When most people speak of Williamsburgos (aka Poblacion, Makati), the first places they'll mention…read morewill most likely be the taco and yakitori joints on Felipe Street, or the Latin American chicken shack on Ebro. But one of my favorite places in Poblacion is actually a decrepit little pub, located beside Ringside and a couple of sleazy strip bars (it IS Makati's red light district, after all) mostly frequented by geriatric Caucasian expats and their Filipina wives, and maybe the odd hipster or two. That being said, The Woodman's Head is a great place to grab some beers and gin and tonics for cheap. I'm talking 60 pesos cheap. In fact, I kinda hesitate to write about this place because I am clannish about where I like to hang out, and prefer it if people don't hang out where I do when I go out because I am a notorious introvert. Another really great plus about this place is that Travis, a good friend of mine, has done a great service to The Woodman's Head by introducing Deep Fried Pickles(!!!!) to their menu. I know that dill pickles aren't everyone's cup of tea, but hear me out. When they are sliced thinly, deep fried in batter and dipped in Travis's magical Ranch Sauce (I realize that sounded vaguely pervy), it's sooooo good. Would definitely eat these even without the aid of alcohol. However, going to the Woodman's Head can be a little bit intimidating without a posse (unless you're a dude. If you're a woman going there independently, I suggest you bring friends, because). Still, it's a part of Williamsburgos that's off the beaten path, that I enjoy going to when my night is winding down, especially when I can't be bothered to shout over my beers just so my friends can hear me.

Usually, I go here after a long day and just sit at the bar. I order my beer, watch a bit of TV then head home. Simple. No noisy gossip, no blaring dance music... just a big ass beer and basketball on the TV. The food is pretty decent. It's just a bit heavy for me if I'm here alone. I recommend the Spam Chips! Love those! The sausages are good too. But, seriously, you're here for the beer and you can't go wrong with a draft beer. They have flavored beers for the girls. If you're looking for something sweet to drink, I recommend the Caramel Beer. They have promos for every day of the week. For example, they have Girl's Night Out Wednesdays. Ladies get Buy 1, Take 1 on all cocktails and wine. On Thirsty Thursdays, my personal fave, all their available foreign beers are only Php100. NICE! If you're feeling the oldie bug and want a chill night, this is THE place to go! Who knows, maybe you'll see me sitting by the bar when you visit. ;)

Its gates are (literally) open for anyone and everyone to step in, have a few beers, and chow on some grub. Being a pub, they take pride in their beer and whiskey selections. Perhaps not the widest selection, ever, but pretty good for a bar that I can walk to. But, being somewhat of a buffalo wings connoisseur, I couldn't help but give theirs a try. I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked their recipe! I like my wings a little sour, and this hit the spot perfectly. Maybe a bit too spicy for my taste (although, I'm not complaining), but it is great for a quick buffalo wings fix. Look for Rachel -- she's the server who is stationed by the door. At least during the evenings. She'll take care of you.

I like that they don't allow smoking inside, but no worries to the smokers, they do have tables outside if you wanna enjoy a smoke with your beer. The booths inside are nice though! So probably better to just step out when you need to smoke. The booths are big and spacious. Perfect for big groups! It's one of those watering holes where you don't need to force yourself to go to; it just comes naturally to have a beer at before heading home. I'd say that this one is well in my top 5 liquor consumption establishments in San Juan. Cozy booths, outside smoking area, decent prices and good food (although their serving size for the chicken poppers was reduced as of late), It's a nice combination and I really can't complain every time I visit. There are, However, things that run into mind when I hear the name McLarens. Given that the establishment is based on the same bar in *that* popular show, I feel that something is missing. I think that the place needs to feel a bit more "Pubby" and a little less "Bar-ish".

It's not that it's a last resort, it's because Mulligan's is always reliable and great for big groups of friends. (And, for the 24-hour branch, at least we don't have to worry about getting kicked out during closing time.) As for the menu, the servings are huge and usually good for 3-4 people, (sometimes even 5-6) with a complete bar and all kinds of beer (even some foreign brands). Their popularity in BF has recently lead to another branch along Kalayaan Avenue in Makati. The place that I have been able to turn to to satisfy that craving is Charlie's. Their menu offers a wide variety, but I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to burgers, nothing fancy necessary! For this, the Bacon Black Angus Cheeseburger does the job. They have plenty of different options for topped fries, as well. I've had their Irish Nachos and Dirty Fries, which are both very good, but can be a little sauce-heavy from time to time. Buffalo wings are a favorite food item of mine, and Charlie's does a good job with them. I have also tried their Sticky Wings--also good, but a tad too sweet for my taste. Another reason why Charlie's has become my go-to is their beer selection. I'm a big fan of craft beers, and so it was a pleasant surprise seeing plenty of imported beers in the fridge at Charlie's. Overall a chill place to eat some bomb food with good company.

The last two, on the other hand, were quite good, particularly the chicken tenders, which had a good balance of sweetness and spiciness. My friends and I then tried the two-patty burger, and I enjoyed the patties so much! They were juicy and flavorful, and the buns soaked so much of its juice, so they became a bit soggy. The fries that go with the burger were also good. We also tried the chicken Jambalaya, which was smothered with pesto sauce. The chicken pieces were a bit dry, but the pesto sauce did its work. What I loved the most about this dish was the RICE. Goodness, it was so good! It was spicy, but not overwhelming, and I think it's much better paired with the burger patty than the chicken.
