Just your basic supermarket on Arthur Ave in the Bronx. Was expecting more in terms of imported items but it's basically just an ordinary mini supermarket. The produce selection was decent though and prices are on par with Stop & Shop. If you need staples than this place will do. Come expecting more will be a bit let down. read more

I am sad to say that this once seemingly reputable local supermarket which is owned by the same individual, Jose Perez, who owns the local C-Town on Crescent Avenue has become a hotbed of price gouging during the current COVID-19 virus crisis: $9.72 a pound for a 12 ounce package of Kraft American cheese, $9.49 for an eight pack of Scott toilet tissue, $5.29 for a dozen eggs, and $3.99 for a 64 ounce bottle of Apple and Eve Apple Juice that was $1.00 above the normal $2.99 to name a few. In the 34 years I've been shopping at this store their prices were never that high. Now that all the Fordham students and tourists are gone the owner is capitalizing on ripping off all the real neighborhood residents. The only upside of visiting this location is that the cashiers and local store manager are, and always have been, hard-working and reliable individuals who have continued to show up daily despite the current health risks they face. If you have experienced any price gouging at this at this location, or Jose Perez's C-Town Supermarket on Crescent Avenue, also in Belmont, you can call DA Leticia James' office to file a complaint regarding any necessary corona virus related items such as tissue, paper towels, Lysol spray and wipes and the like. Modern is the only supermarket that is convenient to go to if you go to Fordham or live near it. It's not great, but it's all we've got. The prices are not particularly impressive, but sometimes they have good deals. The produce is decent. There is a surprisingly good selection of cheese. The selection in general is mediocre, but sufficient; you won't find anything too obscure here, but they usually have the basics. Sometimes Modern drops the ball, but it's usually in kind of an amusing way. One time I was trying to make a pumpkin pie, and despite having all sorts of bizarre Caribbean spices, there was no cinnamon in the entire store. Another time, I was looking for vanilla, and couldn't find it anywhere. It turned out it was nestled amidst the cleaning products, somewhere between Mr. Clean and Formula 409. The selection of cold cuts is particularly bad. Overall, Modern is a slightly below average supermarket. My advice is to get as much as you can at the local shops on and around Arthur Ave and then head to Modern to get the rest. It's not great, but it'll do. read more

Shop here often due to being close and c town being crazy expensive but honestly prefer to spend more money and have better service. Cashiers are usually aggy or in a bad mood. When I lived half a block away from here, I made a habit of coming to Modern strictly out of convenience but was always a bit put off by the highish prices and small selection. So when someone told me C-Town was only a few blocks away, I checked it out. Despite the cheaper prices, I was easily overwhelmed by the massive size of C-Town in comparison to the pint-sized power of Modern and ran out of there within minutes suffering from something I can only compare to brief intense agoraphobia. Back to Modern for the rest of my Fordham stay. Also, Modern's produce is a lot nicer than that of C-Town. BUT be careful: fresh cheese there is crazy expensive! read more

I am a grad student at Fordham and live nearby. While C-Town is closer to my apartment, I tend to do most of my shopping at Modern Market instead. I prefer Modern Market for two reasons: one being that it is easier to navigate-- there are only about four or five aisles altogether, but they run very far back into the store, and there is more room to move around. I find getting around C-Town to be a hassle, especially when it's busy; it's crammed and you're constantly in people's way, or they're in yours. Second, in my experience, the employees at Modern are way friendlier. Not exorbitantly, but the staff here is way more pleasant, and the checkout lines move way faster. I haven't waited more than a minute in line here. Modern has a pretty good selection of dairy, as well as fruit and vegetables. The only thing off the top of my head that C-Town has more of is bakery stuff, like cakes and whatnot, but that's a non-issue for me. The store is always clean and well-stocked. In terms of price, I do find C-Town to generally be cheaper on some things, but not always. The stores compete, so it's a give-and-take situation. Modern Market may be marginally more expensive, but I've gotten some great deals on their sales here (2 containers of coffee cream for $5, a gallon of almond milk for $3). It just depends on the sales that week. If you want to score the best price on all your groceries, you'll have to make a trip to here and to C-Town, but I'd personally rather pay a couple of extra dollars than have to walk down to C-Town and deal with the crowds and lines. The bottom line is that we're in New York City, so groceries are a bit more (although not nearly as much as Manhattan's, thank God), but the prices here are fair enough. I'm from the west coast and honestly, I don't pay much (if anything) more for groceries here in the Bronx than I had to back in Portland. read more

Modern had been redone with new floors, new freezers and acquiring organic foods and specialty items such as quail eggs. I find this to be an improvement from the old Modern. The new version reminds me of Whole Foods in Chelsea. The manager will always listen to me if I make a suggestion or want him to order a food product. When I don't see a vegetable that I want, I ask a worker who goes into the back to get it for me. I find the staff reliable and friendly. Fairly small, not the greatest looking produce. As a college student,I prefer C town. It's about the same distance away from my apartment.

