One of the last Mom & Pop shops still in the game should be on the National Registry of Historic Places. The place is overflowing with more than 28,000(!) VHS, DVD and Blu-ray titles of all genres (no adult titles, but that's what the internet is for, right?). Since it's my favorite, the horror section is a "can't miss" every time I come here. It's a nostalgia trip for sure, but SO much more than that thanks to the amazingly kind, knowledgeable and friendly owner who has had the place for 34 years and counting. Do yourself a favor and forget streaming and Redbox for a night, rent some discs (or tapes) and help keep this wonderland doing what it does best - be a meeting ground/living museum to film. read more

Incredible local place to find a movie to watch. Fun to browse the older movies as Redbox doesn't have those. They have a great variety of genres from TV shows to music concert videos. If your going with someone it is fun to compare the selections. You can read the video case and learn more about the movie if you want. I hope they stay in business a long time as I enjoy blue-ray videos. The sound and quality of a blue-ray can be very hard to achieve streaming. Just bring the plastic quarter size chip hanging under the video to the counter and the worker will get the movie from behind the counter. Fast and efficient. My family and I have been customers at Mokena Video since my parents moved to Mokena in summer 1993. That was back in the VHS days and they always offered a consistently great stock of new and old movies. There have also been many times when we have been looking for a hard-to-find title and even when they didn't have it, they ordered it. We used to also rent video games from Mokena Video, as well, but I am not certain if they still offer them. Our daughter has grown out of them now. I would definitely recommend Mokena Video to anyone who lives in the vicinity, especially if you are new to Mokena. Wow, on one of my trips out to the burbs I saw this place was still in business. Talk about memory lane. I don't think they've ever gotten rid of a movie. If you want some obscure movie you saw 30 years ago, like a movie about granny turning into a zombie and trying to eat the family, they have it. Heck, they probably have it on VHS too! LOL While it's funny to think VHS, teachers need VHS format charlie brown great pumpkin movies, or what would kids watch in school for the holidays? The owner is great, and does everything the old fashioned way. He's very friendly and will talk movies with you, and makes amazing recommendations! Give them your phone number, and they'll ask if you want to pay now or when you bring it back! Just walk up to the desk and tell them what you want. I think at some point they had a system of arrangement, but it's been lost to the ages. If there was a place like this in the city I probably wouldn't use Netflix. read more

I've been going to Mokena Video ever since I was in third grade. I remember standing there waiting for the guy at the counter to come out and put the tiny yellow tags up on the little hooks under the boxes of the newest VHS releases then watching as everyone pounced to be the first to grab them. Times have changed, though. I'm older and live in the city. And VHS has been replaced with DVDs, Blurays and illegal downloads (shh...). Mokena Video, however, hasn't changed. And that is a glorious thing. Ok, enough with the nostalgia. Let's get down to business. At some point in my youth, the store got an extension or was remodeled. You'd never know when looking at it now, however. Especially from the inside. Everything there is various shades of brown, but brown nonetheless. The store consists of one thing - shelves. Many, many floor-to-ceiling shelves, all filled with DVD/VHS boxes and little plastic tags. This is the most comprehensive video store I have ever been to. They have almost anything you could ever want, and if they don't have it, chances are that they will sometime in the near future. Until then, help yourself to one of the other hundreds of movies there. I've spent countless hours wandering around this store's movie corridors After you are done perusing and have chosen a movie (warning: this may take hours), walk up to the desk where you will be often greeted by the owner. He asks for your name, phone number and if you'll be paying then or upon return. That's it. Then you walk out and enjoy. Honestly, I'm not even sure if anything but cash is accepted here, but as long as your movie isn't late when you return it, cash is all you should need. Rentals are very cheap. Unlike a Blockbuster, Mokena Video lets you borrow the film or game for a fraction of the time but for a fraction of the cost (and honestly, who needs a movie for 7 straight days?). Due to its payment system, Mokena Video's biggest flaw is that it doesn't have a drop box. You must return your rental during business hours. Bottom line is that if you are looking for a movie and you are anywhere near here, go. Especially if you are looking for something a bit older or more obscure. They'll have it. Promise. read more

As much as I love my Netflix, it doesn't get better than Mokena Video. Many speculated the fall of Mokena Video with the opening of nearby Blockbusters, but we've all seen how that's gone. This local videostore doesn't have an advertising budget, big flashing signs, nor 10,000 copies of each new release. What they do have is cheap prices, an interesting cataloging system, and the biggest selection I have ever seen. You can find nearly anything in this store. They can even dig up VHS copies of movies long since forgotten by the general public. This store was a huge part of my childhood. But, even as an adult, when out-of-town friends come to visit they always want to check out Mokena Video. Places like this just don't exist anymore. read more

I can't picture Mokena without it's awesome movie store: Mokena Video. I can remember going there ever since I was a little kid, my parents having me pick out some movies for the weekend. Even in high school I would go there to visit my friend Danielle while she was working and pick out some rentals. The renting price is excellent and the selection there is HUGE. They have both the newest movies as well as the older classics, any movie you can think of, it'll probably be at Mokena Video! They also have a pretty good video game selection. I have lived in Mokena my whole life and Mokena Video has ways been around and it is a great place to go if you're looking to rent some great movies. Was getting tired of the same movies on Netflix, Comcast and Amazon. I grew up going to Mokena video and popped in the other day after many years away. So much more selection and fun to look around. I've looked and there is seriously no place like it anywhere else in the Chicago area. I can't tell you how many times I've mentioned some amazing independent film to a friend and realized they can only get it from somewhere like Mokena Video. It's honestly worth a 30 minute ride on the Metra from the city just to stock up on some good films. The owners are awesome and incredibly knowledgeable. This place has everything and looks about the size of a basketball court. They use pen and paper for rentals!!! Love that old school approach. They have every movie I've ever heard of and still carry some VHS copies. Cool. New and classic, movie or video game, the place is always buzzing. No drop box but hey, nobody's perfect. Mokena video provides me with hours of entertainment since I have stopped working. Much of it in store. They have the most bizarre cataloging system for their movies. Its not alphabetical, it's not by genre, it's not chronological. I have yet to figure out their system and honestly I don't want to. It's more more amusing wandering the aisles trying to figure out why Die Hard is next to The Rock which is one shelf above When Harry Met Sally. But they have awesome 3-2-1 pricing where the first movie is three bucks, second is two bucks and so on. They also have an honor system where you can pay when you return. I imagine the lack of drop box, limited new releases and bizarre way of organizing could be annoying to some. I personally am a customer for life. read more

They switched to a 3-2-2 deal ($7 for any three movies) which is still a great deal since On-Demand for new movies can be $4.99, or more for HD. You can pick any movie, DVD or Blu-Ray and it is still the same price. The employee let me keep one of the movies for an extra day when I told him I probably wouldn't have time to watch three movies in three days. What a nice guy. The place takes you back in time. There IS an organization to the movies. I had a delightful time browsing and there is also a cat that wanders the place. read more
