Kinda thin but not potato chip thin. Not too packed on a weekday night, but could see it being busy on a Friday/weekend. First 2 times my girlfriend and I came here alone and then with friends. It was so great! However, this last time our waitress was so damn rude to us right from the beginning! This was a young, thin waitress with curly brown hair and glasses. She then mistakenly told me there was nothing to worry about with my food allergies. However, 15 minutes later, she informed me she was mistaken about the ingredients with 2 of the 3 items I ordered. I had no choice but to cancel my order. At this point she shamed me for "wasting their food!" - get some manners! Even before the whole food allergy mishap she was quite rude, unwelcoming, and unpleasant. A quick look at the specials menu and I knew the fried okra and New England clam chowder was a must to start with! I splurged and tried their Belgian Quad, though I am not a beer drinker, I found it absolutely delicious! I even ordered a second! Feeling good now, I ordered one of their perfectly juicy and flavorful burgers, a little beer cheese and fries on the side and I was as big as a whale swimming out of there! I was staying in New Bedford and wanted an earlier dinner at around 4:30 PM, so I went to Moby Dick Brewing. This restaurant is named after the book Moby Dick, which Herman Melville (he resided in New Bedford) wrote. The restaurant has a nice modern feel. There's also a bar with TVs at the front. They were showing the Flyers-Bruins game when I was there and then the SEC championship game. I got a sparkling water from the gun - they did not have bottled sparking water like San Pellegrino, which was a bit disappointing. However, my main meal was spectacular! I got the turkey and apple grilled cheese - without the bacon. It was very good and hearty. The bread and turkey was fresh and the combination of provolone cheese and thinly sliced apples went well together. I thought the turkey could have been sliced a bit thinner. We ordered the easiest thing on the menu. Two bowls of clam chowder and crab cakes with a bottle of wine. We didn't receive our wine for about 18 minutes. We waited for our food for over an hour! We finally paid for our wine and left. They didn't apologize or comp us anything on the wine. We then left and googled best clam chowder in New Bedford and the Black Whale came up. I came across this place as I was strolling around the neighborhood. It was a good choice. The ambiance is pretty chill. The hostess was nice from the moment you walked in. I ordered to-go since I had to get back to my hotel to get dressed for an event. I ordered the fish and chips, it had the right amount of crisp from the fish to the chips. I also ordered the braised short ribs that came with mash and Brussels sprouts. Everything was well done. The braised short ribs were tender and the mash was done perfectly. Now the Brussels sprouts were simply amazing. Done to perfection not soggy but perfect. Everything was great except they forgot my kid's drink. Just please be aware next time. read more

update: we visited again a year later and it was so so much better! first, the staff was great! we were seated early for our reservation and the host was very kind, but i have to say our waitress was great. i hate that i can't remember her name because i would have loved to shout her out - super sweet, attentive, and quick! although it is quite loud in here, i didn't find that that impacted our experience much, just a little hard to hear but the place is nice and has a clean look to it! now for food: we started off with the buffalo chicken dip + tortilla chips which was delicious! i loved that the chips were so fresh and complimented the velvety, not over spicy or overpowering, dip perfectly. for my entree, i ordered the new england baked scallops. i was a bit apprehensive because they looked a little bit watery but they were pretty good, the ritz crumb topping was super enjoyable. i really liked the mashed potatoes and absolutely loved the butternut squash. overall, a really nice experience and i would definitely visit again! read more

Our family ate at Moby Dick's on July 21st - we f had our daughter and two grandchildren in from California- and they like to try local establishments- the food and service was great - BUT - and there is always a but- we had reservations at 6 PM - the evening was going well until a " self proclaimed Fairhaven boy let loose with a number of profanities which included a number of " F" bombs - he was obviously drunk - I did not my family being subject to this type of language, especially our grandchildren- the bar maid should have shut him off and made arrangements for his safe ride home. I wanted to like this place. 