    Nice and neat scotch.

Kazoolas is the best place for Jazz on Thursday nights. Al King really puts on a show. Now we have football season too. Great food. Great spirits. Great Company. I don't think it can get any better. 5 stars for this hip joint. Ha ha. I said HIPJOINT Every night I've been to Kazoolas I've had a blast. The owners do a lot for the community and we welcome them with open arms. Sometimes it's like a high school class reunion at this spot so keep you eyes peeled and ears open for new sounds.

Kazoola's is a mixed bag for me, but always comes out on the positive. I love the music, and while I wish the musicians would be more professional with their sets-- start times, playing and break times, that's not necessarily on Kazoola's. The vibe is great! I love the history displayed throughout the restaurant, and the staff's willingness share that history with new patrons. (Walter was a gracious host and very knowledgeable.) On my two visits, the place has been packed, but they do a good job of handling crowd control and service. The food is pretty good, the wings are a favorite. I haven't found a drink on the menu that I like as I'm a craft cocktail girl, and Kazoola's isn't meeting the mark on that yet. I've tried two of their martinis (served in a wine glass) and a margarita-ish deal. They were drinkable, but not great. On my first visit and after a few tries with the drink menu, Walter made my friend and I a "nameless concoction" that was pretty good, but if he's not in the building, I'm in trouble on the drinks. On my last visit, I think I saw Angry Orchard on tap, so I may just stick to that going forward. All in all, Kazoola's is an awesome contributor to the entertainment/music scene in downtown Mobile!

My church group came here to eat after a Mobile City trolley ride tour. We were to arrive in the afternoon when the business normally was about to close. There was a group of 20 of us. Not only did he stay open past his closing hours, but he prepared a buffet fit for kings and queens with table service included. The buffet offered baked chicken, green beans with potatoes, steamed cabbage, red beans and rice with Conecuh sausage, corn bread pancakes and peach cobbler Oh my Goodness, the food was soooooooooo delicious that I just gorged myself! I indulged in one of the 7 deadly sins - gluttony. Many times restaurants that offer soul food usually cook food that has entirely too much salt. That is NOT the case with this eatery because the food was flavored with other spices instead of excess salt. I have not had the opportunity to experience jazz there, but from reading the other reviews, I think that will be a wonderful time also.

The "nostalgic", ambiance will "make you feel like a king or queen you are" Kazoola (real name from Yoruba, Africa in 1860) named after one one last slaves to be brought to the land. He landed in what was later named Africatown Settlement of the Mobile River. Once here he given the name Cudjoe Lewis and so that's the start of this fantastic establishment. With that being said let me start with the ambiance...This is one of the most relaxing eateries I have ever had the pleasure of partaking. If I had a recliner and bed they couldn't pry me from the premises. Each time I enter it has the smoothest jazz, neo-soul that just make me want to kick off my shoes and fire up a good Cuban and unwind. Hallelujah!!!!! The staff is "first-class" that treats "everyone the same: spectacularly" !!!!! They go from greetings to try this to taking you on a tour and giving you the full story of not only the name of the establishment but the reason why! The owner although he is a Omega (if you are familiar with fraternities), is one of the nicest people who goes out of his way to ensure you have a good experience. Bartenders and wait staff are following his lead!!! The menu is small consider this being an eatery that is open for lunch but you won't go wrong with any choice. I have had almost everything on the menu and it has always hit the mark (he may know I was setting up for this review). It has a full service bar with some unique choices of beer on the tap. They have a little known brew from the NOLA (New Orleans or Big Easy) named Band of Brothers. They also have a number of beers and wines that small establishment would normally carry. I actually had a ginger vanilla root beer drink as a chases to my scotch one night that was awesome!!!! (For you high end Gin drinkers take note...it would be perfect) They open at 11 and the kitchen closes briefly after lunch as they prepare for the "leisurely dinners experience"!!! Happy hour is phenomenally relaxed and easy on the mind, body and soul!!!! So if you are looking to try something new, smooth and diverse in the downtown Mobile area...this is your spot!!! Don't run just ease on down the road to Kazoola's for a good experience!!!

I was invited to Kazoola for lunch and I left pleasantly satisfied. I ordered lemon pepper wings and fries. Those wings were the tastiest wings that I have had in a while. My friends ordered other dishes and they all looked amazing. We tried the cheesecake that had a watermelon purée and you can tell it was homemade with love. Also, Your drink comes with your meal at great prices. I have found my new downtown lunch spot.

I never knew it was there... glad we stopped in for breakfast. Scrambled eggs. Potatoes. Sausage. Grits. Fruit. Pork chops. Wings. They ran out of silverware, said someone has been taking them. Nonetheless, the service was good and the food was delicious. We will return.

Real light crowd at that time it was quite early but started to pick up, always enjoy downtown evenings, had a couple of drinks which were great and suggested by the bartender Pepa, she was cool, took our order promptly and made sure our eats were just as good as our drinks. Live music on Thursday a major plus...Ordered fish and fries it was ok nice and hot also came quick no long wait, good service, good drinks and food I will be back..thanks guys

I had the fried pork chops, cheese grits, and potatoes and peppers and thought it was very tasty. The portions are good size and the price is reasonable. My only complaint is that it is very loud as are most restaurants that have brick walls and concrete floors and no acoustics. They look really cool but it's hard to have a conversation. The menu is not large but it has a nice variety of options. I understand at night they have Jazz and rhythm and blues music but I have not been here in the evening.

Have you been to Kazoola yet? If not, you need to bump it up to the top of your list. We are so very lucky to have this cool restaurant/jazz club in downtown Mobile! I went in on a Friday during lunch. After taking a quick glance over the menu, I decided on smothered pork chops with rice and gravy and Mac and cheese. It came with a drink and a hoecake. That's a cornbread pancake, in case you didn't know. It was SO good! That gravy was so delectable that I stopped up every last drop with my hoecake after I finished off my pork chops. While I was waiting on my food the director gave me a little tour of the place. It's dang near a museum. If you're a history buff, you'll love this place! The name Kazoola is from Cudjoe Kazoola Lewis, who was the last known survivor of the Atlantic slave trade. The artwork in the place is fascinating. There are several pictures of Lewis, one with his granddaughters (or maybe great granddaughters), one of which is still alive today. There's a mural on the wall of him. There's a copy of the slave ship's manifest, as well as a copy of the very first census of Africatown. There are a couple of pictures of historic markers of the oldest church and cemetery in Africatown. If you don't know the history of Africatown or Cudjoe Kazoola Lewis, it's worth a Google. There's also a gorgeous patio in the works and...wait for it...a cigar club going into an older house out back that's currently being renovated. That patio is going to be pet friendly too! There's a salon being built upstairs from the restaurant. The whole place is incredible! They have live jazz music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. This little gem of a place is a tremendous asset to downtown Mobile. Do yourself a favor and go check it out. My husband is going to absolutely love this place!
