I stopped by to order an iced coffee and I decided to order a bakery item. They have a very small bakery area but I noticed it while scanning the business. There were clients right in front of me and the guy at the register was friendly to them. I ordered an almond croissant and I took it to go. The barista asked me if I wanted the almond croissant warmed up and I said yes. When I arrived home the almond croissant was still warm. The almond croissant was huge and tasted so good! I enjoyed every bite of my breakfast almond croissant. Their iced coffee is so delicious! I usually take long to drink my 16 ounce cup of iced coffee but Modcup coffee's iced coffee I drank it so fast because of how good it was. Modcup is a great little coffee shop right off Palisade. I come for the cold brew, and leave with the cold brew. It's well done and not too expensive. I've been told the hot coffee is great as well. Not too pricey on the whole. The footprint is extraordinarily small, so if you see a line out the door, don't let that deter you. As unbelievable as it may seem, this very small coffee shop has an even smaller, super tiny little bathroom. SO if you find yourself sitting in the outdoor seating for a while, you'll have somewhere to go. And if you find yourself at the farmer's market across the street on a Sunday and need a pit stop, this is a great and unsuspecting choice (just be nice and get a coffee first, you know you probably want one anyway). I haven't been tempted by the pastries but they DO sell a (what I think is third party) chocolate chip banana bread that is very, very good. read more

Every time I walk by, I always see a long line outside this coffee shop. After the farmers market, I decided it was finally time to give this shop a try. Inside, it's a one man show (very efficient) with no indoor seating. There is outdoor seating where you can hang with your pup. I went for a cappuccino, but the iced lattes I saw came out looking like they had a perfect milk to espresso ratio. My cappuccino was very good - a perfect temperature (it's important) with a really tasty espresso flavor. This is definitely one of the best coffee shops in the heights, if not THE best (Bread and Salt is stiff competition for a classic espresso beverage). Plus, it came in a very cute cup. Was in the area and needed my morning matcha. This was the closest coffee shop to where I was staying. Service is very quick and staff are super attentive. I appreciate that they have so many repeating customers and the baristas know them personally and practically their orders. The pistachio latte was one of the best coffees I have ever had. It was strong, the flavor was great, and it had a perfect level of sweetness. I also got the cheese croissant and that was also really good. It was cheesy and flakey. I overall liked this place. There was unfortunately no tables or seating besides a small bench so do not expect to be here for long. read more

A great little coffee shop! I've stopped in a bunch of times, usually for just a hot black coffee and it's always just exactly what I needed. I also love their single origin and while it's a little more expensive, always really enjoyed it. I've also tried their peanut butter cup square thing and it was exactly the sweet treat I was looking for. I love the sea salt added on top. Salty & sweet is never bad. I've also gotten their overnight oats by Garnish (local to NJ I think) that they have in the fridge and could eat those really every morning. Great location right across from a park with a beautiful view of the city. We drove there from Staten Island because my wife heard about it on the comment section of some Instagram list, and it was well worth the gas and tolls money. The coffee was incredible. I had the cortado and it was one of the best cortados I ever had - strong and yet silky smooth. My wife had a cold brew and was thrilled too. We were in the area running some errands and I needed a coffee break. Modcup came up on Yelp and it was on our way home, so we made the stop. I was surprised to see that they had Kyoto Ice Drip coffee, it's not very common, even in NYC cafes. I've only ever seen it in two other cafes in NYC. Very happy about this - and very happy that I made this discovery! Barista was very nice and coffee was fab. Modcup is one of my favorite coffee shops. I've been visiting over the years and I believe that as time Goes on their coffee gets better. I wish it was a bigger coffee shop with more seating. However I do love the quirkiness of the shop. This is my go to place for straight up black coffee. By far the best black coffee I've had and I'm a coffee snob. Definitely an eye opening start to my day when I stop here for coffee on the way to work. I've been coming to Mod Cup since it opened. Quite frankly, you will not find better coffee anywhere in New Jersey. There are several locations now, but I've been a regular at 479 Palisade for almost a decade. If you've never had a Kyoto coffee try to order that if they have any left, it is an iced slow drip coffee and the taste is gonna blow your socks off. Hubby and I decided to change up our routine a little bit and go for a walk to the Jersey City Heights. I always wanted to give Modcup Coffee a try, which seemed to be a new age place. Yes, it definitely offered the new generation coffee, such as the nitro cold brew on tap. I found it was a bit weird to me, which had a distinct taste similar to a beer. The barista was pretty friendly but I could tell he was high. The shop was pretty tiny. Luckily, we visited on a very nice day and there were some benches outside. This coffee spot is right by our new pup's vet, so obviously we had to stop in. Each time that we've gone we were lucky enough to never been met with an extra long line, but instead were in and out rather quickly. Parking is not ideal, but it's Jersey City, so we all know that already. The inside is super cute, and the coffee is honestly worth coming out of your way for. I've opted for an almond milk latte each time or plain drip coffee and each time I'm super impressed with the taste. The beans they use have an almost velvety chocolate flavor that is somehow also not overpowering. Absolutely outstanding taste, mouthfeel, and power. One item on their menu that I'm waiting to try is their Kyoto coffee/12 hour ice drip. For the uninitiated, a 12 hour brew is a gift from heaven. Traditional cold brew steeps the coffee in water over 12-24 hours. Kyoto style controls the drip over the grounds, with some brewers using ice to melt even slower over the grounds. This method of ice drip allows the coffee to steep slowly as the ice melts over the freshly ground beans resulting in a mellow, strong, and delicious brew with the melting ice permeating all of the grinds along along the way. Quite honestly it's one of the best ways to drink coffee, and considering it's only $5/6 here, I'm kicking myself for not trying theirs yet. I guess on our next visit to the vet/groomer! read more

