I love the unassuming rawness of this complex. A number of Anselm Kiefer's large-scale works overwhelm entire spaces: this place was made for them. It's difficult to pick a favorite here but the most unusual is Ernesto Neto's 'É o Bicho,' a 2001 assembly of lycra tulle, polyamide tubes, hooks, tumeric, black pepper and cloves. Looking like a series of large-scale udders hanging from the ceiling, the aroma of the two seasonings inserted into the pendulum-like protuberances is a sensory delight.

The murals themselves are massive and they're professional, but scale alone doesn't make art work. Context does. Shepard Fairey's augmented reality layer is the differentiator here. It's not a gimmick. When you scan a mural with your phone, the piece opens up into layers and motion. It's the artist's way of saying "there's more here than what you see." It works because it's restrained, not constantly pulling you into your screen. You're still in the neighborhood. You're just seeing deeper. The guide we had knew the economics of gentrification in Wynwood. Knew which artists have been here for years and which are new money. Knew the politics of murals, why some walls get painted and others get buffed, why some artists collaborate and some don't. That knowledge cost something to build. You're paying for it. We took three teenagers, ages 14-17. Not a group naturally inclined to stand still for street art. They asked questions about technique, about why certain artists choose certain walls, about whether the AR experience changes how you see the piece or adds distraction. They engaged. That's not about impressive art alone, that's about the tour structure creating room for actual thinking instead of passive consumption. The neighborhood is dense and chaotic and intentional all at once. You'll see pieces that are technically flawless next to pieces that are deliberately rough. Some murals are massive, some are character-scale. Some artists are making statements about politics, some about beauty, some about ownership. The variation is what keeps it alive. A sanitized art walk would kill this. Walking it yourself is free and worth doing once. Walking it with the tour is $29 and worth doing if you want to understand why these walls matter to the city and why some artists chose to paint them. The difference is context. Context costs something, but you leave with more than photos. The sun hits different at 4 PM than at 11 AM, so timing matters if photography is part of your thing. The neighborhood gets foot traffic but it's not overwhelming. You're in a real place, not a theme park. That texture is part of why this works.

Located close to the tri-rail tracks, the occasional train passing added to the funky industrial vibe. In addition to the Wynwood heavyweights, there were also a few local artists doing paintings both traditional and abstract, including a mod portrait of Celia Cruz. Today's inaugural event, besides one of the original cafeterias still open from the industrial past, included the Mr. Good Stuff burger truck and Yayi's Dessert Flan. Klangbox DJ'S kept the scene going with their blend of trip hop, 90s old school hip hop and ambient trance. This being Hialeah, traffic has to be mentioned. Since the area is still up and coming and the event was on a weekend, there was plenty of parking in the spaces from the adjacent factories. It's located off NW 62 St, so a quick drive from I95. Leah Arts District is not in real close proximity of bars and restaurants. It is in a very industrial district. The quality of the murals is great. I drove around to see the murals, you could easily walk the area but then again, it is very industrial. I saw everything in less than 30 minutes. The murals are nice to see but if you go set your expectations accordingly. I believe they may hold special events.

Juan has known both of my parents since the 80's and has worked with them many times since. My father recently died, leaving a large home full of furniture that I had no idea what to do with. I called Juan and he came over the next day to go through and catalog the entire house. Then, he called me back within 48 hours informing me that he was able to sell more than half of it! He coordinated the entire pick-up and payment process with his buyer and everything was paid for and gone before the end of the week! I want to thank him for resolving a such painful experience so quickly and painlessly. He was easy to work with it and wastes no time, exactly what I needed in this particular situation.
