One of the last Mom & Pop shops still in the game should be on the National Registry of Historic Places. The place is overflowing with more than 28,000(!) VHS, DVD and Blu-ray titles of all genres (no adult titles, but that's what the internet is for, right?). Since it's my favorite, the horror section is a "can't miss" every time I come here. It's a nostalgia trip for sure, but SO much more than that thanks to the amazingly kind, knowledgeable and friendly owner who has had the place for 34 years and counting. Do yourself a favor and forget streaming and Redbox for a night, rent some discs (or tapes) and help keep this wonderland doing what it does best - be a meeting ground/living museum to film. read more

Glad to have Mokena video store near us, very nostalgic everytime we go there. Give your money to this small business rather than renting thru Comcast or other corporations The owner knows every one of his customers. . Check this gem out! read more

Highly recommend, they have every movie imaginable. Or If you are in the mood to watch an old series. The gentleman is always friendly & helpful. Has been the same owner since I was a little girl. Support local business / plus there is nothing like the hunt for a good old film. read more

Incredible local place to find a movie to watch. Fun to browse the older movies as Redbox doesn't have those. They have a great variety of genres from TV shows to music concert videos. If your going with someone it is fun to compare the selections. You can read the video case and learn more about the movie if you want. I hope they stay in business a long time as I enjoy blue-ray videos. The sound and quality of a blue-ray can be very hard to achieve streaming. Just bring the plastic quarter size chip hanging under the video to the counter and the worker will get the movie from behind the counter. Fast and efficient. Can keep movies a bunch of days as well. read more

My family and I have been customers at Mokena Video since my parents moved to Mokena in summer 1993. That was back in the VHS days and they always offered a consistently great stock of new and old movies. There have also been many times when we have been looking for a hard-to-find title and even when they didn't have it, they ordered it. We used to also rent video games from Mokena Video, as well, but I am not certain if they still offer them. Our daughter has grown out of them now. I would definitely recommend Mokena Video to anyone who lives in the vicinity, especially if you are new to Mokena. It is great to still have a reliable place who knows you by face to rent movies from instead of on-line or at a kiosk. read more

Wow, on one of my trips out to the burbs I saw this place was still in business. Talk about memory lane. I don't think they've ever gotten rid of a movie. If you want some obscure movie you saw 30 years ago, like a movie about granny turning into a zombie and trying to eat the family, they have it. Heck, they probably have it on VHS too! LOL While it's funny to think VHS, teachers need VHS format charlie brown great pumpkin movies, or what would kids watch in school for the holidays? The owner is great, and does everything the old fashioned way. He's very friendly and will talk movies with you, and makes amazing recommendations! Give them your phone number, and they'll ask if you want to pay now or when you bring it back! Just walk up to the desk and tell them what you want. I think at some point they had a system of arrangement, but it's been lost to the ages. If there was a place like this in the city I probably wouldn't use Netflix. read more

I've been going to Mokena Video ever since I was in third grade. I remember standing there waiting for the guy at the counter to come out and put the tiny yellow tags up on the little hooks under the boxes of the newest VHS releases then watching as everyone pounced to be the first to grab them. Times have changed, though. I'm older and live in the city. And VHS has been replaced with DVDs, Blurays and illegal downloads (shh...). Mokena Video, however, hasn't changed. And that is a glorious thing. Ok, enough with the nostalgia. Let's get down to business. At some point in my youth, the store got an extension or was remodeled. You'd never know when looking at it now, however. Especially from the inside. Everything there is various shades of brown, but brown nonetheless. The store consists of one thing - shelves. Many, many floor-to-ceiling shelves, all filled with DVD/VHS boxes and little plastic tags. This is the most comprehensive video store I have ever been to. They have almost anything you could ever want, and if they don't have it, chances are that they will sometime in the near future. Until then, help yourself to one of the other hundreds of movies there. I've spent countless hours wandering around this store's movie corridors After you are done perusing and have chosen a movie (warning: this may take hours), walk up to the desk where you will be often greeted by the owner. He asks for your name, phone number and if you'll be paying then or upon return. That's it. Then you walk out and enjoy. Honestly, I'm not even sure if anything but cash is accepted here, but as long as your movie isn't late when you return it, cash is all you should need. Rentals are very cheap. Unlike a Blockbuster, Mokena Video lets you borrow the film or game for a fraction of the time but for a fraction of the cost (and honestly, who needs a movie for 7 straight days?). Due to its payment system, Mokena Video's biggest flaw is that it doesn't have a drop box. You must return your rental during business hours. Bottom line is that if you are looking for a movie and you are anywhere near here, go. Especially if you are looking for something a bit older or more obscure. They'll have it. Promise. read more

