In 2022, I hired Great Performances to help celebrate the launch of my book at the iconic Strand Bookstore in NYC. I flew in friends and family for what was meant to be a milestone moment. A day before the event, I contracted COVID and, heartbreakingly, had to cancel. The contract clearly stated that in cases of force majeure--like illness--neither party would be at fault. I no longer lived in NYC, so rescheduling wasn't viable. I reached out, respectfully and in good faith, to discuss paying a portion of the nearly $6,000 charge. Instead of any further acknowledgment, I was ghosted. They stopped answering my emails entirely. No returned calls, no response--just silence. I then worked through American Express, who initially agreed I shouldn't be liable. But after years of back and forth, I was told the full charge would stand. Throughout this time, I have yet to speak with a single human being from this company. This isn't just poor customer service. It's a failure of integrity. They collected thousands of dollars for an event that never happened, provided no flexibility, no dialogue, no professionalism. I waited to write this review in hopes of resolution. That hope is gone. So is my money. If you care about decency, transparency, or the simple act of being treated like a human being--look elsewhere.

I went to order a meal with 2 coworkers. The place was completely empty. I asked the lady for my meal, and she went to heat it up. My coworker goes, and she tells him Mac and Cheese, is not a side dish. Okay, fine. So he can't have mac and cheese with a piece of chicken?? I just thought this was very strange. He would have easily paid full price for each, but to claim that mac and cheese is its own entree was just weird. AND to claim that like, he COULDN'T have something - weirder. So, she took our stuff, went to heat it up. The guy who's really nice, usually at the register, had to go make this chick a salad. So he went to do that, but now I'm waiting with my food getting cold, to be rung up. The older man who ordered behind me, had his money out, and clearly wanted to pay before me, but whatever, I was there first! Overall, the food I ordered, really was great. However, that place is really not all that crowded, simply because, it was really slow. Empty when we walked in - still took at least 15 minutes to get out of there. Whew- okay. Probably won't be back soon. At Johny's I get my food in like 10 seconds.

We had been searching for our wedding for 2 months and hadn't found a single caterer who checked all the boxes we were looking for and at a reasonable price. At the end of our ropes, we went in to Darbar for a tasting service and immediately the experience was different. Mike the Owner was kind and attentive, asking us questions about our event, and making sure that we were having a good time during the tasting. The food was all delicious. This was the first easy decision we'd had regarding choosing a vendor for our wedding and we immediately decided that we would have Darbar cater our wedding. Now, one might think that the service we received that night was a one-off experience to get us in the door. It was anything but because all through the process of planning and ultimately executing our event, Mike was extremely accommodating and worked hard to make sure we, and most importantly, our guests were going to be happy. The actual event itself was wonderful. The food was hot, fresh, and delicious, and the service was exemplary. At no point did we have to guide or direct anyone, and everything was seamless and smooth. They went above and beyond in ways we weren't even aware of but learned after the event - all to make sure that everything was smooth for our guests and to make sure that we weren't burdened by any troubles during the event itself. I cannot thank Mike enough, he truly added so much to our wedding. We highly recommend Darbar Catering Services to anyone searching for a truly top tier caterer.

I ordered beef suya, chin-chin, egusi with beef, joloff rice, and fufu. Though the suya spice mix is a step down from Buka and Brooklyn Suya, they were generous with their serving size so it felt like a fair value. The chin-chin was the best single item. But when I cracked open the egusi expecting "stewed tender boneless beef," I was seriously let down. Instead of what was described, got a few chunks of what feels like dried beef tossed in egusi sauce. The sauce was good enough but that was not what I ordered. The worst issue was the joloff rice though. It was burnt - inedible. Another strange thing was that I got text messages from some app called "grpvyn" after ordering. DF's own order page required you to send a separate venmo transaction at the end, which sounded annoying, so I went with Grubhub. If you want to discourage people from using it, how about you fix your own site first instead of signing your customers up for random text messages as punishment?

The egusi was a bit too salty (perhaps that's how it usually is) but the goat was "hard". It could have been cooked more so it became more tender. The fufu was the best part of the dish. Once again in fairness, I'm not sure what the flavors are supposed to be, I also ordered the jollof rice. It had a smoky taste (almost like a burnt taste to my tastebud). I don't want to give a bad review because I am inexperienced with Nigerian food but it just seemed a little off to me.
