If you are thinking of going here, do yourself a favor and go! The food is so, so delicious! The menu is extremely creative, making choosing what you want to eat difficult. The best way to experience the food might be to come in with friends and share a little bit of everything. I ordered the Tofu Bahn Mi and the Taro Gnocchi. I'm not a huge fan of gnocchi, in general, so I'm surprised that was my lunch choice, but I'm so happy that it was. It's hard to put into words how phenomenal it was. The seating and vibe here is casual, but chic, in a little shopping plaza off of a main road. Parking is a cinch. The employees were so friendly, welcoming, and eager to be of service. Our vegan gluten free family really loved this place. The service was top notch and made us feel right at home! Tacos were excellent (especially the salsa that came with it). Also had the taro fingers which came with a flavorful dip and our son loved them. The mushroom melt & BLAT were flavorful. The gluten free bread tasted like it was deliciously homemade. Probably what impressed us the most is as a restaurant they produce zero waste. I was seriously mind-blown at that. My family and I are visiting Maui and as long time vegans we were excited to try Moku Roots. The lady that took our order was mildly pretentious and dismissive of us when we attempted to order a few bowls to go. As new customers we did not know about the $10 deposit fee for the tin. We support zero waste initiatives however we felt as though it was a bit too steep of a mark-up and decided to go with the wraps and sandwiches in banana leaves. Unfortunately all the food lacked flavor and customer service was subpar. We will not be back. read more

This was our first time here I was impressed that they prepare all the food there, and nothing out of a can. It seemed all healthy but it wasn't to my liking. We got the sushi rito wrap, pineapple fried rice, BLAT and a brownie. Now I'm speaking for myself, but I didn't like none of it. This was some of the best food I had in Maui. We ordered take-out, and they ask you to bring your own container if you have a bowl. Awesome that they are all about zero-waste. They even wrap your food in Ti leaves and tie it with something else plant-y lol. I really enjoyed the high protein veggie sandwich and moku bowl. I enjoyed the homemade bread they use for the sandwich. The Cali burrito was good, too, but the ingredients were a little grainy for my taste - not sure if it was due to the taro or the fries. I really enjoyed our visit to Moku Roots - a 100% sustainable restaurant on Maui. I got the raw pad Thai and it was incredible. What I loved about this place is that while most vegan or vegetarian restaurants try to create fake meat alternatives (e.g., impossible patty or fake "fish" tacos), Moku Roots focuses in on developing delicious flavors using fresh veggies and fruits. The only reason that I am giving them 4 stars is that we tried the loco moku, but it wasn't super warm because it sat out for a long time (5-10min) before being served to us, which was disappointing and made it not as enjoyable. I would rather have received that first and then rest later if they couldn't be made at the same time. I recommend going for happy hour - all of the food and drinks are 20% off. read more

it has been such a blessing to visit hawaii for the first time! for my first night in maui (june 4th), I walked to Moku Roots. They are a zero-waste, vegan restaurant and their food is SUPERIOR. I got the Raw Pad Thai, shared mushroom jerk tacos, and saved the taro burger for the next day. The pad thai had a distinct flavor and didn't taste like pad thai, but nevertheless, it was worth it. It was sweet yet savory and I enjoyed every bite. The tacos were amazing as well; the texture of the mushrooms was perfect. Since you can't take most of the items to-go (only wraps, burritos, and sandwiches), I figured I could eat the taro burger later. Out of all three dishes, the taro burger was my favorite. Overall, all the dishes were phenomenal and satiating. If you're ever in maui, this place is a must try!!! read more

We were on Maui for vacation and happened to cross paths with a friend from college, so decided to meet here. I had high expectations, but this place exceeded my expectations by far! For starters, their no waste philosophy is amazing - it's easy for restaurants to say they want to be sustainable but not so easy to practice, but this place can talk the talk and walk the walk. Love the variety of dishes they use and the cloth napkins they give guests upon ordering their food. I ordered the pineapple fried rice in a pineapple and let me tell you... I am a picky eater and was kind of skeptical about the order, but one bite in and I made a loud proclamation to my table that I really loved my food. It was soooo incredibly fresh tasting, healthy, and unique. I was surprised that they offered me egg as an option for my rice since I thought the restaurant was all vegan, but I was also quite pleased by the offer. My partner ordered the fajita bowl and thought it was also quite tasty, though he was eying my pineapple fried rice. We also ordered the Thai tea which was good, but different - not nearly as sweet or creamy as what I'm used to. I didn't dislike it, but not sure I would order that again. Such a yummy casual vegetarian restaurant! If you're vegetarian be warned that there are tons of amazing options - it's a little overwhelming! I opted for their burger of the day since it featured their famed taro patty. The taro patty was wonderful, their homemade whole grain bun was also wonderful (but super dense and filling), and it also came with tons of yummy spreads - guacamole, hummus, and I'm not sure what the other one was but it was great. The onion, lettuce and tomato were fresh. Not a fan of the vegan bacon, though - the consistency was tough and the flavor was bland (maybe because the other flavors on my burger were so strong), so I picked it off. If you're super hungry, I'd recommend giving their taro burger a try. My husband got a Caesar wrap. He was very happy with it but he also said his dish was super filling. We split their fries. Omg their vegan cheese sauce is incredible!!! When I go back, I'm definitely going to scout out dishes that feature it because it's mind blowing. It also came with a tomato-based dip, which was not as memorable (not even close). The fries themselves were just ok - I don't like my potatoes to feel raw in any way and they weren't done enough to me. And note that they are not crispy like you'd expect fries to be - we didn't mind that, I just wish they were cooked more thoroughly all the way through. This dish was a pass minus the vegan cheese sauce. The restaurant is super casual. You grab your own cloth napkins, water, and silverware and clear them when finished. The woman behind the counter who took our order was super patient (again, I was overwhelmed with the so many amazing choices). I'm looking forward to returning when I visit Maui again. I'd probably opt for a salad (I saw a couple that others had ordered and they looked beautiful). Overall, this is a great spot! read more

