Appreciating the scenic surroundings of The Big Island from the right hand side of the plane.
    Seth A.

Flying Mokulele Airlines was an exhilarating experience! Here I was...interested in flying from Kahului Airport (OGG) on the island of Maui heading towards Hilo (ITO) on The Big Island of Hawaii. I had 2 options of airlines to pick from. Standard ole Hawaiian Airlines or this, the local commuter airline...Mokulele! Both airlines were priced similarly. Well, I was island hopping so I only needed a one-way flight. Both Hawaiian and this Mokulele were $99 and each had multiple departures over to Hilo throughout the day. I figured...why not try Mokulele since I saw online the aircraft they used was a Cessna...I immediately knew that meant a propeller plane! And...throughout my travels...I've always found it more worthwhile to fly propeller planes on short little 30 - 60 minute trips to remote destinations because they act as sightseeing flights...rather than an actual commercial flight transporting passengers. This way...you get the best of both worlds! You get transported to where you need to go plus receive an intimate experience being afforded outstanding landscape views for wherever you're going to. So...my decision was made easily! Mokulele Airlines it would be! Woohoo! I already knew I'd be taking plenty of pictures on the flight and plus making a few recordings for my YouTube Channel. I was excited about this "adventure" and overall saw Mokulele Airlines as a tourist flightseeing trip rather than being flown from one point to the next. Let me provide some informative details about my experience... - For here at Kahului Airport (OGG), Mokulele Airlines has its own separate commuter section terminal right beside the main terminal. I didn't know this until walking around and getting a little lost. But I asked a security guard and he directed me to follow the pedestrian pathway around the terminal for maybe 1/5 of a mile. - Mokulele Airlines has an outdoor terminal with 2 gates. Upon approaching the counter, I immediately was greeted by an agent for check-in. The whole setting and vibe here exuded a tropical island ambiance, with the sun and palm trees set right beside the seats while waiting for departures...overall, it felt far from the realities of a real airline terminal! One small issue when checking in...they immediately weighed my carry-on bag (which had to be checked regardless because the prop plane was too small to store luggage in a compartment or underneath the seat). Now, their policy for bags is 15lbs maximum. My bag was 25lbs which meant I had to pay $20 in person for the extra 10lbs of weight. This was disappointing as I felt there was no warning about this when I booked online. Still, I looked at the bigger picture that I was receiving a sightseeing flight for $99 + $20...still ultra cheap for travel and tourism. - They DO NOT screen you and you DO NOT walk through a security line or get scanned. That was interesting. I guess as long as you don't appear to be suspicious and as long as your bag is screened, you're really no threat to the airplane. - You DO NOT receive a boarding pass or a seat assignment! When your flight is ready to board...they'll announce it over the loudspeaker and call out your name at the gate for which you raise your hand that you're present. Then they specifically tell you which row you're sitting in... Btw, this is the configuration of the plane... - 2 pilots. - 5 rows. - 2 seats per row with max capacity at 10 people. - 7 people total on board for my flight. How cool! Also, when checking in, I mentioned to the CSR agent how I desired a window seat (although every seat is a window seat). She basically said to choose sitting on the right-hand side of the plane for the best coastline views. Thank you for that! Upon boarding...we were escorted behind the fenced in security area. You can take a photo outside the plane which all of us passengers did. The pilots provide safety instructions. They start the engines and immediately taxi to the runway within a few moments. The flight to Hilo was 60 minutes they said. Upon taking off, the sights and surroundings from high above were wonderful! I was loving every minute of the experience. I snapped beautiful photos flying over Maui and then continuing along the eastern part of The Big Island. For a partly sunny day, there was barely any bumpy turbulence, a very pleasant flight. And obviously there's no in-flight service or refreshments since it's just you and the pilots. Overall, I had an incredible experience receiving a first-hand look island hopping from Maui to Hilo. Flying Mokulele Airlines was the perfect decision I made for enjoying a sightseeing experience rather than taking a large Boeing jumbo jet with Hawaiian Airlines. I can't recommend Mokulele Airlines enough regardless of the small upcharge for my baggage. For myself being 1 of 7 passengers it felt like a private and personal tour which cost $119...the best deal you'll find in Hawaii whether being transported around by plane, helicopter or boat!

I would give a negative star rating if possible. They are charging a 25% reschedule fee. Per the Mayor and Governor, visitors have been asked to cancel their travel plans. Mokulele says screw you there's no consideration for the horrific situation. Apparently they see it as an opportunity to make easy cash off people trying to comply and be respectful of the government's request. Shame on this company. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

So small, I'm bigger than the door!

