I've taken a few months to wait and write this because I wasn't sure if I was overreacting or not. I've been to this salon twice, and my hair cuts have been fine. My curls are wavy than coily and they always have the assistant do a full style and they seem to love to scrunch and coil. That's fine; that's their thing. The problem I had was this last visit, Vicky talked about politics. I was shocked and I didn't know what to say and just said something like, "Oh yeah, I heard about that" and then I think she thought my comment meant I agreed with her and she said another thing that made me really uncomfortable. I was so surprised that she went down that road at all that I didn't have a good response, I just sat there frozen. I wasn't prepared and I just wanted to say the perfect thing to stand up for what I believe in while at the same time not talk about politics at all at my expensive haircut, and I've thought about it so many times since then and wish I had just said, "I see things a little bit differently" or even, "I don't want to talk about politics." Maybe that would have stopped her, maybe not. She's the owner and she can say what she wants. But I won't be back. It wasn't the relaxing self-care moment I'd been hoping for. read more

I had long, beautiful hair. I'm the type of the girl that does a hair mask every Sunday, drinks collagen every morning, and treats my hair like a prize. I would compliments daily on how beautiful my hair was because I put so much work into it. It pains my heart now to look in the mirror at what they did it me. RUN FAR AWAY FROM THIS STUDIO. Curls on top is a curly hair studio in the heart of Laguna Beach. I just moved to the area, so I was obviously nervous about finding a new salon with how much I care about my hair and my branch wavy texture. A lot of studios isn't the area treat hair like a luxury experience, where here I felt rushed, unwanted, and like a another number to get through. So already I was a bad experience. When it came time to the cut, they cut off FOUR INCHES OF HAIR. I would attach a picture but honestly I'm so embarrassed by how I now look. As curly girls know, curly hair takes even longer to grow out since it is textured. It broke my heart but the damage was done. It will a lot of ponytails for the next year. I'm so sad as someone who used to have hair was my best feature. Beyond upset and disappointed. Please listen to this warning and not go here. read more

Called to make an appointment for my daughter and was refused service. Age limit is 10 my daughter is 8. Her hair texture is fine wavy, curly. I was turned away for a hair cut for my daughter because they told me it hurts the kids to get their hair picked out. My child is a kid with curly hair we are constantly picking out knots. She is also extremely used to having her hair styled for photo shoots and dance recitals. They lady was not very friendly on the phone either. I was calling to get a nice trim and advice on how to get the maximum curls for auditions for my daughter and will be finding a new place to go. Anasa Hair Studio. She is amazing and way less expensive then curls on top. She hands done hair on major sit coms. She is worth the drive to Temecula! This review is long overdue. I came in to curl on top with virgin hair. I asked to get a curly haircut along with soft Carmel highlights (the image below is the reference photo I gave). The hairstylist told me we could get to what I wanted color wise, without needing bleach. My number one mistake was trusting her. After the hair cut when it was time to put in the highlights she added the lightening color to my hair then placed toilet paper to separate the sections and laid Saran Wrap across my hair. After she diffused my hair it was obvious the color had bleed through my entire hair and left me with blocky highlights at the root and different colors all over my hair. She was going to let me leave with it like that ! Gaslighting me into thinking it looked good. I told her I'd did not like it and she added a few touches of black die to the top of my hair. She knocked off half the price and I paid and left very unsatisfied and distraught. When I got home however and actually got time to look at my hair I saw the true damage. Coincidentally, she never let me look at the back of my head. I called the next day, and one of the only good things that came out of this whole situation is that I received a full refund. Unfortunately I ended up needing to spend a lot of money on a color correction and a haircut. I am now forced to go back to a salon and receive services on my hair every 4 to 5 months now because of the damage that the salon has caused. read more

