They said the wait was about 30 minutes, so I left my name down, number, and the time they told me I was expected. No calls or anything the entire day. I LOVE these guys at Southside! i spent all day on Congress this weekend and i scheduled an appointment to get a tattoo. i've gotten about 4 tattoos from 3 different artists at this shop and all 3 of them are incredible artists. my pieces are gorgeous and the color is incredible. I'm currently working on a piece with Jett. The sketch itself is incredible, i cannot wait for the actual piece! Highly recommended, they do allow walk in's but i prefer going in and having something drawn up and then schedule a time. they do NOT do piercings. i've been there several times where people walk in and ask about piercings. strictly gorgeous tattoos! i recommend Southside Tattoos to anyone who's looking for a great artist! read more

This was my first tattoo and, although the pain was intense, the end result was so worth it! I am so grateful to Jack at Southside Tattoo for giving me such an amazing tattoo! I really wanted a lion with a fiery colored mane and it turned out amazing and perfect! It was placed to slightly cover/distract away from a scar I have and it was super effective! I couldn't be happier. Jack was super patient with me and was a trooper, tattooing for about 4 hours with short breaks, when my aunt only recommended 2 hours, staying past closing time to finish (now that doesn't mean y'all should push him to go longer than he should, he tattooed that long because I was flying back home the next day so it needed to get done in one session) He paid very close attention to detail and made sure that the colors we chose blended well together and he focused carefully on color placement and tattoo placement. He spent the time to carefully draw out the perfect outline that fit my wishes and was artistically smart. He also recommended adding some blue for contrast which really made the tattoo pop! He also took the time to give me instructions on after care, and during the tattoo he gave me tips to work though the pain. Thank you so much for putting up with my groaning and for giving me amazing body art! 10/10 would recommend him to anyone. Not to mention, his pricing was very very generous. I gave him all the cash left in my wallet as a tip, about 30% of the price he charged me. I really wish I could've given even more. He deserved it. I got my first tattoo when I was 18. Back then, not a lot of girls had tattoos, so I felt like a particular badass. Over the years, I found myself being ashamed of my ink, hiding them with band-aids and covering them with clothing. My worst moment was walking down the isle, in my beautiful strapless white wedding gown, feeling like a convict. I've always been afraid of doing a cover-up, thinking that I would just end up with something bigger and darker than what I have now. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I stopped by Southside to see if they had any suggestions. The shop was busy, and the gentleman (because he WAS a gentleman, polite and responsive) behind the counter told me to look through the books and see if I liked any particular artist. The book I chose happened to be Bart Willis, the owner, and boy, did I choose wisely! Bart took a photo of my tattoo and the ideas I had and came up with a design that I loved. The design was honestly more than I imagined it would be, and I was prepared to be a little let down by the reality. After about an hour in the chair with relatively little pain, I looked in the mirror to see an absolute transformation. What was once a 2-dimensional roadkill lizard is now a vibrant, eclectic piece of art that I literally can't take my eyes off of. I'm thrilled with my experience, and would recommend Bart to anyone needing to revitalize an aging tattoo. Thank you Bart, for making me proud to be myself again! read more

So the hubs and I went in looking to get wedding bands. Right away Eric said that was stupid (not in so many words but he got his point across). He asked questions trying to get to the root of what we actually wanted. He said he was booked up for a few weeks. I wasn't in a rush so I decided to take the time and figure out what I wanted before I went back. Eric called about 30 minutes later and said he had some ideas and a short amount of time THAT night if I wanted. Uh...yeah! I went back and he had sketched out a few options. He was struggling with the two images not being suitable with one another. He asked me..what do you really want out of this? So I told him the deep down truth. Five minutes later he came up with a design that almost brought me to tears. He also suggested a better body placement...on my hip rather than rib cage. The whole thing only took 45 minutes and quite painless. I have other tattoos so I have a basis of comparison. He didn't charge me the full rate but I tipped to make up the difference. When the hubs picked me up I told him that I didn't get the daisy/spade combo we had talked about but rather just the spade. It had scrolling for a feminine touch and the edges were worn and chiseled. When I told him what it meant to me, he cried and said the design was perfect. It may not be a sleeve or a mural but it was original and only for me. Eric did an incredible job of interpreting what I wanted. I couldn't be happier. Anytime someone mentions the word tattoo I tell them that Southside is the only place to go. read more