As much as I love my Netflix, it doesn't get better than Mokena Video. Many speculated the fall of Mokena Video with the opening of nearby Blockbusters, but we've all seen how that's gone. This local videostore doesn't have an advertising budget, big flashing signs, nor 10,000 copies of each new release. What they do have is cheap prices, an interesting cataloging system, and the biggest selection I have ever seen. You can find nearly anything in this store. They can even dig up VHS copies of movies long since forgotten by the general public. This store was a huge part of my childhood. But, even as an adult, when out-of-town friends come to visit they always want to check out Mokena Video. Places like this just don't exist anymore. read more

BEST VIDEO STORE, EVAH!!! Yeah, it's friggin' crazy in this place. Nobody knows their "system", at times I thought I figured it out, but then the next aisle or section screws my theory up, but who cares. Prices are great, don't think I've ever walked out of there without 3 flicks. And what business anymore actually trusts their customers? Answer: Mokena Video. See, they KNOW they got the best thing in town, and you'll be back. read more

The best video store I have been to. Super friendly guy. Very generous and has a ton of older and more obscure movies and VHS from every category. Great place and a throw back to the good old times. He has all the new releases and gets movies if you ask him for them. 5 out of 5 all the way. read more

Just good people. Huge movie selection with blu Ray and normal def. Beyond usual customer service! read more

I have to come clean, I have been checking out mature films under the name of fellow Yelper Ryan W. from Chicago and never returning them. You see, since the dawn of time, Mokena Video has used the old "round tag on the movie and just write your name on this card and bring it back later" trick. It's basically a free for all. Take whatever you want, it's all free... read more

I can't picture Mokena without it's awesome movie store: Mokena Video. I can remember going there ever since I was a little kid, my parents having me pick out some movies for the weekend. Even in high school I would go there to visit my friend Danielle while she was working and pick out some rentals. The renting price is excellent and the selection there is HUGE. They have both the newest movies as well as the older classics, any movie you can think of, it'll probably be at Mokena Video! They also have a pretty good video game selection. I have lived in Mokena my whole life and Mokena Video has ways been around and it is a great place to go if you're looking to rent some great movies. Way better selection than Netflix in my opinion. read more

I love this mom and pa place! The selection is amazing, they have just about everything...and you can not beat their pricing. As for no drop box, it does suck...but that just shows how lazy the American people are! If you can not walk in to drop off a movie...you need some help! This place is a great place to get a movie! Great service, selection, and prices makes it #1 on my list. Not to mention, it brings me back to my childhood with the tags and no computers! read more

a triumphant testimony to Mokena Illinois. Practically the ONLY thing that town has going for it. The best, most complete video store i have ever been to. equally excellent for video games as well. I frequented this place the entire time i lived in mokena (15 years) and they've always been the best for selection, their prices have always edged out blockbuster and other chains, and the owners and staff will treat you like a person, not a customer. truly a diamond in the rough. read more

We love this place so much. Walking in here is like going into a time machine and coming out in 1986. There is NOTHING you cannot find here. They have everything. This is old time video store, family business. the owner knows where everything is and is super friendly and helpful. He can tell you off the top of his head which movies he has and knows exactly where they are (and that's a feat...that place is a maze). I really love it. I homeschool and he has a TON of educational videos...just everything. The selection can't be beat! Redbox is crap. That stupid box only has new movies and let's face it, they're mostly terrible. Mokena Video has every classic you can think of from Cary Grant to Brat Pack favorites. You can't go wrong here. Check it out! It's an experience read more

I love this place!!! They have literally EVERYTHING. I took a film class and they had every single movie I needed from a Charlie Chaplin film to present day stuff. Keep your money where your house is, BUY AND SHOP LOCAL read more

The BEST video rental store (I'm including the non brick and mortar stores in this too) hands down!! The selection is HUGE, prices are GREAT and the service is sooo FRIENDLY. They probably have anything and I do mean anything that you could possibly want to rent in their video selection library. Just ask them if you can't find or figure out their crazy display system. read more

