I came here for brunch yesterday, and what a better time to come visit this iconic Miami eatery. MLK serves a mix of southern American and Bahamian flavors, truly representing the original Miami culture. My dish of choice was shrimp and grits, which is a classic that needs no explanation, but suffice to say it was exactly what you would expect from great comfort food. Don't expect anything fancy here, but do expect awesome food, generous portions, good prices, nice decor, friendly service, and the warmth of a true local/neighborhood eatery. I recomendable this place and look forward to my next visit. read more

Walked in and sat down. 30 minutes waiting and no one even bothered to address the table. Waiter addressed neighboring table and didn't even bother. read more

Reason for 3 stars. Food was alright. Nothing special. Waiting can take awhile bc everything is made fresh. My wife was a bit more discontented than I bc her omelet that she thought would have cheese in it only had melted cheese slices on top of it. It is a cheap alternative to everything in town tho and atmosphere was pleasant. Our waitress was very pleasant. read more

Am very glad I found this fun place with good food, but I wouldn't really call it a Soul Food place. Southern, maybe, but not Soul. This is not where you'd go get oxtail, pigs feet, cabbage, collard greens, or cornbread. But, this IS where you'd go get a hearty breakfast, grits, smothered or fried pork chops, wings, fish, chicken and waffles. I had the Georgia sausage, grits, and pancakes. Tried my buddy's steamed fish, which was also very light and flavorful. I'd come back to try the red snapper. My neighbor's smothered chops and wings looked like enormous portions and simply delicious. The guy selling the knockoff Gucci bags at the front door was a nice touch. read more

This is a no frills neighborhood restaurant. They serve down home stick to your bones soul food. From pork chops, smothered chicken wings and sausage and grits; you can find it here. I decided to try the boiled fish and grits, which they only serve on the week-end. For less than $12, you get a huge bowl with potatoes, & fish, all of which was well seasoned with just right amount of kick. Towards the end of the dish, I got a little taste of fishiness, but by that time I was pleasantly full. So if you are on that side of town and hungry, stop by MLK and give them a try. read more

MLK Restaurant - Boiled Fish - Soul Food Near Me - Miami, Florida

The food was pretty good and the people were really nice. Also it's cheap but the quality is good !

After being discouraged by the lack of breakfast options on Miami Beach, hubby and I ventured out to check out MLK before heading to the airport. For $16, we ate so food. Tasted just like my grandmother cooked each plate. I ordered the grits, with eggs, pan sausage and roast. I opted to get a biscuit instead of toast. The waitress brought out two homemade biscuits, with a side of butter and jelly. read more

This is good hood eats! Do not go to MLK with high expectations on great service m. This place is always slammed and only have 3 waitress but you will get your food. They will be nice to you. I recommend patience. The food is always good never had a moment where I didn't like something. It's super cheap great breakfast. Get a lemonade and fruit punch flop! You won't forget it read more

MLK is one of a decreasing number of southern-style breakfast spots in Miami. I'm glad that they are holding on strong even as others disappear. MLK is well known for their down home breakfasts. Staples like hot grits, boiled fish, smoked sausage and chicken wings keep customers like me coming back for more. The grits are cooked to the perfect just-thick consistency with the right amount of salt thrown in the water. Nothing worse than grits cooked in saltless water - you can never add enough salt after the fact. The grits are the framework of a good southern breakfast and MLK does them right. I wish they were served with real butter because the margarine they are served with does not melt, but that's a minor issue. I usually get the fried wings breakfast, which includes grits, eggs and toast. The wings are cooked perfectly, with the right amount of seasoning and a nice crunchy coat. The eggs and toast are standard. I don't come to MLK as often as I'd like. Why? Because this spot is on the smaller side but as popular as they come, it is always packed. You can barely move around, much less get a table. There is always a wait - you're gonna wait for a table, you're gonna wait for the food, you're gonna wait for the check. I'm not always up for all that waiting. The hours here are very limited (they really only serve breakfast and some lunch items, although I think plans may be in the works to start dinner service), parking is available but can get very tight and the coffee needs a lot of work. But I do find myself there ever so often when I want to get a good breakfast while being fully entertained. MLK is kind of like the meeting spot. I always bump into extended members of my family there. My mom bumps into her old highschool classmates. There's a pretty popular gentleman that sells various items at the front of the restaurant (he sometimes takes up valuable table space, but that's neither here nor there). I think that's the huge draw for MLK: If you're from this community, you'll get a hot plate of some stick-to-your-ribs breakfast and some feel-good to start your day off right. Not many places serving up all of that for a reasonable price these days. read more

