoo was some small blue flowers on my ankle, done by a great artist who has since moved to California. I wanted to add to it, so I looked at books and visited shops to find the artist I wanted. I visited one local lady who is acclaimed for her work, but got a negative vibe from her. Wasn't right. Driving home, I saw Mom's yellow shop and stopped by. I immediately liked her. She sat me down in the chair and drew the EXACT design I had in my head on my leg. I was blown away. Great, when can I get it done? She says "my 6 o'clock cancelled, how about then?" Best decision ever. It is a beautiful floral piece. I actually cried when I saw its beauty. I look at my leg every day and love what I see. I have since had the other leg done to match. That design is very personal because Mom took my idea, which is my own handwriting, and made it work. I'm not a wimp but top of the ankle does hurt. She talks you thru the rough spots. She's funny and laid back. She's a cool lady. She is meticulous with sanitation. One million percent recommend Mom's. Friends and I were in Austin for the weekend and two of us were planning on tattoos - I wanted a small feather behind my ear, and my friend wanted a cheetah around her wrist. We communicated a bit with the shop before showing up, and finally walked in on Saturday afternoon. The shop was clean, cold (Texas is hot yo) and the artists are wonderful. My tiny feather was done by Sara, who freehanded it and it's perfect. This was my fourth tattoo, but she still made me feel totally at ease and the final product is amazing. My friend knew she wanted Bradley to do her tattoo, and he was great from the get-go. He let her know her original idea of the cheetah around the wrist really wasn't going to look how she envisioned, and between Bradley, Sara and Mom herself, they all collaborated with us for almost an hour to find the perfect cheetah pose, and suggested different locations for the ink. She finally settled on her ribs (OUCH), and away he went. The end product is incredible - she cried when she saw the final result because it was so much better than she imagined.
