It's easy for a business to say "just ask our staff if you need help." But these days, more often than not, no staff can be found; or if they are found, they're stressed out and seem put upon by requests from customers, especially lame questions from newbies. My first visit to Modern Laundry proved that they are the rare exception. Modern Laundry provides a spacious, well-maintained environment with machines that function well. I had not been to a self-service laundromat in a long time, and had no idea where to start. A kind staff member (I think his name was Rolando) noticed that I seemed to need help, approached me with a smile, then walked me through every step of how to obtain a payment card, how to choose a machine, where to put the soap and when and how much, etc. It would have floundered for a long time without his help. I am so grateful! The whole place had a comfortable vibe. It's a nice, safe place to hang out and get your laundry done efficiently. I love that they're open til 11 pm. There are a lot of machines and I haven't had to wait for a free one to do a load. When it's busy, I just have to look around for a free machine and I typically find one. I think the prices are ok although not too sure what the average is supposed to be. Dryer is 25c for 7 mins. Big load washers are like $4.95 for cold and lightly soiled. The medium/typical washers are $3.95 for cold and lightly soiled. I think its decently priced. If you use hot water and choose a heavy soiled setting it's above $5 on the big washers. I recommend this place. I keep coming here and only here because I love the ample room and seating. I like the card system bc I don't like carrying quarters. I have a feeling that this place limits the water extraction part of the cycle so you have to spend more on their dryers. A friend recommended this place. It was my first experience at a laundromat. I had no idea what I was doing and I'm forever grateful to a man named Jamie and one of the employees (whose name I didn't get ) for giving me the run-down and helping me. The washers were great. The dryers were confusing and I'm not sure if there was a way to add more time or if you just had to keep starting it again every 7 minutes... It was very busy around 11am on a Sunday and I had to scramble around and look for open washers to get all my loads done. I've been coming to Modern Laundry for a couple years now. They issue you a card that you can easily upload credit onto. No more quarter pushing!! The music is good, the machines work well there is usually something eye catching on the TV, and Anna helped refund me and reset the machine the one time there was a malfunction. She was present, helpful, cheerful, and she even went out of her way to write down the info for a local dry cleaner when I asked about dry cleaning. So I gotta give Modern Laundry 5 stars, because doing laundry is never FUN, but I don't mind it so much at Modern Laundry. Oh! And the bathrooms are always clean! That's a bonus!! read more

I'd really like laundry in my apartment but this is kind of the next best thing. Yes, I have to take it there, but when I show up there are machines so big and so small I'm kind of shocked by the variety. No matter how many I need there are always enough. I literally did 10 loads of laundry when I moved and there were plenty to spare. The machines use a pre-paid card, which was new even though I lived in San Francisco. Tech hub as it is we don't have those in my neighborhood -- I'd heard of a "laundry card" but never really got it. I gotta say it's way more convenient than quarters. Like a billion times more convenient. I love this place but I have one very mild complaint. I washed some dress shirts and took them to the window asking for a "low heat press". The lady didn't know what I meant so I said "just an iron on low heat, not even the collar, just around the buttons and holes". She told me they don't do any ironing, just fluff and fold. If I owned the window I'd have an iron and do some light pressing -- I'd have paid like $3 / shirt. Overall this place is CLEAN. I was actually the last to leave a couple days ago and literally every washer was open and had been cleaned by hand. I was absolutely shocked. Never had a positive experience or interaction with any staff during the few times I patronized Modern Laundry. Not one employee is helpful or polite. They rival Walmart employees in customer service (not a compliment) Laundromat customers clearly not a priority as staff occupied nearly every washer and dryer for the fluff & fold service. If they weren't using a dryer, they blocked access to it as they stood in front of the dryers to fold the heaps of laundry from multiple dryers. When asked to use the other dryers, the women ignore you and act like they don't understand or speak English. Extremely inconsiderate and rude. I deducted a star because parking is not always available during the day in the lot. It's a very busy lot, BUT Starbucks is across the lot. Huge plus. This laundry is large and CLEAN. Sometimes there are entire families inside and there is a little TV area near the back. But there are TVs and tables and chairs throughout the place. TV captions in English & Spanish. NOTE: This laundry only accepts its own card that you upload value to like an MTA card in NYC. So, go to the very back and find the card machines on the wall. Get a card and add value to it with cash or a credit card. Then you can use that card in any washer or dryer. I couldn't figure out how to use my credit card to upload value, so I used cash (bills only). The staff is super nice and when I didn't have a lingerie bag they let me borrow a mesh bag to wash a few things. There are small, medium, and large washers and they are priced according. Small loads are like $3.75 and medium go up from $4.75. Hot water increases the cost. Also it's easy to wash & dry four or five loads in an hour and half give or take a few minutes. They do let you wheel their carts outside to your car. Also they clean lint from the dryers twice a day - I witnessed this recently as an employee cleaned them up. Main point: Laundry + Starbucks is a huge plus. read more

DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS. The supposed "owner" of this place (I think his name is Jonathon- huge glasses and long black hair) was harassing my husband and I for the duration of our experience. He was so rude and refused to share an ENTIRE ROW of washers just for us to fold our items. He kept harassing us and threatened to "kick my husbands ass." I had to repeatedly tell him to stop getting in our face and he was fuming at us for no reason. He was very rude and clearly does not respect his patrons. First time at A laundry mat. Had to do my daughters college dorm bedding. Plenty of parking easy to get to huge washers and dryer's . I did seven huge loads all at one time it was perfect. It did take me a few minutes to realize you can't put your credit card in the washer and dryer's, you have to go to the counter and they load a card for you and that's the card you use for the washer and dryer. Modern Laundry is great! Always clean, extremely helpful staff, and has parking lot/WiFi/vending machines/outlets/TVs/a clean restroom. Next to Starbucks (better WiFi and coffee!), Italian deli, CVS, Ralphs - I usually get coffee and run errands while I wait. Parking lot usually has parking available, unless it's peak Saturday afternoon or weekday noon lunchtime rush. Washes seem a little more expensive but they're brand new machines which = super efficient, uses way less soap, and won't ruin your nice clothes. If I had to guess I would say that I'm paying the same per load because I use much less. The machines are great, the staff isn't so helpful, grouchy and unpleasant, door open at 6am, but they only let in whom they know earlier.

When this place first opened it was a dream !! However, things have changed. There are NOT enough laundry carts to the point where people just hold on to them w/o using them for their laundry. The laundry services were fine. The wash was $5! That goodness I only had one load as the washers were huge. But wow, not cheap. The cycles are fast, everything done in under 1:15. But the Laundromat was so loud, between the soccer game and the blaring music I couldn't get any work done. I had to go across the way to Starbucks. :( The machines were fine and my clothes came out as they should, always a concern with Laundromats. This is a very clean laundry with friendly and helpful staff. The hours are wonderful too but my only complaint is that they are suppose to open at 6:00 but 80 percent of the time (I go once a week) they do not. They are late by as much as 20-30 minutes. This makes for a big deal when I have to be to work early myself. I will say that most of the time they will make it right for being late to open. Thank you for that! Best service ever! I didn't realize u have to purchase a card to use the machines or buy items from the machine. The guy working not only helped me get the card and load it he also helped me see how much soap I actually needed and while I was loading my clothes he went and got the soap for me and then filled the machines with the correct measurements of soap. On top of that there are seats on the side with plug ins though the wifi is slow. But I just tether my phone and it's a sweet spot to work while doing laundry. read more

Great place. Clean and well taken care of. So many washers and dryers. Used the large washer @$4.50 a wash but loaded it with a lot. Dryers are .25/10min. Not bad considering most of mine was hung to dry. Great stop on our road trip. Chairs, tables and outlets to charge cell while you wait. Vending machines as well. Have to purchase a prepaided card for $1 which sucks because we are leaving town but easier to reload than using quarters. read more

WOW what can I say. This place is a dream come true. Laundry is impossible when you do not have your own washer and dryer set. you have to bum around for quarters, find a way to get to a Laundromat, and once you're there you have to awkwardly sit there waiting for your clothes to be cleaned. Heres how modern laundry does it right NO QUARTERS, ever. they have a cool card program, where all purchases within the store are all on your card. Even the vending machines accept cards, thats what I call attention to detail. CLEAN is the best way to describe it. all other laundromats that I have been to in SB have reeked of old mole sauce but modern laundry is different, it smells like fresh linen and baby's clothes. ENTERTAINMENT, do you like HBO because they have HBO and its not boring. And if you don't like HBO they have WIFI so bring your laptops and go crazy. ALSO their wash and fold service is amazing. My work uniform requires me to wear white shirts, and my white shirts always get stained. When I wash my white clothes the stains never come out. But when Jonathan at modern laundry washes my whites, my clothes come out sparkling, literally like the reflection of a ghost looking into the headlights of a 18 wheeler. Best place in Santa Barbara if you don't have a washer or if yours is broken. If you don't want to wash and dry your clothes they will do it for you (for a premium price$$&&) but still worth considering if don't have time to do laundry yourself. They have an array of different washers and dryers so you can choose the level/speed according to your budget. I like to do laundry super fast so I'll use the high speed machines ($3.50 to $4.50/load). Including washing, fully drying and folding, I typically get out the door in about an hour (3-4 loads total). The staff there is super friendly and always cleaning and making sure the place is clean and neat. They have flat screen televisions, vending machines and tables on site. read more