Shout out to my waitress Miss Kathy! Had the catfish, cheese grits, toast, salmon cakes and an order of fried chicken to go. Don't forget the "flop" half ice tea/lemonade. Delicious.... and cheap! Made me feel like I was back at home I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Miami read more

MLK has the worse customer service. Sad part it's been like that for years. The food is good, but the waitresses that are not behind the counter are horrible. They act like they don't want to be there, they move slow, don't greet you when you walk in. One time I went it was over ten minutes, before I had to say something to get someone's attention read more

This place is always on point, never miss. Pancakes and waffles could be better, a little dry but other than that. On point ! They just don't miss read more

Come here often, especially when they send me on job training conveniently located across the street to the MLK Building in the city. A nice whole in a wall, with authentic soul food, no matter what time of day you come to this location its always jammed packed with customers. The best cooked to order breakfast in my opinion in the city. When I come, I can't always make up my mind on what I want to eat, everything is tasty. But when I do, I ask for the Georgia smoked sausage, grits with a yellow slice of cheese, eggs over medium, and wheat toast, to drink I usually order a Flop (a mixture of fruit punch and lemonade). It could be on the very sweet side, so I order a bottle water to drink afterwards. From what I'm hearing this place has been here since the early 80's. It gives you that old nostalgic diner feel, a lot of wood paneling it kind of reminds me of of my grandmother's Florida room. The menu offers variety from pork chops, fried fish, and liver. Breakfast is served all day till 2pm. It also offers lunch from 11am to 1pm with very few items to order from. It's has to be something about this restaurant that keeps people coming. I love Soul Food, so I'm a fan. read more

Baby when I tell you! This is what I needed in my life after catching a 5 am flight from Houston on 2 hours of sleep. I had the grouper, eggs and grits. My hubby had the chicken and waffles. I have 4 stars cause it's an old restaurant that could use some polishing, but they do offer you the option for dinner wear or plastic wear for your food to. E served in. read more

I had the chicken and waffles and they were absolutely terrible!!! Chicken was raw and waffles were dry.... Never Eating Here AGAIN!!!!

Great soul food restaurant! The boiled fish is the best! Always busy, so get there early.

I have never been to a black owned business with so disorganization but so much credibility in its surroundings neighborhood. My first visit and I was left very upset displeased and disgusted by the lack of professionalism and urgency. I am very disappointed. I am also convinced that the good views are written by close friends and family because every customer inside of restaurant was not happy with the service or the food. read more

We noticed alot of traffic in and out of this place. And since we love local eats when we travel, it was a must. When we walked in, we were greeted by all the staff at the front counter. That was really reassuring. The menu is not huge, but there are so many good choices. I ordered the Corn Beef Hash with Grits, Eggs, and Toast. Hubby had the Fried Pork Chops with Eggs and Home Fries. We also order Half and Half (Tea & Lemonade) The food was cooked to order and smelled soooooooo good. We couldn't wait until we got back to our hotel room. About a 15 minute drive away. My food was great. There was one exception, hence the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. There were large egg shells in my scrambled eggs. There were three instances where I was pulling shells out of my mouth. That was the only issue. Hubby loved his food as well. Very well seasoned Chops and Potatoes. And that Half and Half was so good and sweet!! We will definitely keep this place on our radar for future trips to MIA! read more

