Super busy on a weekend and we were browsing items. We wanted to get olive oil and one of the staff members came up to us and asked what we were using the olive oil for and explained which ones was better for eating versus cooking. He even let us sample the one we wanted and explained the bottle and how to know if it's from Italy. The olive oil we picked for dipping bread in hand a fragrant olive flavor that wasn't too strong and we were super excited to use it. The selection of imported goods there is great. I am Caribbean and I was surprised to see that they carry five roses flour here. They also carry a good selection of dry fruits to make black cake. What an incredible find!!! We stepped into another world after visiting the Botanical Gardens. The array of specialty foods was dazzling. When we asked about some meats and cheeses to take home we were treated like royal guests. We were given tasted of prosciutto wrapped around freshly made ricotta drizzled with the best tasting balsamic vinegar ever. It was like taking a private food tour of Little Italy. We discovered years ago on a walk down Arthur Ave. that Teitel Brothers has the best olive oils, including grades that are great for cooking that you can't find anywhere else anymore. We used to make a habit of stopping by after visits to the New York Botanical Garden, and always treated ourselves to something in addition to our staple oil: cheeses, anchovies, pastas, olives. During the pandemic, I discovered that I could place orders online, and also discovered that the service was just as friendly and prompt as it had been in person, with next day delivery right to my door in Manhattan. I still look forward to stopping by the store, but I've continued using the online option (saves me carrying large cans of oil to and from the subway). This had been my favorite spot to pick up Italian specialty items like Parmesan cheese, Sopressata and Prosciutto. I travel close to an hour down to the Bronx, just to stack up, because the items are good. My last two visits have been horrible. One trip they charge my credit card $10 more than the tab and this last time they were down right disrespectful. Granted the Mexican guy is not who I usually go to, but it was 5 pm on Saturday and they were rushing everyone. The hours are supposed to be until 5:30, so he was not in the mood to help me. He didn't give me what I was asking for and then started getting rude. Granted I told him why are you rushing me and not letting me get what I came for, when I drove over an hour and yesterday you did the same thing to my daughter in law and closed the door at 5? When one of the other guys came to ring me out it was the typical macho jokes amongst themselves because I was fed up with the guy's rudeness and I told them "this is Bullshit you shut the door yesterday at 5 and didn't let my daughter in law come in and now I drive here and you don't let me get what I need. What is this?! I was aggravated and asked to just get checked out. To them it was a joke..."oh it was a special event, it was a Jewish holiday." That right there is the reason I'm not going back. I know for a fact there was none and the mere fact that you can joke about another religion and insult women is down right disrespectful and racist. Honestly, as a professional woman, I have dealt with these types of disrespectful pigs before and know how to deal with them, but I No longer have the tolerance. I could have left my items right there and walked out, but I didn't. I paid and made it a point to not go back. They're not the only shop in town and for the service you get, I prefer to go somewhere that I'm respected as a customer and as a woman! read more

The pricing is also pretty solid, far less than in Manhattan, that's for sure. On the downside, this place always seems to have impossible lines packed with all sorts of elderly Italian folks who seem to be enjoying the atmosphere more than doing their shopping. Plus, it's a pretty small shop, so it's chaos every time I stop by. Still, for quality, value, and history, this joint gets 5 stars easily. Wish there were more places like this in NYC. read more