Bart did an amazing job on my friend's butterfly tattoo -- I don't have a lot to compare it to, but he was quick and from the infrequent grimaces on her face, as painless as repeatedly sticking a needle in your lower back can be. It seemed pretty inexpensive too. He also has a reference to yelp listed on his flyer so customers can write a review if they choose. Cool. Southside is one of the many tattoo shops in Austin. It's by far the best - the staff is professional, patient, and they care about the customer. They really work hard to ensure you have a great experience and get the best artwork that's right for you. I spent a lot of time not only thinking about what I wanted for my first tat, but doing some research and talking to people with experience with the various shops. I'm certain there are other good shops, but for what I had done, Southside was 5 star. My tattoo was fairly complex - from the guys at Southside, Royce was the artist I picked and he was great -- he asked lots of questions and we spent a couple of sessions just getting the artwork right. His vision of what I was describing was spot on. The line work and shading took about 4 sessions, but it was worth the wait and it looks, well, bad ass :-). Royce was great about keeping the appointments, communicating in between sessions, and cool to work with. I couldn't be happier. The other artists seem great too - Noska and Jack were doing their thing during some of my sessions and the customers sounded happy and the artwork looked slick. A few years back, Jack did an excellent job on a quote I asked for on my back, in typewriter font. At the time, I felt he and the shop were really honest. So, I decided to come back the other day to get something a bit more elaborate. I was quoted and told which artists would be best for the piece I was seeking, which was appreciated. A few hours later, I got a call from Royce, who let me know he'd be doing the piece and when we could do it. The customer service already made me comfortable, which was an added bonus. Royce took a lot of effort in making the design I had his own, while still keeping its integrity. Which, was awesome. He also was friendly and accommodating during the session. The placement of the tattoo didn't hurt at all, which helped too. The end result was perfect and exactly what I was seeking. I have not had any of my tattoos done since I've lived here in Austin...so when I started getting the itch to get another one, I turned to sites like this and cityserch to read reviews on local shops. Southside had the best reviews by far, so that's how it all began. I stopped by the shop on Monday to try and schedule a time to get in. I do suggest going in well in advance...I probably didn't do that, sicne I wanted to try to get in in the next few days. I do understand that they take walk ins though, so certainly consider that if you really want to get it done right away. Continuing on, Jack greeted me and was very helpful. He tried to get me in within a few days, but he was pretty booked up and so he recommended Royce. I called back the next day and Royce took my info, called me back and got me in that same day on Tuesday. I can't say enough GREAT things about Royce. I thought I knew what I wanted, but took his advice about how it would look on my wrist and decided to change it. He spent an hour with me going over different options trying to incorporate the meaning I wanted in my tattoo. In the end, I decided to go with some text in a font that I brought in. He was completely understanding in what I wanted and patient through the whole process. Then the tattoo, I got it on my wrist--which most people say is the msot painful. Today I received a tattoo from Jett, specifically Mt. Rainier and some trees. I kept it pretty simple. I have a few other tattoos and I will say this: Jett has given me the best tattoo yet. Other artists have almost acted like they didn't care, or had an apathetic attitude. This was not the case with Jett; I originally went in for a cover up and after he drew a few sketches of the cover up I decided that wasn't exactly what I wanted. He didn't act exasperated at all, and continued trying to help me decide what I wanted. He did NOT pressure me, scaled down his drawings with no complaints and overall did a wonderful job. I came in last month with the idea of getting the lion of judah tatted on my chest for my first tattoo. I had the opportunity to speak with Jack about what I had in mind and he was very helpful. After my first visit, which was basically like a short interview session of what I wanted, we had another meet up about 3 days later. At that point he had pretty much sketched up in complete details the image of the tattoo, and I was amazed at what he did. I almost jumped on the table right then and there. He said there was still a little work that needed to be done so had to wait. Finally the day comes, and I'm about to get tatted for the first time, im calling him Jake.. some reason when ever I thought of his name i thought of Jake from training day, his name is jack though and I know that now. Very calm artist, didn't startle me or make me nervous. Very patient. I appreciated all of that. Very good and steady with the needle. We were able to finish the whole tattoo in one session which I'm thankful for because the initial pain was tough but once you get used to it, the tattoo itself was easy.