Decided to visit this spot after seeing it in Anthony Bourdain's show! My husband and I visit often but today was the absolute worse!!!!!!! After waiting 20 mins we asked the table buser who's section is this, he pointed to an older lady with a glittery hat but grabbed another young lady to help us. She moved us to her section and took our order. After 10 mins we finally received our coffee, 5 mins later we received our water! 35 mins later we finally received our food! I should've asked for the check then, we waited 10 minutes for her to return with the bill! I finally got up to go to the busy counter asked someone for my check she asked who helped us I pointed her out she said it was LaQuita's section. Wasted another 12 minutes just to pay! The food is good but the service is horrible, I'm over it and won't be returning! read more

Perhaps one of the warmest vibes I have felt in a very long time at a Miami restaurant. The slogan on the menu reads that every customer is treated as a friend of the family, and it truly feels like you just stumbled upon a family party. Service can be a little on the leisurely side, but it is anything but negligent. Just relax. This isn't McDonald's. Put down your cell phone and enjoy a little piece of of the real Miami. The waitress will get to you eventually and will make sure you are well taken care of. The food is all cooked to order, and if you forget that detail, there is a big poster reminding you of it. Again, just relax. If you don't get grits here, you are an idiot. They are the best I have ever had anywhere in the country (including the "Deep South"). Fried catfish is extra flavorful with a super crunchy crust. Whoever cooks the eggs here should teach everyone else in Miami - they are absolutely perfect and cooked EXACTLY how you ask for them. Iced tea is nice and sweet, just how it should be. This really is on my list of best breakfasts in Miami and definitely somewhere I will be going back to...hopefully soon. I wish there were more places like this dedicated to affordable, no-fuss comfort food where the cook really cares about everything that gets put on a plate. read more

Hands down the best breakfast spot in Miami. I have eaten everywhere and if you're in the mood for some delicious diner food- this is the place to be. The chicken and waffles was so great, better than Sylvia's in Harlem. The service was incredibly welcoming and had a real family feel to it. Mrs Goldie came by our table before we left to ask how the food was- and I told her, it tastes like it was just made. And sure enough behind me was a sign on the wall I'd missed- "everything cooked to order." So good. So awesome. New spot. Love it! read more

Thoroughly enjoyed the southern cuisine and hospitality at MLK. Get there before 2pm or you'll miss out on a diamond in the rough. Catfish, grouper, grits, and homefries were phenomenal. Our plates were clean!! Thanks Ms. Kathy for serving us with a smile and treating us like family. Make your way over to MLK if you're in the area or visiting. read more

I woke up in Las Vegas today, wishing I could wake back up in Miami so I can get me some MLK BEST breakfast soul food I've EVER tasted, I mean EVER. This place is in the heart of the ROUGHEST neighborhood in Miami, Liberty City. Shady. So lock your doors as you go grab your food. Small, old, Rinky Dink building that could use loads of renovation. But, none of this effects the quality of food. It literally tastes like your Grandmother is back there making your food exactly how you like it. Seasoned to perfection. The staff are all like family. They greet me by name and everyone is so welcoming. It's all African American staffed and they are beyond professional with their business. I give MLK amazing props for staying professional and quality kept with so many doubters. read more

MLK Restaurant - Chicken and waffles ... - Soul Food Near Me - Miami, Florida

The food is delicious. I enjoyed the fried pork chops smothered in sautéed onions, grits sprinkled with cheese, toast, and eggs. The food came out-of-the-pan-pipping hot! Not warm as if it were sitting in a steam table and the food quickly cools once it's in front of you. It stayed hot until the last bite. The food was cooked to order and it tasted that way. Reminded me of when my family used to get together and had a cookout. The prices are unbeatable, my meal came to a total of $11 which included coffee and that was on the more expensive side of their offerings. I advise you not to come in large groups of 5 or more because the place isn't that big. And since the food is cooked to order it can take some time for it to be brought out. But if you have patience and an appetite this is the place to be for breakfast. No gimmicks, just good food. read more