I've been on this airline since I was too young to remember. It's the only means to get to Molokai from one of the bigger islands, by plane. But, it's also extremely less hectic & easy. The terminal is separate from the main, larger at OGG. Off to the side you can easily park- walk right up to the check-in counter. It doesn't take long to check in. The staff are all very helpful & friendly. Such a small extension, there's some restrooms & a vending machine around the corner- waiting areas have plenty of chairs- all open air concept. They call each flight up & have you line up according to where they have you seated. They pick your seats so weight is distributed evenly. ...the planes are TINY. Only 10 per flight plus the captain & co-pilot. No flight attendant or food/beverage. And, for good reason. These are less than an hour flights & too small to serve anything- turbulence is also more of a factor on these. The views are pretty much better than chartering a helicopter tour! We did a day trip from Maui to Molokai. The pilots both ways were fantastic- took the scenic route & ensured we got the opportunity for some photos. Their accommodating nature & sense of humor was great. Safety was upmost priority, but they aren't nearly as strict or anal like major commercial flights. The planes are VERY small, though. It's a little hard getting in & out on those stairs- just a cable for a "railing"... but the flight crew is there to lend you a hand. Inside is nothing fancy, but very cool getting a full view of the cockpit & watching the pilots do their routine. We really enjoyed their fun commentary & welcoming vibe. Turbulence is nearly unavoidable on these small flights, but the pilot handled it SO well! My 1 year old nephew was so enthralled, the turbulence we did encounter didn't even phase him. My past memories were needing that "barf bag" in the back of the seat... luckily my stomach has hardened in my adult hears, but the bags are still there if necessary! This was a lot of fun. Returning was just as easy- same routine & just a lot more personal when it's a small flight of 10 or less. All of the personnel at each airport were great. We felt welcome & in safe hands both ways. And, also really appreciated them letting us take a minute to get some personal photos- we took this trip for our Dad's memorial since Molokai was our tradition yearly, growing up. I can't applaud this entity enough for their care & condolences- they really made our experience a good one! After this, I'm eager to book again. And, will always remember the awe in my nephew's eyes as he got to watch helicopters take off right next to us, touch the small plane for himself & the entire thrill of the pilot personally welcoming him... thank you to Mokulele for a fantastic trip our family will cherish in loving memory!

Love this little airline. The best way to island hop. Friendly staff and no TSA! Great views of the islands!

We flew from Maui to the Big Island through Mokulele Airlines. There should be better signage or descriptions in flight confirmation emails that indicate exactly where in the Kahului Airport you can find the Mokulele Airlines. It is not in the main terminal, but instead is located pretty far from the main terminals, behind/past the car rental stands. We had to ask two staff members just to make sure we were headed the right direction. The check-in process itself is quite smooth. You don't have to go through a typical security process, and they also tell you to just be there 30 minutes beforehand, and that you can get coffee while you wait in the main terminal if you wanted to. We paid an extra $70 in baggage on top of our $90 flights, since we had to check in a 50-pound luggage for $30 and our carry-ons exceeded the 15 pound limit, so it was an extra $20 for those bags. Any other bags you bring have to go on your lap during your flight, which can be uncomfortable. The flight itself is beautiful - you can see all of Maui and the Big Island, and it is relatively painless, at only a half-hour long. I think it is totally worth it because it's kind of like going on a tour helicopter ride, but with a purpose and it's a bigger vehicle than a helicopter so you'd feel a teeny bit safer. You don't go up high enough in the air to need oxygen masks or go through a typical run-through as on a plane, so it sort of cuts down the hassles of travel. The plane is really tiny, seating only 9 people - 1 person per row (4 rows total) and the back seat. If you can, get the back seat since you will have more space there (however, seating is assigned but you can 'offer' to switch with a passenger as a more experienced passenger of this airline did).

2 check in agents with no line.

$20 fee for any bag with wheels, regardless of if the normal airlines consider that a carryon. The terminal is outside the regular airport. A block down, on the right, just past the rental car kiosks. No security or TSA. Just have your body weight ready, then hope your plane shows up! The Maui - Hana flight was ready early, and my husband and myself were the only 2 who showed up so we left 20 min early and had the plane to ourselves. The 2 female pilots did a great job! They made sure we sat on the best side (right side) to view waterfalls on the way there, plus did a great job with the 15 min flight including take off and landing.

If you've never flown in a small plane before, you DO need to prepare for the fact that these planes get moved around in the wind a bit more than the 737's you are used to.

We've flown them between Oahu to Maui & the Big Island, but have never been to Kauai (yet). On a recent flight from Daniel K. Inouye airport (HNL) to Kahului (OGG), it was a short 100 mile flight taking less than 1/2 hr. You barely get up to cruising altitude, served a prepackaged cup of Passion Fruit/Guava juice and then prep for landing. There is no time in between for snacks. The airfare for inter-island travel is very affordable at a current average of $150 roundtrip. I'll bet that barely covers the fuel plus the juice cup. The planes are the smaller twin engine Boeing 717 (used to be McDonnell-Douglas MD-88) short haul jets that hop back and forth multiple times a day, that they only service them when they land in Oahu. Pro-Tip: Be careful when you open your sealed cup of Passion Fruit/Guava juice because its internal pressure is at sea level while the cabin pressure is at 8000 ft. It will squirt out if you don't open the foil cover slowly to equalize the pressure.

It was great to have direct flights. However, for a 5-6 hour flight this was a bit spare and cramped. Gone are the pre-pandemic amenities like magazines, movie/music entertainment, pillows/blankets, and food. SEA to OGG - two beverage service with a Biscoff packet, water service, agricultural/customs form, and heavy pitch for the Atmos card (Alaska had recently bought Hawaiian). Overpriced snack boxes that can be prepaid or paid by card during the flight, subject to availability. OGG to SEA (overnight/red eye flight) - one beverage service with a pretzel packet. Then dimmed lights until we landed 7am local time. My brother who flew ahead via Hawaiian Airlines described his flight experience which was in stark contrast: generous beverage service and actual meals served - generous deli sandwiches. Alaska Airlines could do better. I remember the good ol' days flying to San Francisco, then Alaska got a bit streamlined flying to Baltimore and Milwaukee, but now even more spare with this recent experience to Maui. The flight attendants and airport staff encountered at Kahului are great. But the overall Alaska Airlines experience was kind of meh. This does not bode well for the Hawaiian Airlines merger/takeover.
