Good coffee ~ with Hipster sweeteners
    Justin D.

I normally dislike places like curator, cos they tend to be Hipster magnets! But the coffee is too good to pass on. And though your barista may look hipster, he knows how to make a good cup of joe. Haven't tried any food so cant comment on that. BUT this place transforms into uber cocktail lounge after 7pm, so if you get caught still sipping coffee when they dim the lights down; then take your studying ass to starbucks . They know cocktails here too! (But bring that expense account plastic cos drinks ave at 500 a pop! ) PS: my choice of drink is dark matter - long black!

I blame The Curator for starting the whole "hidden bar" trend that hit Makati like a ton of bricks. (Actually, it was Dillinger's, but meh). Literally hidden from view by a single door at the back of Cyrano Wine Bar, The Curator is a posh coffee place by day, and a killer bar at night. While I can't comment too much on Curator's Bar Mode (Aside from the fact that it's freaking pricey), I can definitely comment on its cafe version. As a coffee place, it has got to be the most snobbish, and I mean that in the best possible way. No windows, but Curator makes up for it with a lot of style, and a surprising amount of comfort. While Curator's coffee menu is the smallest I've seen, the coffee they do serve is Grade A. Definitely Third Wave, if you're into that. Curator is a nice place to drop by if you want to get out of the sun and want some topnotch coffee. It's also a solid option if you want to impress a date, because Curator wins at style and substance.

Loved it , plane and simple. Walk through the coffee shop and through the back door and you'll find a gem of a cocktail bar , in every sense of the word. Advice: sit at the bar , the fellas are top notch !! Can't wait till I'm back in the Philippines

New establishments mushroom around Makati in such a fast pace that I always find something new to explore every time I would hang around the district, and most of these new establishments have cool concepts that always make me wish I'd thought of them first. One of such establishments is The Curator Coffee and Cocktails, which is just about the coolest watering hole you can find in the area. What I love about The Curator is its attempt at bringing the speakeasy culture in the Philippines. I love speakeasies because of their mystery and their exclusivity, and The Curator feels exactly like a secret bar or hideaway because it is tucked discreetly behind a wine lounge. You have to know where to look in order to find it, but as soon as you step into their bar, you will instantly fall in love with the cavern-like feel that lends a very exciting and enigmatic feel to the place. The place is dimly lit, the walls are raw and unfinished concrete, and the furniture is sparse yet comfortable. Hip music is piped over the speakers. The guests are afforded a view of the bar, where the magic happens. Another unique selling point for The Curator is its extensive bar setup. In the morning, from 7AM to 6PM daily, they open the espresso bar where they serve coffee from the famous EDSA Beverage Design Group. As soon as they shut down the espresso counter, cocktail hour begins and you can sit by the bar and have the mixologist-in-residence mix up a cocktail for you - you can select from the a la carte menu, or you can have them personalize a cocktail according to your preference. Expect to fork out some considerable dough, though the experience is something that every fun-loving coffeeholic and cocktail enthusiast should try at least once.

    Kenya believe it?
    Christina Z.

After my afternoon shoot in Legazpi, I realised that I had not been to one of the coffee places that my friend had told me to try. As soon as I stepped into The Curator, it felt like I was led to a secret meeting place of villains who play poker in between while waiting for the hero to arrive and rescue the damsel in distress. I mean, I went off base with that description. However, it does look so mysterious from the inside. Aside from being a cafe, The Curator doubles as a cocktail bar. I didn't get the chance to try their The Girl With The Pearl Earring because I arrived before they could serve cocktails. I did ask which coffee they could recommend based on what I'm currently feeling and they gave me Kenya. Coincidentally, it was their BOD (Brew of the Day at P120). Kenya believe it was good? It was dark and rich. It somehow legitimised the fact that I am probably in a super villain's lair. And I'm no coffee connoisseur but it somehow had a citrus taste to it. With The Curator, the twist to enjoying your coffee is by way of using liquid sugar. They're all placed in a test tube and properly labeled. I didn't want to lose the flavour to the sugar but I went for the muscovado a bit. I also had their Belgian Chocolate Lace Cookie (P70) so the sugar wasn't necessary. I've yet to come back and try out their cocktails or possibly just go for breakfast. I'm excited to bring a friend over so we can try a handful of their craft cocktails, be drunk and be merry.

