When I spoke to the owner, he said he would not charge me, well he shouldn't since I asked that it not be cut several days in advance. When I spoke to him he told me that it is confusing because we change out mind every week. First, that is not true we did it twice, and second, we are paying for the service and can tell them when we do not want it cut. He told me if we do not want it cut, we should tell them the day that they are coming. Now how do I always know when they are coming when there is rain, etc? In addition, when his brother was doing the mowing, he would actually skip us when our lawn looked like this. Once he skipped us and the owner charged us anyway. I expect my landscaper to know when not to cut, but I always text so they can plan their schedule and crew. When I told him we were discontinuing his service his text back was that he did not need my business anyway. The below pictures are my lawn before they came to cut it. We had asked them not to in a text on Saturday, and they cut in anyway.

The new patio looks good enough but the whole thing is too high relative to the house, the top of the pavers are the same height as the top of the door saddle. I can not install a storm door because it will hit a floor mat. I had asked Manuel to make the patio about an inch below the door saddles during the estimate and again before the pavers were installed, he agreed but didn't do it. It's discouraging, the patio looks nice but it's the wrong height. Now I face the dilemma of living with it or having another contractor rip it out and install it at the right height.

And I'll be honest, the handyman we usually work with was booked up for months. It actually seemed like all the handymen were. (There's a pandemic out there, and apparently everyone's taking the time to fix up their home.) Marty let me know that he was busy too, and that he was taking some time to spend with his family (and you can't begrudge someone being a good family man). But he was willing to do the work when he was free, which is all we could ask. I also appreciate how he operates. He'd prefer to get photos/video of what the problems were so he can give you an accurate estimate before even setting foot in the place (saves everyone time), and so he can show up with all the materials necessary (saves everyone time and money). His website is also pretty comprehensive; it lists all the things he does, who he is, how he works, and shows work he's done. That's how I found him, and I'm glad I did. I also like that he's willing to admit what he can't do (in our case, it was more involved electrical work). Some folks claim they can do anything, and will do a less than ideal job; Marty will just recommend someone who he's worked with and can vouch for. In any case, we had a few odd jobs that needed doing, and once Marty let me know when he was available, he was on time, and efficient. He did quality work. I thought the pricing was fair for his time and labor, and I would hire him again. That's really all you can ask from a handyman.

I was pleased to learn about Marty and HV Handyman from a Yelp review, and even more pleased that the review was written by someone from Yelp I actually know in person. Marty is professional yet casual, a nice combination. He was always quick to get back to me when I contacted him in advance of the work, always in less than 24 hours. When I initially sent him a description of the work and a photo, he got back right away with his estimates of time and materials, and cost. Along the way, he was proactive when it came to things unexpected or little adds. For example, he discovered rodent damage on some of my electrical wires, and he immediately offered to take care of that. Within an hour, he had gone and returned to the local Home Depot with the extra materials to address the issue, and the add-in to the overall cost was again reasonable. He did 99% of the cleanup as well, leaving me with about 5 minutes of work to wipe off some dust after he completed the spackling, sanding, and painting. Marty also doesn't over-book, and he is again up front with what he can and cannot do. I've already discussed another project or two I'd like him to tackle once warmer weather has returned. I only hope he hasn't been swamped with additional work requests based on positive word-of-mouth and word-of-Yelp.

"A friend recommended ML Landscaping to us. Our first experience was fall cleanup in 2013. We had recently moved into our home and were overwhelmed by the mountain of leaves that fell from our trees. Mark and his team showed up and by the end of the day the yard was spotless. What would have taken my husband and me days to clean up, Mark took care of efficiently! We were thrilled and hired him the following spring to upgrade our side yard patio. Another task completed and the outcome a happy customer once more. The spring of 2015 Mark brought in heavy equipment to remove an old rock wall that had seem better times. I had been considering paving my driveway for years, and when I finally built a garage and added a…read moresecond driveway, I knew now was the time. I had seen signs for The Paving Company around and the work looked good, so I figured I would give them a shot. I was worried about the cost -- I had a lot of ground to cover -- but reached out and left a message on a Friday afternoon. I expected to hear back on Monday, but Alex called early Friday evening and offered to stop by 1pm on Saturday. I had 3 distinct areas that needed to be tied together -- an existing 35 yr old gravel driveway, a new 1 yr old gravel driveway, and a new "connection" between the two, to effectively make a "horseshoe" as viewed from the road. Alex did his measurements and quoted a number around 75% what I had estimated (and I always under-estimate). Based on existing work I had seen, I said "let's go for it." On Monday I thought they were going to just drop off some equipment, but he was actually able to get started! They excavated for the new driveway connection, and finding organic material there that wouldn't make for a good base, they ended up digging down 2-3 feet. They let it dry for a day and then filled it up with quality base material. No extra charge for the extra work and fill needed, but since we were under my budget I asked if he could put down and compact item 4 gravel next to the garage as an "overflow" area, and he agreed. On Wednesday they were there to put down item 4 over the entire area, and on Thursday they paved it all in about 4 hours. I could see the effort they put in throughout the entire process, and I was able to go from phone call to paved driveway in less than a week. I am a perfectionist (which I understand can make me difficult to work for ;-) and a DIYer for most things because my experience has been that contractors just don't always do things to my standards. But Alex and I were on the same page throughout this process, and I could see the pride in his face for the work he had done. And as I look at it now, it came out even better than I had imagined. My wife thinks I'm crazy to get so excited about a driveway, but I've literally waited 35 years for this dream garage and driveway. I'm very happy that Alex and his team were able to make it happen, I could not give a higher recommendation. Next step is landscaping, I hope I have as much success there :-)
