I cannot adequately convey to you how awesome this large and unpretentious rock shop is if you are traveling with small children, medium children, or have a childlike streak inside your own heart. In our case, this led to a hat trick and an amazing stop. They have everything from various obscure minerals and precious stones to jewelry, polished marbles, a gigantic amethyst geode, and a hoard of fossils and petoskey stones, all the way to giant tables of bargain rocks that you can even apparently buy in the middle of the night, on the honor system, by shoving cash into a little metal night box. It has enough random awesomeness to make it so much better than the tourist trap you might have been expecting. We came here every day of our trip, even in our way out of town, and it was probably my kids's single favorite thing about Moab proper. read more

Super cute touristy place filled to the brim with rocks and fun knick knacks! The shop is extremely small and the aisles are tight. Some things seemed overpriced, but it's a souvenir shop, so that's to be expected. There were a lot of staff on sight and all appeared welcoming and happy to help. Their prices are pretty reasonable as well. You can get a $3 worry stone or spend several hundred on an amazing mineral/crystal. Folks working the shop are kind and patient. Definitely a must visit when you're in Moab! This place is a real rock shop, different from the hippie shops that usually also sell incense, dream catchers or lots of jewelry. It's mainly just a rock shop with some jewelry. You'll see the baskets and buckets of rocks out in the parking lot already before you even go in the store. They even have a box to collect money based on an honor system (Most of the stuff they put out are worth less than $5.) People are really friendly and knowledgeable there. They know rocks and minerals. There are also cool specimens inside to look at if you don't wanna buy. There's a section at the back that showcase minerals from Utah - not a big section though. We spent over $300 ( yup ) and its no doubt best rock place we ever went to They have best selections of fossils, rocks, crystals and all kind of dinosaurs, mammoth stuff etc.. BUT.... Soldier faced girl with glasses and black hair was super rude. She was very very very lazy and treated us like we are wasting her time. I really liked looking at the wide array of polished stones and crystals that they have from around the world. Most of the fossils were replicas, though I saw real amber pieces. The workers were relaxed and friendly which was really nice. Eventually I got some jewelry and I did really appreciate the variety of different pendants, beads, and such to pick from. If you have kids, keep a close eye on them in the more display side, as they warn that breaking or dropping certain things means you buy it! But the kids can still enjoy sifting through the smaller unpolished rocks. read more

This almost felt like a rock museum! The shop doesn't look all that big from the outside, but they've sure stuffed it full of all sort of cool things. They have a lot of rocks outdoors that would make good souvenirs for kids (I think they also had free shark teeth for kids with a little print out, but I can't remember exactly what was offered). It's hard to even start a list of what they have, but I'll try...geodes (cut and ones you can pick out yourself to be cut there), petrified wood, tons of fossils (dinosaur teeth, trilobites, shells, sea lilies (they look like aliens!), fish), selenite lamps (I really wanted one of these), jewelry, worry stones, polished and rough gemstones, and of course just really neat hunks of rock (seriously, hundreds of different types). I think the prices were reasonable. They had items from $1.00 to thousands. Of course you're buying a rock, which is kind of like buying a bottle of water, but generally you can't just go out and find a fossil. They carry rocks from all over the world, but I did appreciate that they had a large selection of rocks from Utah. I didn't end up buying anything, but it was fun to just wander around and check things out. We visited on a Saturday afternoon in the off season and it was pretty darn crowded. I think there was only one employee working, but he was friendly and asked if we needed assistance twice. read more

OK after a brief stop in Durango I came to pursue my main agenda on this trip to Utah. Of course this is other than just sight-seeing all the many ways red sandstone has formed and eroded and reformed and re-eroded over the past... gee how long has it been now? It must be what, a good 1,500 years or so according to the good Bishop Ussher's calculations. Anyway, this rock shop is one of the most unusual, certainly putting to shame all those others that line the roads in this state. The owner is a successful paleontologist over many decades as well as a rockhound of the first order. I'm hoping to find naturally active quartz that hasn't been cut into balls or pyramids or other artifices. And besides I like fossils of which this individual has found many, one or two even having been named for him. Unfortunately, pretty as these are they're just rocks. Dead to passage, storage or emittance of any energy other than that of basic electromagnetic spectra. Still highly nice to look at but not to recommend for skrying as Peruvian quartz is nothing to contend with. Unfortunately so many feng shui-inspired interior decorators are buying up the stuff without knowing a thing about it. Might just as well buy basic glass balls made at the end of a day from a jar factory's overrun. Much like the way the Village art festival was the province of "artists" selling canvas to match the sofa. Anyway, the fossils are cute. read more

They had antique machines and large blocks of petrified wood outside. Inside they had a large selection of neat low cost minerals. They had friendly service that is important to me. On the one hand, I think you'd do yourself a disservice by NOT stopping in here at least once. It's a fascinating place, and depending on your attention span, there's a lot to see and you could definitely lose yourself in it if you're on vacation time. On the other hand, I don't think I'd ever buy anything here. There's a couple of reasons I say that--the first is that I'm not super into rocks. So if you're a rockhound or a collector or that kind of thing interests you, you might have a different point of view. But for me, that's the first obstacle. The second obstacle is that while I may not be super into rocks, I have been in man a rock shop in my day, because apparently I hang out with a lot of rock shop kind of people, and I have a rough idea of what stuff costs. These days, with the interwebs, you can find a lot cheaper prices on many of the items here. The more "fine" it is, or different, or special, or polished; the more you can expect to pay into their profit margin. For the rougher stuff or more common things, especially the tables outside, you're probably going to be fine forking over a few bucks for a souvenir of your trip to Moab. A lot of stuff is shipped in, so be sure you know which is which is you want a really authentic piece of Moab, and this a fun option to take that home. Walk the aisles, oooh and ahhh, spend some time, read about the owner, and play fetch with their dog. It's a fun little stop if you're in town. read more
