Calling this the 4th best stadium is like calling gas station sushi the 4th best meal in America. It's delusional, it's offensive, and it's probably dangerous to your health. The "amenities" include bleachers that feel like you're sitting on a punishment device from medieval times, a sound system that makes every announcement sound like Charlie Brown's teacher, and a scoreboard that looks like it was ordered off Craigslist. The atmosphere? Imagine a high school game where everyone's dad is yelling about "running the ball" while holding a warm Busch Light. That's the energy. Food? If you like paying $10 for nachos that taste like they were made during the COVID lockdown and stored under the bleachers since, you're in luck. I'll give it this -- it's probably the 4th best stadium in Mobile. And that's only because there are only 3 others.

New stadium, who dis?…read more The University of South Alabama built is first-ever, on-campus stadium, last week was the stadium opener against Tulane, and boy is she beautiful! The video board and fireworks are quite impressive and everything's shiny and brand spanking new in this 25,000-seater. I didn't get a chance to visit, but there's a nice sized "locker room" on site to shop for souvenirs, gifts, and team paraphernalia. Social distancing and masks are required, there are ample sanitizing stations, clear bag policy is in full effect, and it's 100% cash-less.

Just a fantastic film festival. It's an annual event in its third year and happens in November,…read morestarting on a Thursday and ending on a Sunday. If you are a fan of movies and/or filmfests you will love it. This was my first year attending so I cannot speak for the other two years, but this year's line-up consisted of great shorts, narratives, documentaries, and full length. None were commercial and so you really got exposed to movies you wouldn't otherwise see. That is my major beef with other Film Fests, that they often show movies that will or are already in movie theaters (NOLA film Fest in recent years) and don't focus on regional/local films or talent. Many of the films I saw over the weekend were locally produced, shot, and/or had local subject matters. That is what I am looking for in a filmfest: that it has an overall theme and that it focuses on the area or region where it is located. Keep in mind that Fairhope isn't that large of a city and consequently the firlmfest isn't large. But it was a professional operation with volunteers, professional brochure and schedules, and they even had themed swag you could buy ( I got a coffee mug). They also handed out a free coupon book that could be used at local businesses, which I thought was a great local touch. There were a few places to catch the films but all were located in the heart of downtown Fairhope to getting around was very convenient. I picked up on tickets at the downtown city offices and they were very helpful with the lay of the land. Parking was also not an issue, as there is non-metered street parking all over the downtown area. I parked my car around 9:30 am and didn't leave until around 5:00. I walked everywhere that day. There are great places to get lunch and some fantastic shopping and so in between films I got something to eat and did some light shopping. All-in-all it was a fantastic day. If you love smaller filmfests showcasing great independent movies then you will enjoy the Fairhope filmfest. The fact that it occurs in a charming town is just the icing on the cake! Check it out...you will be glad you did!

The Saenger is a beautiful venue with fantastic acoustics and atmosphere. From ushers to servers at the concessions/bars everything is southernly hospitable. I particularly enjoy conductor Scott Speck's brief music appreciation talks pre concert. Sunday afternoon concerts are laid back and usually less crowded than evening ones. Unless there is a special occasion, food is not available-- but coffee, sodas, wine and bar are available at concessions priced in second photo with popcorn and candy also.

I mean, what is St. Patrick's Day without Silky on his thrown or sharing a diver with drunk goats? I might have been a little homesick for the day, plus Silky died a few years back. So I knew it was time to start a new tradition here in my new hometown. I was afraid LuckyFest was going to be elbow to elbow crowed and so loud you couldn't hear yourself talk. Inside, it was. Out in the tent was a much different story and that turned out to be the place to be. I'm so glad I went! We had a blast! Well, I vaguely recall having blast and judging by the pictures, I'm pretty sure I did. Early on, another Yelper couple introduced me to a nice white-bearded Irish gent all decked out in a green suit. He gave me a button and showed me snapshots of his dogs. That perked me right up! Later in the night, another man decked out in a green suit came by with his little doll and mingled. Then there were the two men that Rachel and I suspected might be secret service agents, but they couldn't really tell us what they were doing there in business suits and ties. Mix all that up with a photo booth, some beer and great appetizers, and you've got quite the party. Oh, they also had great bands playing and they played a variety of songs anyone could sing and dance too. Whether you've lived here forever or you're a transplant like me, I would definitely recommend hitting up LuckyFest on St. Patrick's Day! It's my new St Pat's tradition!
