I am sad to give this review, but after my bad experience and talking to the owner , it got worse. I do not recommend coming here for the "salon experience" where you expect to feel taken care of and to walk out feeling cute! I booked a hair cut for today with Stephanie, the salon owner. My booking said the hair cut would be $80-150. I arrived at 11:20 when my appointment was at 11:30, and she was finishing her client still. No problem! She got to me on time and did our consultation before washing my hair. The haircut was fine as I expected. As a cosmetology student, I have been following & admiring her work on instagram for about a year. What I noticed was she didn't drape me for a wash, her tools came out of a bag so I can't be sure they were disinfected, and there was hair on my chair from the previous blonde client 5 minutes before me. I was so excited to get the layered shaggy cut of my dreams. Besides cleanliness, the issue came to styling & professionalism. She was rushed because as I would come to find out, her next client was at 12:30. This leaves literally no time between clients to properly clean and disinfect your station and tools...Anyways, I have coarse, dry, textured hair. This was not taken into account when she used high heat to diffuse my hair, very little curl cream product, and no heat protectant. I'm not dumb, I know this is to save time and $ on product. To say the least, my hair came out frizzy, not completely dry, and so poofy I wanted to cry. In fact I did in the parking lot lol. When she asked if I liked it, I was polite and honest and said i didn't like the styling and it was really frizzy and dry. I could sense she was offended. She offered a serum but I knew it wouldn't help my curls form at this point bc they were just blasted with heat to get me out of that chair quickly enough for her next client. I paid $155 plus $23 to tip. I was confused about this because I left with frizzy , not Completely dry hair... so i didn't know why it was at the highest price possible. I called hoping to get this resolved because I truly felt ugly after my cut and disappointed with my experience/ the fact that I spent that much on something that made me feel horrible. However when I called, she dismissed my problems, assured me that the online booking system told me how my hair cuts were with her specifically, but they didn't as you can see in the photos I attached. She kept interrupting when I voiced my concerns so I hung up after wishing her a nice day since she didn't want to hear my concerns or constructive criticism. I do believe she laughed at me over the phone but I'm not sure. I hope not. Please don't come here if you want to have a self care day or if you have wavy or curly hair. Save your money! **Editing this review to update y'all that stephanie left me a very long and condescending voicemail after I left this review. She mentions she doesn't understand the point of me leaving a review and that she doesn't know what i want from her... Any sort of suggestion/ resolution/ apology would have helped loads when I initially called her lol. She also offered to help me in my career and talk about this , but it came across very condescending, especially since I had the worst experience I've ever had at a salon coming here... Also I noticed my hair cut was butchered and done pretty lazily so I will sadly have to pay to get it fixed once my awful fringe grow out. read more

Where has this salon been all my life?! From start to finish, my experience was a total 10/10. Steph was so welcoming, and an amazing stylist. 10/10. Today was my first appointment. I left with the cut and style I had hoped for but it was better than I imagined. I had been insta stalking Stephanie & Modest Spot for a year. I was looking for a change, I brought inspo pics. She listened and we discussed what I was going for and my hair habits ( good and bad ). Stephanie was super kind & authentic. The salon is intimate and beach dreamy, not pretentious. It's worth the drive down to San Clemente. read more

I have been following Stephanie's work for awhile and have been such a fan of her artistry. I was finally able to make an appointment and she and her beautiful salon exceeded my expectations. It is a cozy and welcoming space, but more importantly, Stephanie is an incredible and kind hairstylist who gave me the best color and cut I have had in forever. She has gained a lifetime client and I am beyond thrilled to have found her and the salon. I cannot recommend her enough!! read more

Been searching high and low for years for a stylist who can listen to what I wish my hair to look like and execute it well. Don't get me wrong, I've been to other stylists previously who did good work. But Stephanie is on another level. She is an artist. She took my long hair, and gave it shape without making it so that I'll need an army of stylists to make it look good. It's everyday lived in hair. I've gone to her twice now and I plan to go back to her again every couple of months to maintain my hair's shape and style. I have never really stuck to one stylist but now I've found the one! Super happy to have found Stephanie and plan to support her for a long time. read more

Stevi is the best! I highlight my hair every six months or so, so I want something that looks natural as it grows out. Stevi nails it every single time. I travel from San Diego to have her do my hair. If you are looking for beachy blonde hair, she is the best. The salon itself is great as well. It is super cute and close to the main strip in San Clemente read more

Love this place! This was my first time here and was recommended by a friend who just got an awesome color and cut by owner Stephanie. The salon is beautiful boho while also relaxed and comfortable. They offer you champagne the minute you walk in and keep it flowing :) My roots were grey and a mess from Box dyes. I have dyed red copper hair and Stephanie fixed my roots made them a beautiful dark red and then glazed the rest of my hair to keep the lighter copper so it created a balayage effect. She also did fringe / bangs and layered my hair. There are not many people that can do fringe well but she did! Highly recommend! read more