I loved this place before in changed to the Crown owners. The vegetables where the freshest in town and I was always greaterd with sincerity. The produce was top notch Naruto water down and old rotten overpriced and not managed well I overheard the new owner and all the representatives from crash there talking about that that was supposed to be the higher end of Seatown but I think I got the wrong end of the stick window and measuring for what is top notch the pencil what's I could barrel is all the shows of stock pretty tight but with mostly Christ Dale merchandise which I don't think a high and still with ever have visible to the customers when going to C town I never like to produce there I go down to the store and I get disgusted and I come up empty handed I have to go a long distance now to get my produce remove you from the inside there's no management accessible or visible to anyone to ask questions too the front of person that looks like she's running the place is always on her cell phone the people at the register just look like zombies its not a very nice inviting place when the first thing you see is rotten produce an overpriced items the end caps look like a old styles supermarket with a feature just junk I want to get rid of the aspect of having things fresh this way out of bounds there looks like they're using this supermarket to put all the extra garbage from C town to there this place needs a great manager that knows how to motivate the people and to make things happen it's too bad Arthur Avenue is now Staind with this bad landmark that used to be good I wish them all the luck in the World If I could give this place 0 or minus stars I would read more

Please check your fruit and vegetables -- more often than not there is mold on them. It is important to have a fresh stock. Please reduce the amount of plastic that you use to wrap vegetables. And finally (last but not least): check the expiration date on your products. read more

I've purchased items that where already expired, so make sure to check expiration date on anything you get from here. Also there's a very rude Hispanic cashier with black framed glasses who's always with a nasty attitude, she doesn't speak to greet or say thank you but loves flirting with the guys who work there & it's annoying because she was taking her sweet time bagging my groceries while there was a long line behind me.. so rude! I'm surprised someone hasn't made a complaint about that particular employee. I shop here at least 2-3 times a week, so I know clearly what I'm talking about. read more

Still just a 3-star. Modern has spruced itself up a bit, but the store still lacks a lot of desirable items. Considering the college clientele, it isn't surprising. And I still shop here rather than cross Fordham Rd for the wealth of frozen crap food at Compare. Plus, I sometimes prefer the produce at Modern to Compare's. read more

DISGUSTING. Make sure to check the expiration dates on everything you buy. I bought a bag of rice which had MAGGOTS in it. When I opened the rice these little worms were crawling all over my stove and traveled throughout the kitchen. A box of unopened cereal ALSO HAD MAGGOTS!!! I should've known never to go back but I did. I forgot to check the expiration date on yogurts which when I got home and went to eat, had EXPIRED A MONTH AGO. Why was that even on the shelves???? Do not go unless you are desperate. I am a fordham student living one block away and would rather travel to go food shopping then go to this disgusting excuse for a grocery store. read more

As supermarkets go, Modern doesn't have the best or most extensive selection, but it's really not half bad. In the last year and a half or so, they've really spruced the place up, and it's much better for it. You still are going to have a hard time finding any special ethnic foods that aren't Spanish or Italian, and I've had difficulty finding baking stuff there. However, it's clean and shiny and they have decent sales and very friendly cashiers. I've never had anything but prompt and cheerful service there. The produce always is fresh, and there's usually a fairly good variety of meats, though they don't really carry fish. There isn't a deli counter, but they have a cheese section, which has a limited but always interesting variety, and they stock bread from the local bakeries. Dry goods like cereal can be a little expensive, but all in all prices are reasonable. Modern isn't going to blow anyone's socks off, but it serves the neighborhood well and is way nicer than C-Town, which has a very sketchy return policy, (thanks for selling me rancid chicken!), and a rather curt staff who in large part don't speak English. This is definitely the best all around supermarket option in the neighborhood, and there are plenty of butchers, fishmongers, and Italian specialty shops nearby to supplement most shortcomings. read more

It is true that Modern is the only supermarket that is convenient for Fordham Students. They milk this for all it is worth. It is kind of futile to write a review for them became anyone that has any interest in reading it will probably have to go back there at some point anyway but the bottom line is: their prices are really high, their stock is low, and they are generally pretty dirty. Two good things I will say about them is their bread is pretty good(even though there are a ton of bakeries around it with better bread) and also the Macintosh apples are suspiciously good. Suspiciously only because they come from Modern. Even the apples I lugged from Whole Foods were not nearly as good. I like apples. read more

While Modern is not the best supermarket in the Bronx it certainly is not the worst. I don't mind the fact that the store is small, and I can find items there like Shallots, that I can't find in most stores in the Bronx. For Fordham students that want options however, you can simply walk up the hill to Tremont Avenue and shop at Mortons which has a larger selection. read more

This supermarket is okay however beware of the nasty, and rude cashier girls. I do not expect much from the cashier people but I definetly do not need an attitude. Unfortunately, most of the cashier girls, like Marilyn, throw your groceries carelessly into the bag. They do not listen to your requests and suck their teeth if you ask for them to be more careful. I, like many I presume, take the time to pick out fruits and vegetables. Having them bruised and mishandled towards the end of grocery shopping is not what I want. If this cashier, who calls herself the manager, treats my food this way in my presence I can't imagine what is done to the food when no one is looking.
