Wanted to take the wifey on a much-delayed quick mini honeymoon to early celebrate our upcoming 15th wedding anniversary! PLUS it was a great time to finally see Mom again at home! Kahului Airport (or the OGG) is still basically the same as my last visit! No frills type of airport - safely land & the payoff is the lovely view of the island of Maui...and the smell of paradise! Worth it if you ask me! Oh, and now they've got a California Pizza Kitchen too now in the terminal's food court - only one on the entire island! I don't care if the Kahului Airport hasn't been fully modernized yet to today's standards and I don't care if there's no slot machines by the gates (HA!) - I love when I fly back into this place! It indeed truly still feels like HOME to me! Stay the same, my nostalgia thanks you!

To be honest the problem was not mine but my adult daughter's. It is unfortunate that one jerk can give so many a bad reputation. All was well and then the agent checking her carry-on told her she could not take a pineapple. As I said in paragraph #1 above, this was our 5th trip in a year. We have taken Maui Gold home every time. My generally mild mannered girl said, "Bullshit, I've taken pineapples all the time." "From what airport?" asks the agent. "Right here, Kahului." "Not possible, they aren't allowed." "Let's get a supervisor." Mr. TSA relents and allows her to take the forbidden fruit. "You're a real douche" my daughter says as she walks to join us at the gate. I think Mr. TSA guy was hoping to confiscate a perfectly ripe pineapple for the family table.

I needed to go from Kahalui to Waimea and boy was this easy. Small planes, with really nice staff, from counter to pilots. Our flights were easy, quick and fun. Way too many ownership changes over the years for one to expect quality to still be in the top 5 company goals. I had multiple reservations/flights cancelled for BS reasons and then customer service was terrible every fricken time I called - no idea where the call center is, but it's crap too. The last time, they didn't even bother to process the refund I had called to request in the first place so I had to call back and burn another 30 minutes on the phone to do it all over again. Wasted more than 5 hours of my life between setting up flights with the transport of an animal between the islands and then having to request refunds because they would cancel the flights 24-36 hours in advance for one of a multitude of reasons which was different depending on who I talked to. First it was an "unscheduled maintenance", then it was "staffing", then it was "regular maintenance with no back up plane planned" and finally "weather related" and "unforeseen circumstances". And each and every time, the flights were cancelled more than 24 hours in advance...what in the actual FFF? Over and over again during the course of a week of flights, they'll happily sell you tickets on flights they just continually (planned to) cancel. STOP SELLING TICKETS if you can't actually supply the flights. Get your sh*t together or close up shop. Don't waste your time booking and just avoid the nightmare.

This review is specifically for flights in and out of Maui. This is one of the longer flights Southwest offers and you are not going to get those random cheap flights here. Cheap flights here happen in the off season. That being said, I thought what I paid was slightly too high considering the amenities that are both included and not included in the flight. As far as customer service goes, Southwest is always friendly and also funny. Flights take about 5-6 hours from LAX. Both flights I took from LAX to Maui were on the 737 MAX8 which is definitely more spacious and comfortable that the planes they use on most of their domestic flights in the main lands. We actually found it had more legroom and width of the seats. What they are missing are screens for TV or movies. What they offer is Wifi and access to movies through their app. The selections of movies, TV shows and music was decent and the app also showed flight times, altitude, etc. For a flight this long, I would think they would offer an in flight meal. That they don't, but they do offer a larger snack pack that has crackers, cheese, snack mix and fruit snacks. They also offer another light snack later in the flight. Drinks are your usual suspects but you can also pay for adult beverages as well. The lavatories are kept clean but quite tight for a bigger dude like me. I haven't taken a super long flight in awhile and this flight far exceeded my expectations.

Many rows in the back were open and they had me sitting next to an elderly couple. I had moved to an open row and they forced me to make the older couple move together so I could sit there. They're excuse is "because the plane is balanced" Before when they had open seating they only required a certain number of people to sit in the back part of plane and didn't specify where just as long as it was in the back. Probably another ploy for corporate greed so you buy your seating.

I have loved this place for all of my life, growing up with the…read moreMokulele Airlines and the 'Ohana by Hawaiian aircraft flying overhead after departing and arriving into this airport have been some of the best memories I have ever had. And I must say, although I love this airport more than most things in life, it does not cloud my judgement of the facility whatsoever. I first want to mention that this airport has changed a lot over the years, it used to be quite a bustling place with great connections to neighbor islands on several airlines. The facility was always wonderfully clean and efficient, and the services offered were plentiful, with a full TSA security screening station and the ability for passengers traveling onboard the Hawaiian Airlines service to clear TSA and check bags in Kapalua and then have them checked through to the final destination, with no need to recheck bags or go through security once you arrived in your connecting airport. There was even a snack bar and a car rental on airport property at one point. Never mind indoor restrooms and plenty of literature for tourists arriving looking for things to do. It was a great place. Then, the cuts began. The 'Ohana by Hawaiian service was wonderful, however was abruptly ended and subsequently permanently terminated in 2020, in part due to challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving Kapalua with no mainline airline service. Even Mokulele Airlines has ended many services out of the airport, such as to Kona, Kahului, Lana'i, and Moloka'i, leaving the twice daily flight to Honolulu as the only option for flying out of Kapalua. And now, that service is lacking. As the only service into Kapalua Airport, it runs quite inefficiently, sometimes flight cancellations run for weeks on end with no apparent reasons as to why. And, when flying with Mokulele, which is a wonderful company, you are unable to clear security or check bags to a final destination from Kapalua Airport, instead, you must go through security and check bags at your connecting airport. And now, thanks to the lack of service to the airport, much of it has been vacated. The absence of Hawaiian Airlines on the field has led to the closure of the popular TSA service that allowed passengers to clear security in Kapalua and be good for all of their connecting flights. And, even the snack bar is now gone, leaving no food options in the immediate vicinity of the airport. Even the rental car facility has left. And the only place you can go from this airport is now to Honolulu. And I do want to clarify, none of these cuts are the airports fault, which is why I still rate it five stars. I simply include the history to demonstrate why things are the way they are today. The facility is wonderfully clean, kept up from the marvelous maintenance team. And the staff are all very friendly, always willing to chat or just pass a smile on. It is truly a magical place. And, the airport continues to be of major importance to the West Maui communities, providing an essential cargo hub into the west side, with FedEx Feeder and FedEx Express operating flights into the airport, and serving as a substantial connecting point for the onward ground connections. Kapalua Airport is a wonderful airport, and I am confident that they will find a way to add more services and return it to its former glory once again. Aloha a hui hou, Kapalua Airport.
