This canvas for public art was designed R&R Studios to look like the living room of a house. It was created by artist duo Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt. In 2001 Art in America Public Art in Review selected The Living Room as one of the best Art in Public Art projects. When it was first created The Living Room doubled as the entrance to a furniture showroom. The Living Room was designed as an oversized living room with orange floral wallpaper, curtain, red couch, and a window that played a clever trick of scale and perspective. The showroom is long gone, but the sculpture itself is still there, under layers of spray paint and dirt. It is used for temporary art installations but most often it is covered in graffiti. The land the Living Room sits on is for sale for $37.5 million so its days may finally be numbered.

Fortunately, Art Wynwood was fully indoors. This was the first time I had been to Art Wynwood and I enjoyed seeing classic pieces from Latin American artists Wifredo Lam and Amelia Pelaez, pop and surrealist pieces from famous artists like Warhol and Dali, as well as contemporary pieces from lesser known artists around the world. I was really pleased that the show featured several local galleries showcasing local talent. Art Wynwood reminded me of a scaled down version of Art Miami, I thought it was very nicely produced and would love to go back next year.

Located near a row of factories and thrift shops in East Hialeah, the Leah Arts District has brought some of the original Wynwood talent (Atomiko, Kazilla and Didirok) to showcase their talent on the walls of old and underused factory walls. Located close to the tri-rail tracks, the occasional train passing added to the funky industrial vibe. In addition to the Wynwood heavyweights, there were also a few local artists doing paintings both traditional and abstract, including a mod portrait of Celia Cruz. Today's inaugural event, besides one of the original cafeterias still open from the industrial past, included the Mr. Good Stuff burger truck and Yayi's Dessert Flan. Klangbox DJ'S kept the scene going with their blend of trip hop, 90s old school hip hop and ambient trance. This being Hialeah, traffic has to be mentioned. Since the area is still up and coming and the event was on a weekend, there was plenty of parking in the spaces from the adjacent factories. It's located off NW 62 St, so a quick drive from I95. Leah Arts District is not in real close proximity of bars and restaurants. It is in a very industrial district. The quality of the murals is great. I drove around to see the murals, you could easily walk the area but then again, it is very industrial. I saw everything in less than 30 minutes. The murals are nice to see but if you go set your expectations accordingly. I believe they may hold special events.

I feel the gallery itself is spacious despite all the people flowing in and out. They have various coffee, drinks, food stands. Art during Basel can be expensive, but there are also smaller works you can often get at a fraction of the main pieces. It's always nice when you get to meet the artist itself.

It was a pleasure visiting this place in observing the artwork and meeting who I think was the artist mining the gallery in the back. She was pretty friendly and allowed us to take a look around. Though we were there only to watch, if anyone is interested in buying, price range starts from the lower hundreds and up. This is one of the many ideal places to watch some good artwork if you happen to be in this neighborhood.
