The Salem Opry House is located in a building that was constructed in the 1920s and used as a…read moreschool which they have renovated into their restaurant space. The old building has a nice atmosphere and was the peak experience of my visit here. My dining party was disturbed by the menu listing a $6 upcharge for sharing an entree which I've never seen that before and we don't ever share entrees but it just sounded ridiculous (I have since seen a handful of other restaurants doing this strange practice around this area). So your meal starts out with turnip greens (with pork so I don't eat that), cole slaw and hushpuppies. For our entrees my dining companion (my mom) got a hamburger steak with a sweet potato and I got the grilled salmon with a sweet potato. So... my grilled salmon was the most well done fish I've ever been served and it was literally crunchy on the outside and very dry on the inside which some might say it was burned. I've had more moist and delicious salmon jerkey than what I was served here. The sweet potato was the really good and the best part of my meal. My mom enjoyed her hamburger steak and sweet potato. We both just drank water and the price for our meals came out to $43.68 which included an odd $1.38 service fee before tip. We thought for the rather small serving size of the entrees the price was on the expensive side. Overall I have no plans of returning to this spot as the food was just meh... I did really like the historic building. It totally isn't fair to compare other places to New Orleans but that is my point of reference and I have to say this area is really a food desert compared to The Greater New Orleans area and Acadiana. So much of the food I've tried in these parts is just really bland and to my taste usually dissappointing.

Living on the West Coast, I avoided gas station food at all cost, it's a no go. Now that I live in…read morethe South, man some of the best food is at gas stations owned by mom and pops. There's always a small line at this gas stations deli, so you know they got the goods. These dude's sell fresh seafood, you can get it boiled/fried, or fresh. I always go by here on my way home from Louisiana. When I'm talking about a road trip snack, I'm not talking about slim Jim's, day old burger, or chips. I'm talking crab legs, shrimp, crawfish pies, fresh fried juicy catfish! Boiled shrimp was cooked perfectly, wasn't overcooked swimming in that seasoning. They were frying shrimp and catfish when I walked in. $10 for a box of 5 catfish filets, and 10 jumbo shrimp, it was nice and crispy, needed a tad more seasoning, but great price! Catfish was big, and it was flaky juicy goodness. Giant Turkey wing for $2.49 so why not? Add that to my cart I wasn't a huge fan of it, but it wasn't bad. This is my snack before dinner 1 crawfish meat pie 1/2lb boiled shrimp 5 fried catfish filet 10 jumbo fried fish 1 giant turkey wing's a little under $20 after tax.

This is a huge gas station store and "restaurant" (it has two booths). The seafood looked and smelled delicious (and my husband is cajun so we are picky about good boil). We were super tempted to eat but it was only like 10am so we weren't ready for lunch. The store was clean and well stocked. Bathrooms were very run down and beat up, but they were clean and had toilet paper (though only one soap dispenser and it was out). Definitely the best stop within 30 miles either way. It's attached to a Chevron and I have no idea how the tired-looking Texaco will survive if ppl want anything more than gas. They just can't compete.