Modcup deserves an updated review as they are thriving in the heights and I've become an obsessed believer of Mod Coffee and the duo dishing it out. I never understood the importance and oddly-beauty- of a cafe roasting their own coffee beans (you'll be surprised [or not] how many shops don't roast). Not bashing any coffee shops brewing popular brands like Intelligentsia, LaColombe, or Toby's Estate but it's an impressive craft to roast your own coffee beans and to find the exact roasting profile to get you a "nearly perfect, cleeeeeeeannnnn cup of coffee."* It's an art form and a science folks and Justin and Travas have totally figured it out. *said in Travas' British accent read more

I'm sad because I want to give this establishment a 5 star. I wish I could rate the weekday service a 1/5. And the coffee a 5/5. I'll start with my likes first: the dairy free milk options, the quality espresso, the location, the cafe itself, the outdoor seating area. What I don't like and can't support is the unfriendliness of the weekday staff. Granted I love the usual weekend workers! I love picking this up before a Sunday farmer market stroll. Modcup is a tiny spot with very few seats so good luck trying to sit and sip on a weekend. The decor has a Britpop '60's vibe which I find a little dated and a bit bloke-y. Coffee is good but a tad pricey for the neighbourhood. They also have a small selection of pastries and offer coffee by the pound and coffee related paraphernalia for sale. Service is slow (order at the counter, pay and wait for the barista to call your name) but fairly friendly. Came here because of a girl talked about this place all the time and claimed they have the best coffee. I was a very disappointment however. The ambience is cool, tiny and hippy. Everyone seems to know everyone, all having a good conversation at the corner. I wanted a de-caf latte so bad due to my pregnancy, but they don't have that option. So had a regular coffee with milk. I waited at least 15 minutes for that, which was fine if the coffee was good. Looks like he brew my de-caf coffee just for me( appreciated). Somehow their cold brew with milk is much better than I can find anywhere else -- I think the fact that they use the concentrate really helps. Their espresso based drinks are all amazing too and the gold label pourovers are great. Finally, they roast their own beans which I sometimes buy to make coffee at home and those are top-shelf as well. Their philosophy is very much that other cafes over-roast coffee in order to mask for defects. As a result, their roasts are on the lighter side and more floral and fruity. read more