Stephanie Carrillo. She is a pleasure to be with who truly loves her craft and her precision cuts are amazing. Her love for her job and the clients well being, experience, expectations are above and beyond. Honestly, the best stylist I've been to and I've been to a lot! The one good thing about Quarantine is I was forced to grow my hair out and get a new look. I was wanting a Shag and found Stephanie a beautiful, nicest woman in downtown San Clemente who is in the top 25 finalist out of 3,000 for best Shag haircut. Who knew! This style lets me easily embrace my natural curl with minimal heat damage. No more hot blow dryers, flat iron or curling iron. No more damage. All natural products. I'm so glad I found her! I'm still growing it to get that Stevie look (also my stylist fave celebrity person) I'm so happy with my hair!! Now to lose my COVID-19 pounds. read more

First off. I want to say that I loved my experience here and loved the owner. I thought we totally bonded. I also loved my hair color and cut. But in the days and weeks that followed I got the feeling that either A. I'm not attractive enough or B. She didn't like what we did to my hair because as I excitedly waited to see my photos get posted - they never were. Not on Yelp or IG. And it made me really self conscious. I had another appointment set up and cancelled because I thought I don't want to go somewhere where maybe they just weren't feeling what I was asking for. Or maybe I needed to look more hip. I don't know. But I got lots of compliments on my hair so I think it was good :) read more

I have been going to Modest Spot Salon for 6 plus years and always have the best experiences. I'm someone who gets bored with my color and likes to change it up from light to dark almost every year so thankful for Stephanie because even when I'm not even sure what I want done or the exact color I want she always perfects it in a way I couldn't even imagine. She is a balayage specialist (PRO) and I couldn't ever imagine anyone getting it right like Stephanie does every time! Not only does my hair always look amazing, it's always fun conversation, and such a relaxing vibe. The salon is absolutely beautiful and so is everyone there read more

Steph is so amazing! I would never go anywhere else. The salon name is completely appropriate for this off the main street, quaint ( |kwnt|, adjective: attractively unusual) salon. Modest for its two seat salon and location, but not lacking character, quality, or professionalism. The style is modern vintage and completely correlating with this generation. I have had my hair cut from the owner for about two years, and it is always so amazing I don't want to get it cut again. But the next cut never fails to exceed the previous one. I always get complimented on the style and coloring. Whether you want something completely new, unusual or stick with a cut that suits your fancy, Modest salon stylists will give you one with distinctive quality. Feeling adventurous? Let her have free reign and you will get a fresh, hip look because her style is impeccable and oh so cool. Oh the coloring. Perfection. Appeal. And Lovely. I have had over 5 people do coloring and highlights in my hair over the last ten years and no one even comes close to the fantastic tones I have right now. She uses all types of technique and can do basically anything. To find this class of service in little San Clemente is so so so wonderful. SO Seriously try Modest spot salon out. But beware you will never want to go anywhere else ever again! I know everyone wants to hear something negative: well its pricey... but so worth it. Check it. P.S. always offered a drink, fun featherlocks (so cool get with the trend!), and makeup services available. read more

This salon is like a small Shangri-la. I had met Danyell elsewhere, and admired her cute haircut. She kindly gave me her info, and I got my hair cut. I have never had a cut that was so cute...and fit my personality. (I have had a lot of haircuts in my life, but I realize I was surely getting the one-size-fits-all one.) I stopped in the other day, and the ladies greeted me so warmly, and they were so kind...this is a really, really hip salon. But no attitude, but kindness! You ladies are the best! read more

This place don't even deserve an one star! First of all, I'm very happy with my highlights and color, but after fucking up so bad, it doesn't matter how good the color was when everything else was a fucking nightmare. The hairdresser only high lighted my top head and not my under hair. But after telling her that I wanna HIGHLIGHT MY "WHOLE" head, she did the full head the way it was suppose to be. I also have 21 inch Indian hair tape extension that cost me $400 2 months ago, so it was time to lift them up additional to highlight my roots. She also didn't remove the old tape proper enough, so some of my extension are thick as a sandwich, since they have the old layer of tape additional to the new one. So after 4 hours in the chair, it was time for the last finish and cut my dry ends. I said 2 inches max 3 and I also stood up from the chair and showed her specifictly where she should cut it. 5 inch later and $370 poorer, I left the salon crying and all upset. Funny thing is I asked how much it would be before I booked an appointment over phone and they told me $90 for highlights and $150 for extension service. But highlights become $150 and additional to this they were rude enough to charge me $70 for the fucking disaster haircut. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Laguna and other spots who do the extension service always have the haircut of extension after lifting included. My whole day was ruin, and my 21 inch extension for $400 suddently become 15-16 inch. I try to call after with no luck, and emailed them about the problem and wanted my money back. Or at least them pay for the extension or come up with a solution so I could have the length I requested. They told me ironically that they saved my hair (what the fuck?!) and it was only 2 inches and wasn't cooperating at all to find a solution, so I ended up just having the ridiculous $70 for the haircut refunded. I got a pair of tape extension left at home which I lost and didn't bring, and I can tell and so can my friends that there was definitely not 2 inches they are defending themselves with, but 5. Thank God San Clemente is a small town, I'll never ever visit this place again and so won't my friends. Thanks for ruin my $400 extension and my trip to Brazil the following day after. The whole point having my tape extension on are now just a fucking joke!! So total this shit place made me $700 (it was $770 before the little refund) poorer since I now (or if I want longer hair than my own length) need to buy another 21 inch full head tape extension. Words can't describe my anger and sadness about all the money I lost and the pain in the ass for having 15/16 inch like my real hair again. Thanks again for making all girls worst nightmare real!! read more
