We've been a few times. The last time we went the ac vent was so filthy it was hairy. And to make matters worse we were sat right right next to it And water was leaking through it. And dripping on us. The boss/manager wasn't there and the staff of younger folks were having open convos in the restaurant about bedroom activities between adults. Fernando's is great; they are always super friendly and quick. Prices are very fair and probably the only place to get a margarita in Magee. The spice and seasoning in the rice and food overall has toned down some since I first started visiting a couple years ago, unfortunately (maybe someone complained it was too spicy, idk) but I'm still gonna give them 5 stars because I love them and they have been so reliable. Let's talk about the positives first, the place is cute, clean, reasonably priced with fast service. But the star of the show is always THE FOOD, and that where we have an epic fail. The lightning fast chips came out with a few large pieces on top with crushed small ones below. There's no time I want to dip a 1/2 inch chip into salsa. But that proved not to be a problem, the salsa was too salty. Can someone take the salt shaker away from the person making it? The tea, which anyone who reads my reviews knows I hold in high regard is always a tell for the meal quality. Let's just say, the tea's warning was not lost on me. Please kind Sir, can we have an extra tea bag or two? But the shrimp fajitas is one for the recipe book. Yellow and zucchini squash with peppers and onions, really? Who thought yellow squash would be good with fajitas? The menu stated jumbo shrimp, but clearly they are using a different measuring scale than everybody else. I would classify them regular size shrimp. Don't get me started on how they were cooked and the seasoning. I had very little expectation, but I never expected it to be this horrible. The food is just ok, but not what you call good. The salsa isn't good. It doesn't taste fresh and the flavor is all wrong. The chips are ok but not fresh. The shredded beef tasted kinda like turkey somehow. It was sort of disgusting because you'd think beef would taste like beef. It makes you wonder if there's something wrong with it. The chicken is all dark meat and didn't have much flavor at all. The rice and beans were ok. The food would be better if they'd try to season it properly a little more to give more flavor. Definitely wouldn't return or recommend because of the food. The waitress was very polite and accommodating though. read more

I ordered the combo fajitas and they were like shredded tiny pieces of chicken and beef. They were so overcooked and have zero flavor. The shrimp was rubbery and fishy. Well I'm sorry to say this was not my favorite place to eat as I absolutely LOVE Mexican dining. I briefly read a few reviews right before we went in and it seemed like the chips and salsa received many positive reviews. Here's where they lost me. Just about everything they make is smothered in white cheese sauce. Even the enchiladas. WTH? So they do have their version of enchilada sauce called rancheros and I asked for a sample of it prior to ordering it. It was ok I guess . I figured it would be better then two tons of cheese sauce. I got a dish called the 'Pancho' which had a cheese enchilada, a rolled taco and a shredded beef burrito. I substituted the white cheese sauce for their enchilada sauce and when everything came out it was like room temperature. Not even close to hot. There were four of us and we all had lukewarm food. They were very nice and actually remade everything but the funny part is it was no hotter then the original. Sigh..... my meal looked all the same so I wasn't even sure what I was eating until I cut into it. My boyfriend got the same meal but kept the cheese sauce. Honestly his was better but who can eat that much cheese sauce without getting completely grossed out. It came with Rice and beans and it was fine but my overall opinion is that I would never go back. They do serve their drinks in mini pitchers so I liked that and the chips and salsa were good and they give everyone their own separate bowl for salsa so that was cool but everything was very very salty. I am a salt lover and I can't remember ever saying something had too much salt so watch out before you reach for that salt shaker. Our waiter was super good and he isn't the cook so we can't blame him for anything so 5 stars for that guy. Wish I could remember his name but he was an African American guy with a great personality. Being that this town is tiny it's probably not the worst choice to stop for a bite but I wish we had went to Hattiesburg to eat because they have a ton of great places. Oh well. Mexican is always a bit of a standby food for me. When everything else around looks absolutely sketchy, you can usually count on Mexican food to be at least edible. That's the case with Fernando's - it's edible, it's food, it's not going to give you massive diarrhea. We stopped in for lunch, because after a week visiting this town I had had all the Sonic I care to for the foreseeable future, and there's not much else going on here. We ordered off the lunch menu: fiance got the single chicken enchilada, and I got the burrito frito. The chips and salsa were good, nothing extraordinary. The drinks were large, and served in pitchers, causing the fiance some level of confusion until I explained that you drink directly out of the pitcher/mug. The enchilada looked good, though I can't comment on actual taste. The burrito frito is your typical fried burrito covered in cheese sauce. The outer layer was crisp without being tough, and the inside was well-cooked, though I wish it had more flavor to it. The meat tasted like it was mostly unseasoned, and was fluffed up with rice. Not bad, just not great. Beans and rice were the same: not bad, but a little on the bland side. Service was fast, courteous, and all the employees are incredibly friendly, but not in that overbearing and obnoxious southern way where you just want to shake them by the neck and scream "Shut the **** up already and just take my order!". This is refreshing, because if I have one more waitress with less teeth than fingers try to start a conversation with me here, I'm going to flip out. All in all, it was a meal. Nothing more, nothing less. The only negative: portion sizes are tiny. Both of us were hungry again within an hour. Still, given that the average price of a lunch special hovers around $5, I can't really complain. If you're passing through and want to grab a quick bite that isn't fast food, this is the place to go. read more

Chips were homemade. Light and crunchy. There were two of us, so we shared the steak fajitas for two. It really was enough for three. Generous portions of steak meat, onions etc., was very tasty. Also- bonus- the little pico salad they give was REAL lettuce- green leaf and romaine style instead of iceberg junk. It's the little touches like that which I appreciate. Fernando's took the place of the much beloved Manolo's. I ordered the Mexican tacos and grilled veggies. As anyone who has had authentic Mexican food knows, Mexican tacos or street tacos have meat, onion and cilantro as their ONLY ingredients. These tacos had cheddar cheese. I chose this dish because I am trying to eat healthier, and don't really need the cheese. I was hungry, so I ate it and didn't tell the management about their mistake and misrepresentation of street tacos. However, one hour later, my stomach did complain. Not recommended.