Update: In response to Vickie's comment: Vicky, you claimed to have the 6 week coughing flu. You kept repeating how it lasts for 6 whole weeks!!! You claimed to be on the 3rd or 4th week of 6. About 3 other employees chimed in that they had also gotten sick! And of course, you didn't even acknowledge how you mistreat minorities. You probably do it on purpose so that they don't come back. That's why you're so "elated that I won't be returning"! Vicky refused to use hand sanitizer, a face mask, cough in the other direction, or her sleeve; even after I repeatedly asked that she cover her mouth, and voiced concern over getting sick! She purposefully coughed on me, all over my head and face; all while bragging how she's half way through the 6 week coughing flu!!!! ********************************************************************************** This place should be under quarantine! The owner Vickie had that 6 week coughing virus (she confirmed that's what she had) and kept coughing all over her clients, without once disinfecting her hands or trying to cover her mouth! She claimed to not be contagious but her co-workers all claimed to also have gotten the same sickness!! Now I feel my own throat getting sore and scratchy! She coughed into her hands then touched my head/hair right after without disinfecting herself or even attempting to cover her mouth. She coughed directly onto my head, hair, and face! No hand sanitizer or tissue anywhere in the shop! Didn't even try to use her arm or sleeve instead of her hands or coughing in the other direction, she was just there openly coughing right into people's faces! Vickie the owner has cut my hair a couple of times now. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt but each time she has proven to be very assumptive and insulting. The price of the cut is pretty expensive too so I would expect a more high end feel but that's not what you get. She's very opinionated; and if you don't answer how she expects, she'll make you feel bad. She also gave me a horrible cut. The first two visits I had a trim where she followed the style I already had. This time, I had her do an actual cut. She promised that she hated the book shelf look and would cut my hair to the look I already had/described, but she butchered my hair! It definitely looks like a book shelf, where all the volume is at the bottom, she cut my hair in a straight line rather than keeping the shape i wanted, and she cut the MAXIMUM amount of hair I wanted and left NO room to correct mistakes. I'm sick, with that cough now, and stuck with an awful hair cut. Oh and she made a comment about how they tell African American girls to come in with their differently because they don't know how to detangle it!?! Never coming back! read more

The cost for a cut at curls on top was very high for me, nearly two bills! That's up considerably from last year. (BTW, I have a small amount of hair. I had split ends, but who doesn't?!) I'm chasing a look of perfect curls by using up lots of money on haircuts and special curly hair products. It's anxiety generating. To get relief here something has to change. They're nice pleasant people who do a good job getting curls to behave and stay put in their salon. They put in a lot of effort to get my hair to look great and it lasts for days. It's something I can't achieve at home. As nice as it is to get that perfect curls look a couple times a year, at this point, I have to find a less expensive hair cut option. read more

I've bounced around curly cut stylists since moving to OC. They're all great stylists, but the cut I just got by Lauren at Curls On Top has been the absolute best I've ever gotten. Although I could tell they really know their stuff about curly hair and my hair definitely looked much more hydrated and defined after my visit there, I was unimpressed with how I was treated while there. I felt like an afterthought. I think this is probably because they overbooked themselves. I understand why they book so many appointments a day (they are the probably the only good curly hair salon for miles), but I felt under-served while there because of it. It was a disappointing experience because of how much I anticipated the visit and how much I paid for it. If I'm ever in the area again and in need of a haircut, I will probably come back, but I do hope they are able to improve in this aspect. read more

It's been 6 months since I've let my hair go natural (no straightening or heat of any kind, and products with no silicones or sulfates) and I went to Curls on Top July 2016 to kickstart my journey. I recently went a second time because the stylists tell you that for natural curly hair, you only need 2 trims a year! I used to straighten my hair daily for years, so my hair had tons of damage. 6 months and two trims later, the damage has grown out or been trimmed off, and my hair is nourished and hydrated from using botanical products. I make my appointments with Lauren, who is very patient, kind, and thorough. They use all DevaCurl products, a pricier curly hair line, without trying to up-sell anything to you.