4 of us went in Saturday at 4:30. We ordered fried clams, fish and chips, chicken fingers and tofu sub. My 10 year old grandson even complained. EVERYTHING was fried in old oil and overfried overpriced. The fish was dark and raw inside. I wanted to return everything. I was told not to. Our waitress heard us talking and never asked what the problem was. She even asked us if we wanted to take the food home. It was uneaten for a reason. A total waste of 150 dollars. The hostess said that the wait would be 45 minutes to an hour but we saw a bunch of empty tables outside so we asked her if the wait would be different for a table outside and she was able to seat us immediately. From the menu, we ordered: -Crispy Calamari: With crispy banana peppers, topped with grated parmesan and chipotle aioli -Lobster roll: Fresh lobster on a bioche roll with mayo and lettuce -Surf N Turf burger: Beef patty topped with lobster meat, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, special sauce on a brioche bun We enjoyed the Calamari. The breading was light and it wasn't heavily fried which we liked. The lobster roll was good. It had a lot of lobster meat stuffed into the roll and came with a side of fries. For the burger, we asked to cook the meat to medium rare and it came back overcooked and kinda burnt (not just charred grill marks but actually tasted burnt). Had a late lunch here and service and food were both outstanding. Great beer list and lots of food choices and though it didn't matter for us they are able to make lots of items gluten free or vegan. We shared the kale potstickers and Portuguese soup as starters and I could have eaten bowls of the soup. We were a party of four on a weekday mid afternoon (so no lunch or dinner rush). I think there was only one waitress working the mostly empty restaurant and she was incredibly slow and unengaged. From forgetting our waters to us having to go to the bar to ask for our check, just really poor service unfortunately. I had the French onion burger which came with no onions! I never had the chance to ask for them because the waitress never came back to check, so I just chalked it up to the total bad experience of the day. Happily stumbled upon this cute brewpub for a recent dinner with my dad. We wanted a quick bite so we went with appetizers as our dinner. We got the Bavarian pretzel sticks, crispy calamari, and a quahog each. The pretzels were hot and fresh with a great beer cheese. The cheese had the perfect amount of beer flavor for a tang but not too much that it was overpowering. The crispy calamari also tasted fresh and crispy. I loved the addition of the banana peppers and the aioli. Together it gave it a zesty and slightly spicy flavor. I tried my first quahog here and really enjoyed it. I included a picture but I think it taste much better than it looks. I also tried the strawberry ale and it was delicious as well! Our server was so nice and really helpful when ordering. The location is nice & we were able to sit outside. We were seated quickly and our waiter got to us quickly. He also checked on us a couple of times w/ out being too much 5/5 for him. We had lobster rolls. They were good. The lobster was fresh and cooked just right. The fries were excellent. My only small critique is that the roll was large & the lobster meat got lost in all the bread (round roll). No apps, no dessert and one beer. They have a cute outdoor seating area so we sat outside and started out with two IshmALE's. We enjoyed the beer, which is brewed right on site. We opted to go for several small plates instead of entrees, and we devoured everything. My favorite item we ordered had to be the crab rangoon flatbread. Came here on a Saturday night for dinner. Service was on the slow side, though it was pretty busy, so understandable, but our server was friendly. She recommended the raspberry beer, which was great! I initially got the sesame scallops, which they ran out and they couldn't tell me until half an hour later, so I switched my order to the lobster roll. My partner got Jamaican Jerk Burger. We also got calamari to share. Calamari portions were generous and came with some fried peppers as well. They came with chipotle aioli on top and they tasted good (abeit on the bready side for me), though the sauce would've been nice on the side. My partner loved his burger, but I didn't care for my lobster roll. The brioche roll it came in was good, but the lobster meat was cold and tasteless. we walked in mid afternoon 2 o'clock. Two women. An employee is standing at the back of the restaurant with no identifiable T-shirt or clothing to identify him as an employee. On his phone, ignoring myself, my wife and two other ladies that were waiting the restaurant was practically empty. I had to walk all the way up to him and ask are you an employee? He responded yeah - you can sit anywhere - nonchalantly. Next the food, I had clam chowder and a stuffy. It was horrible. The food was horrible. my wife the wings and sweet potato fries & wings the fries tasted greasy like old oil was used & were severely overcooked, as was the wings. The stuff he was tasteless and dry. The chowder was a joke. The ambience in the restaurant is tattered and worn. My wife went to the restroom, the toilet in the restroom is practically falling off the stand it rattles and rolls while you're trying to use the bathroom. overall our experience was horrible. The service was horrible. The ambience was horrible. perhaps if you were in there to drink alcohol, this would be the place. I don't know the bar was empty. Not a place to go to enjoy a nice lunch.