    Iced coffee with milk!:)

Discovering secret places in Makati always excites me. I know that there a lot more that I haven't discovered and I've already made it a personal goal to find them all. As much as I try to keep whatever I found to myself and a few friends, I'm really not good at keeping secrets. I announce my discoveries as soon as I stumble upon them. I've already told a lot of people about Curator; I think its time to tell you all about it, guys! Curator hides itslef at the back of the wineshop called Cyrano at Palanca street. The first time I was here, it was a friday night and I was out for drinks. I was a little bit puzzled, thinking I got lost looking for it. The entrance to narnia is just a freaking door! Second time around, just around lunch, I was surprised to see the door open. I think they do two different operations on mornings and in evenings. I learned that they serve cocktails and drinks at night, cofee and juices by day. Glad I was able to try the feel on both occasions. I like it better during the day because, helloo, me like coffee. It's so strong but you can also sweeten it by adding liquified white sugar/muscovado/honey/brown sugar on it (yes, they have it all!). Ooh! And with a side of milk, of course :) Try it soon!:)

Interiors are beautiful and cozy. The leather chairs, central bar, and decor take you to another world where you can enjoy your classic cocktail, scotch, or wine in utter opulence. The staff are always efficient and helpful when serving and suggesting drinks if you are feeling a little adventurous. Try the Negroni 1919 or the Espresso Martini. Good selection of wines too and a decent repertoire of Single Malts (for a price!). Bar chow is available too if you feel like you need more than the refillable snacks they serve you. It's also the perfect place to have an intimate conversation or a casual meeting. Cigar smokers and smokers alike will enjoy the fact that you can smoke here (sorry non-smokers!). Price points are expensive compared to your average bars or speakeasies but you're at The Peninsula after all. The overall feel is nostalgic, classic, and definitely for those who enjoy high quality cocktails and drinks in a place that makes you feel like you're transported to a bar in Cuba with different world music playing in the background.

I was a regular of Bugsy's long before I discovered Red Rabbit, to the point that the moment I entered the smoking area, I'd tip my head to one of the waiters and when I'd sit at what I claimed as my spot, there would be an ice cold Pale Pilsen waiting for me already. One night, the waiters told me about the private place behind Bugsys and, always game for weird stuff, I readily agreed to be lead into it. I was always curious of the place next to the smoking area-- it was a partially frosted glass door, and what looked like an office space beyond it. Little did I know that one of the wall's panels swung into Red Rabbit, the hidden speakeasy behind Bugsys. It's a private place, with a full bar. Their specialties are strong!cocktails and a pretty decent whisky collection. The area is non smoking and dimly lit, as with all speakeasys I've been to. (My friend has a joke that these places are where you would bring your "kabit" or your lover to when trying to hide from your wife or girlfriend. And I agree! Haha) What I really liked about Red Rabbit was that the song list was very chill, and that the bathroom has a dimmer. A what now? A dimmer. Maybe I was just drunk, or maybe I just enjoy the truly simpler things in life, but Red Rabbit's nice, air conditioned, well kept bathroom is one of the nicest I've been to (That's inside a bar) I really appreciate the dimmer, you know? Imagine when you're blindingly drunk and you want to ahem, relive yourself, those nasty fluorescent lights of most typical bathrooms just incites a headache and I can't do my business properly .' Now, with Red Rabbit's bathroom where you can adjust the lights to your comfort, you can go do your business at your leisure. (Did I really just wax poetic about a bathroom? You bet I did.) By the way, Red Rabbit's mac and cheese is also pretty good.

It's at the back of a popular and populated bar in Makati but it's managed to keep its secrecy to its core. They've never even advertised their existence and I'm not sure if it's still there because they keep their doors closed and discreet this whole time. But the few times I've gone in, it's also had a fair amount of people enjoying a quiet and quality time. The drinks are potent, the charcuterie above standard, and the dry aged steak worth it. When it comes to passwords, it's close to keeping the tradition strong. The guys at Bugsy's won't tell you what's in their back room and you really have to intend to go there by yourself!
