Wow, what an odd little place! It is located amongst an industrial precinct in Lonsdale, and is an…read moreunexpected gem. We originally visited here as part of the Rendezvous markets, but that has unfortunately now closed. The upside is that Crossant D'Or Bakery has now decided to open every Saturday, which is great if you're looking for cheap pastries and coffee ;) My favourite is the almond croissant - full size for only $1!! That is not a typo - it's really $1. We also love the tray of 12 mini croissants (6 almond and 6 chocolate) for only $6, and a bonus is the good coffee (not sure if they stock soy milk - I had a very good long black). Croissant D'Or supplies cafes and the Central Markets, so is not really set up to be a stand-alone cafe - this is why the produce is so cheap, and why the seating is a bit daggy. It's a shame the Rendezvous Markets weren't sustainable, but I think this is because they concentrated more on the produce itself rather than the ambience ... and although this sounds shallow, ambience is a very important in making these sorts of markets popular. All in all, I think we will be frequenting Croissant D'Or quite regularly ... good for my wallet, but not necessarily for my waistline ;)

Who would've thunk it? A real life French patisserie in the middle of an industrial estate! Then…read moreagain, Croissant D'Or Bakery is more of a 'working bakery' than high-end patisserie cafe, with the majority of their product ending up at local eating establishments. And probably being sold on for some considerable mark-up. This is one of these hidden jewels of the south, where you can grab a delectably flaky almond pastry and creamy latte for a fraction of what it will cost you at one of your more fancy establishments. It's worth seeking out this place early on a Saturday morning if only to grab a $6 tray chock full of croissant-y goodies; plain, chocolate and almond. And of course, you need to get one to eat then and there as well! The only downfall of this place (besides it's slightly difficult to get to location), is the general atmos. As I mentioned before, this is a working bakery set on an industrial estate. There are seats outside, but they are few and far between. The view is of the surrounding warehouses, with some old cracked cement pots with a few token plants for greenery. The music is also of some questionable taste at time - you'll have a few charming Parisian cafe tunes, but then mysteriously Zamfir will suddenly bust some panpipe moves. You can't help but think that with a little more careful planning, some more care taken with the outside decor and keeping up with the oh-so-French-chic musique that this bakery could become a real trendy hit with the Southerners. However, until then, I will continue to go for the amazing pastries, great coffee and friendly service. It's worth the trip through the sea of industry, for the best croissants in town. (Probably the same one you've just bout for triple the price at your local cafe!)

Situated right at the…read moreentrance to the mall, this coffee shop is decked out with funky furniture, cool decorations and outdoor seating for the nicer summer months. I have ordered a iced chocolate twice from there. On both occasions, they came out perfectly presented with chocolate powder and whipped cream layered on top. Unlike other coffee shops, the iced chocolate didn't taste like it was made from cheap chocolate powder. It actually tasted like it was made with something much nicer. They also can use skim milk, which I find much nicer than the full cream variety. The little shop can get quite busy from time to time, however if you pick your timing nicely, it can be nice and quiet. It generally isn't too noisy in there too, which is always good for when you are having a conversation. They also have a nice range of cakes, sandwiches and croissants - the typical coffee shop offerings. I have my eye on a particular slice of cake they have on offer which I am interested in trying next time I am there. Pricing is on par with other establishments and the staff are good. The wait time is good too, but varies (as you would assume) depending on the number of people in the cafe.

I'm afraid that a super-long wait for a fairly basic meal last Friday night has made me downgrade them slightly to 4 stars. I think what has happened is that they are super busy, but just don't have the staff to cope with the orders. The staff who are there are lovely - but they need at least one more in the kitchen, and another on the floor. Oh, and they obviously need a larger pizza oven! What worries me is that they have spent a lot of money on upgrading the verandah area, and have also renovated upstairs - how can they service these extra people??? PS - a very long wait for food with a grumpy 6 year old when the temperatures are soaring outside is not very fun :P

Growing up in the area the building has never been used to its full potential until now, previously having been a deli and empty for some time prior. The inside and deck area are at a super high standard reminding me of renovated pubs like the Hilton and Highway in style, clean and modern. Whilst the deck is closed it's dog friendly to our suprise! Now onto the food and drink... They weren't messing with us when it came to portion sizes with the large coffees being just that for once! Yes FINALLY! The burgers were fantastic and both under $15, though we were devastated we missed the breakfast deadline of 11.30. I had the quinoa and kindey bean burger and it was delicious, the service was great and I can't find fault on this place. Brilliant and worth a trip to the area for the adjoining nature walk as well

I was so astonished and mind-blown by the arrays of magnificent-looking choices I only bought a vanilla slice because my head was spinning. It was utterly wonderful, so the next day I went back, bought a gluten-free chocolate brownie because it was the only choccy brownie I saw, and a chocolate croissant. Snarfed the entire croissant that evening figuring the brownie would last better in the fridge. Today, after almost 24 hours and cold from its brown bag in the fridge, it's still got to be the chocolatiest, richest, tastiest brownie I've had in many a long year (& I'm a lot closer to 80 than the last time I had any shop-bought baked treat this wonderful.) Not much to say about the ambiance because such impressive baked goods outshone everything else, though the interior did seem as clean, bright and shiny as it should be and the service was cheerful, prompt and helpful especially given how busy they were in waves. I was also tickled to see the treats for littlies, from tiny rainbows with clouds at both ends, to unicorns to a Minion an adult fan I know would love. I do expect to get to try their meat pies as well, but again, haven't yet been able to make up my mind which to try first. This review is only "pretty epic" because the bakery is!