I was looking for vegan options in Hawaii since I'm allergic to dairy and I found this. And, I'm so glad I did. It is a unicorn for every vegan out there. We tried their burger of the week Sweet & Sour "chicken" (cauliflower) burger and taro burger. Believe me, it was heaven! It is hard to think vegan food could be this flavorful. The sauces were rich and creamy, the patties were soft and ooey gooey and the bread was fresh. My only complaint would be the service. SO Happy to see this lovely place back open - and the food did not disappoint! (it never does!) I dined here on 12/15/23 for lunch (ignore the heading that says they are temp. closed - they are back open baby! (- head to their web site if you are unsure, or just call em) I had the BLAT this time - Sandwich perfection! the coconut bacon is amazing , the bread is delish, and the lettuce and tomatoes are the absolute best (can't go wrong with locally grown!) I was happy to find another vegan restaurant here on Maui. I was disappointed to know that the dish I had ordered was a shared dish and it was way too much for one person to finish. There was no way I was going to be able to finish this dish let alone make a dent In it. They did inform me when I was purchasing the food that they do not have any takeaway containers as they are a very environmentally conscious business, which I am super happy to hear about, but then found out how much food I was going to have leftover after I was served and had no way to take it with me as I was leaving on a plane back to Honolulu. I was told that they have tea leaves to wrap your to go food in or you could purchase a jar and get the refund once you return it which I would not be returning anytime soon since I live on Oahu. I wish they would've strongly advised me against purchasing that meal since it was just for myself. They were not very transparent about this, so be warned that certain dishes may be too much for you to eat and you will either have to take it in a jar (which costs more) or like what I did leave it behind. I felt I overpaid for the meal that I had. That being said, the dish I had was very tasty. I ordered the Alfredo pasta. I think that's what it's called but there was no pasta in it, which also was a disappointment but as I said it was still very tasty! My friend had a black bean soup which was about six dollars and I wish I had gotten that because that was really good and the price is right. Mine was about $15 or $16. I also got the pineapple cake which was delicious but again, could not finish it and was not able to take it with me. I wasn't about to have a tea leaf wrapped cake in my travel bags only to find it later smooshed and smeared throughout my bag. All together I paid about $30 including tip for everything I got. I did also get the Thai tea with coconut milk which was really good. Update* Maybe saying that I was overcharged is not correct. It's more that I was not informed, even after informing the girl taking my order that this was my first time here, so maybe instead of asking them to change the portion ask them to be more clear about the portion! read more

I wanted to love this place, but their staff needs some serious training! Given their poor standards I won't be back. First the good: our food was solid, well seasoned with a few standout items (coconut bacon on our salad was smoky and lovey). I also love the concept of a zero waste restaurant and it's clear they're going above and beyond most restaurants in the area. Now for the bad. I was a bit shocked at the amount of body hair and loose, flowing hair on display, totally uncovered and unbound, by the serving and kitchen staff. Ponytails bounced and lots of armpit hair peeked out from tank tops... I know Maui is a casual place, but I also witnessed a long blonde-ish hair sticking out about 6 inches from the lid of a takeout container, trapped in the lid as it was placed on the dish, the other end of the hair clearly in the food... this hair clearly matched the hair of the woman who was working the serving station wrapping food. Untied hair=hair in food and in takeout. In addition, I witnessed a server spill sauce on the floor, use a disposable napkin to wipe it up (thought the goal was to reduce waste?) then leave that dirty napkin on the serving station where food is placed by the kitchen when it's ready to go to tables or be wrapped up for takeout. Not proper sanitation practices. The server then took the small dish of dipping sauce, now mostly empty and with sauce smeared all over the side, to a table without refilling it so the customer got a full side of sauce or washing her hands at all. Finally, that dirty napkin that she used to wipe the floor with? Another server grabbed it from the service station and then used it to wipe down the outside of our to go sandwich, the logical result of dirty towels being left in the service station. I really wanted to love this place - I respect their dedication to being zero waste and using local ingredients. The food and experience were just not good. The tables were a bit sticky, with washable napkins that were frazzled and tatty. You get your own water in old mismatched plastic cups that don't seem quite clean. I get it - it's zero waste and environmentally friendly. It just felt like the little discomforts were used as statements instead of trying to improve them. All of this would have been fine if the food was good. Unfortunately we both couldn't finish our meals. I had the moku loku. My fried rice was overcooked and gluey, and the taro patty was inedible. It had a nice meaty texture at first bite but then developed into a sticky paste that stuck dryly to my teeth on chewing. Maybe it could have worked with a lot of sauce or as part of a burger, but a big dry layer across my rice was too much to get through. My wife had the bomb curry which had little flavor, and the flavor there was was bad. All that said, the presentation was very pretty and the staff were great. We've heard other people rave about this place so maybe we just ordered poorly. Regardless it was a bad experience. I think they need to work on their basics or risk putting curious diners off from local and eco-friendly eating. read more