It was Coffee 101 when I walked into this spot and I loved every minute of it! The cafe was decorated with British pride and pictures of what I assumed were the Black Keys but then I realized it was the owners Travas & Justin. They are phenomenal guys and so passionate about their coffee. I had a long discussion regarding watered-down iced coffee and he explained to me that this would not happen with their coffee. I didn't even add soy milk or sugar-it was that perfect. Makes you appreciate the taste of fresh coffee! If you aren't sure what to get- make sure to ask because they are more than willing to help. This Saturday(not sure if it's every Sat) they are having an event- 8 a.m-2 p.m. A DJ/Food truck comes by as people enjoy great coffee and mingle with other people who love the same. In under a year, the Hoboken coffee cart duo, Travas and Justin, also known as the mod men of modcup, turned brick at mortar. How exciting is that?! And the truck is still on the way AND the cart will be out again once this bloody winter is over. I still remember my first visit to the men of modcup when they were a little cart that could. Hell, I even remember the first time I heard of them! I was back home in Cali and it was via twitter. Once I got back to the JerZ, I was so excited when I was walking to work one day and there the cart was. It only took that one visit to get me hooked. Their coffee is unbelievably, hands down, the best coffee you will ever drink. You will soon find yourself buying beans and an aeropress (which they now conveniently sell at their NEW Cafe!) so you can make their coffee when you're not able to be near. The next reason I became a loyal modcupper, is because of the service. My most solid relationship these days is with my baristas and I'm happy my mod men are it. You are not just a customer with them, you become family. The sense of community they bring is untouchable. Their new cafe in the heights with that damn gorge city view, is the perfect spot. Quaint, cozy, and oh so mod. Start up a convo, don't be shy, they probably have already started one up with you. But if you get to know these gents on the level that I so lucky enough have gotten to, you will see bits of each of their personalities in this cafe. Which truly makes the growth of the mod empire special. Tunes will always be playing via vinyl. Post up on the cushiony bench seating and enjoy your bevies, or sit at the counter seating which was geniusly built lower for better customer interaction. It's the details guys, it's the details. I have yet to have a coffee that has not made me swoon. I can never have just one as I always start with a Cortado. The Kenyan is my favorite via chemex. Sumatra via aeropress. Their cold brew has ruined all other cold coffees for me. So it's a blessing they sell their concentrate by the bottle. If coffee is not your thing, do the Chai. I repeat, DO THE CHAI. Or if you're daring, dirty your chai up. I can go on, and on, an on, about how great your coffee experience will be but I want you to experience the mod experience yourself. So get there. Used to come here all the time but stopped because they don't take cash anymore. I really don't understand why business are turning towards this practice. I work in an industry where cash tips are a large portion of my salary and I feel excluded from shopping at stores that only accept card or electronic payments. Travas, one of the owners, professes his love of his coffee passion, coupled with his British accent, it will reel you right in. Freshness seems to be the key motto. The star attraction, the coffee beans, wait that is not right, ahhh I know the coffee cherries. These cherries needs to be brewed within 18 days (News to me!). He explains that there is a coffee pantomime happening, and Mod Cup is here to uncover that facade. One will learn true meaning of coffee or the meaning of life. I am not sure of the precise order. I was there for their soft opening and the official opening. Everyone there was gawking at the coffee dynamic duo, Travas and Justin. I was lucky enough to try the perfectly blended French press, please try it black. Next, ask for it to stay, you will be happy with their funky orange cups. Make sure you position the cup properly when drinking. Finally take a nice whiff of this coffee masterpiece. What a quaint space, maximized to the fullest, great decor. (especially the reclaimed bench in the front) I am always a fan of metal piping/wooden planked combo. Basically that is a win, win in my book. Oh yeah, M.C. is in Jersey City Heights. This place makes fantastic coffee. How fantastic? I have been craving it since Sunday, it's Tuesday. I regretted not getting a second cup to go. I order the espresso with milk. It is amazing. So creamy and smooth. The coffee is nutty and flavorful, etc. whatever it's good. I'm currently sitting here waiting for my two large espresso with milk, to go. Don't worry they're not both for me. One is for a friend. I swear. The space is small. The music is great. The staff is friendly and not afraid to answer your numerous coffee related questions. They have some stuff for sale.