If you at all enjoy movies or video games, this place is where it's at. The selection simply can't be beat, the prices are very reasonable, and you get friendly, face-to-face service to top it off. The owner states he has 22,000 titles in his inventory, and I'd believe him in a heartbeat. One could literally spent hours here perusing the collection. On the slim, off-chance he doesn't have what you're looking for, he has been known to specially order rarer flicks. Mokena Video: Good times!! read more

Simply put, the best place for movies, especially for horror. They have many hard to find, and even include some local productions. I go there as often as possible. read more

I've looked and there is seriously no place like it anywhere else in the Chicago area. I can't tell you how many times I've mentioned some amazing independent film to a friend and realized they can only get it from somewhere like Mokena Video. It's honestly worth a 30 minute ride on the Metra from the city just to stock up on some good films. The owners are awesome and incredibly knowledgeable. Even if it appears they're out of something, just ask and they'll likely make a trip to their basement - to return with exactly what you asked for. This place is the best. read more

Was getting tired of the same movies on Netflix, Comcast and Amazon. I grew up going to Mokena video and popped in the other day after many years away. So much more selection and fun to look around. Reasonable prices and the owner is so nice. Much nicer and understanding the a red box. I think it is important to shop local!!! Going to be our "new" place to rent movies and games. Also cool we can rent old VHS tapes!!! read more

HUGE selection, prices cheaper than the competition (other than redbox that holds only maybe a few hundred titles), and very friendly service. Try them out, you will like it! BTW, the suggestion for a drop-box is well-taken! read more

I have been going to Mokena Video since I was a little girl, I have always loved browsing the seemingly endless selection here. The man who owns Mokena video always gives me amazing suggestions for movies, he has great taste. I would be extremely upset if Mokena Video ever went out of business like we've seen other video stores do. read more

The owner of this store puts his heart and soul into his business. If I'm a couple days late returning a video, he let's it slide. I've been coming here since I've lived in Mokena, and there's never a shortage of movies on the shelves. I always find what I've came for and then some. Sometimes I even chat with the owner because he is just so friendly.. I recommend coming here for great throwback flicks and new releases. 5/5 read more

This place has everything and looks about the size of a basketball court. They use pen and paper for rentals!!! Love that old school approach. They have every movie I've ever heard of and still carry some VHS copies. Cool. New and classic, movie or video game, the place is always buzzing. No drop box but hey, nobody's perfect. Cost is great too. read more

You cant not love this place. Every movie you can think of. The owner goes out of his way to accommodate you . My kids love it here. Beats any redbox or netflix. read more

Mokena video provides me with hours of entertainment since I have stopped working. Much of it in store. They have the most bizarre cataloging system for their movies. Its not alphabetical, it's not by genre, it's not chronological. I have yet to figure out their system and honestly I don't want to. It's more more amusing wandering the aisles trying to figure out why Die Hard is next to The Rock which is one shelf above When Harry Met Sally. But they have awesome 3-2-1 pricing where the first movie is three bucks, second is two bucks and so on. They also have an honor system where you can pay when you return. I imagine the lack of drop box, limited new releases and bizarre way of organizing could be annoying to some. I personally am a customer for life. read more

Agree with Michael P., the only reason I don't go there is there is no drop box for returning after hours, you have to park and walk all the way to the front counter. read more

Favorite place to go!!! Been living in Mokena most of my life, has the best selection, friendliest people, great prices. I recently moved away and I have yet to find a store like it. Every time I go home its my first trip in! It's the best, so happy to see its survived all these years! Definitely a staple of Mokena! read more

They switched to a 3-2-2 deal ($7 for any three movies) which is still a great deal since On-Demand for new movies can be $4.99, or more for HD. You can pick any movie, DVD or Blu-Ray and it is still the same price. The employee let me keep one of the movies for an extra day when I told him I probably wouldn't have time to watch three movies in three days. What a nice guy. The place takes you back in time. There IS an organization to the movies. I had a delightful time browsing and there is also a cat that wanders the place. read more

This is a diamond in the ruff. People are so friendly, and the selection is amazing. You can take your time and read about the movies and not be rushed by anyone standing behind you. There is a huge selection of new releases and old movies too. You can ask the workers about any movie and they have it. Its selection is crazy. You have to stop by and see for yourself. You wont be disappointed. read more
