I came here for 2 reasons: 1) because I wanted to try a new place for Sushi, 2) I wanted to add to my UPromise account. I brought my bride, my daughter and the in-laws. The rest of my party didn't care much for the place, but I thought it to be a pretty solid find for sushi. We had a table in the corner and I watched as a train pulled color coded sushi dishes around the sushi bar. The place seemed to cater to young adults moreso than families but that wasn't an issue for me. The staff was taking care of us and that was all that mattered. I ordered a variety of rolls (my favorite being yellow tuna), of course, and the sushi was good, not great, but pretty daggone good. My bride ordered chicken and while she thought it was okay, she made it clear to me it wouldn't hurt her feelings if we never came back to the place. My in-laws had the same sentiment, and I'm not sure what the turn off was for any of them. read more

Some of the best Japanese I've had in a long time. Ordered a Golden Geisha martini (had apple vodka, champagne, and elderberry liquer, I think...) which was strong and flavorful. The spicy beef basil (tender and juicy with delicious vegetables) and miso soup were both on point. Our server Vonny was fantastic - prompt and knowledgeable about the menu, as well as shared information about great specials on drinks and sushi throughout the week. Sushi is not really my thing so my opinion will automatically be biased, but this place is decent. They have a sushi train that's pretty awesome but you don't know what you're getting. I can't eat shellfish so for me, it was a gamble. The "dynamite" roll I ordered was quite delicious, just as spicy as I needed. My entree was hibachi chicken. It wasn't anything special, but it was cooked to perfection with the veggies. Dessert was pretty good. I tried the strawberry shortcake cheesecake and the fried cheesecake with ice cream. I ordered sushi regular and my husband got shrimp tempura. For shrimp tempura, tempura wasn't crunch at all and shrimp was dried out. Sushi was too thick and some of them had seaweed smudged on it. While I was eating, I was hoping that I don't get sick. We visited 2 times. The management here is horrendous. We waited outside to be seated.... 40 minutes. No one came out for us, no one texted when they said they would. All while tables were open. When we finally got a server to set us she just said "sorry, its not my fault". This was our 2nd visit here. On our first visit we never even got seated. Instead, I watched a couple in front of us go through the EXACT same thing with their server. They had waited, been neglected, been ignored, and then told "oh that's too bad but it's not my fault" obviously Mizu has a management issue and not a single thing has or was offered to be done to fix it. Here is one of those restaurants that would get 4 stars all day long IF the service was even remotely good. It was terrible. Awful. Missing. Our service took forever for each step in the process and we were her only table or one of two. I think completing her side work and getting the heck out of there was her main concern. She forgot this and that and to bring us a box and never brought us a check. I appreciate the hostess being kind enough to step outside of her job and bring us what we needed. The food was pretty good. I had a bento box and it was more than enough food to take home for lunch the next day. Mizu is totally a good solid 3-star sushi restaurant. They're the only(?) place around that I've seen that has a sushi bar with the conveyor belt-type thing. You serve yourself and each plate is color coded as to it's price - which are easy to recognized based on the chart. The other cute thing is that the "conveyor belt" here isn't just a belt - it's a toy train! I thought it was totally cute. We didn't sit at the bar, but the other guests sitting there seemed to be enjoying themselves. I also can't comment on their food other than sushi, but I think they have tepanyaki (sp?) and other japanese selections. Anyway, here's how my rating breaks down: Service: 4 stars, if not 4.5. Our waitress was prompt and friendly. She didn't speak English that well, but we communicated just fine and she was peppy and very nice. Sushi: The sushi was good - the only thing I didn't like about the selection was that a lot of the rolls were baked or made with tempura-ed something. It kind of limited my selection because I was in the mood for raw, but I can see how someone who wanted sushi roll-style food but wasn't into the uncooked stuff would love it. Anyway, what I did have was good. Price/Value: 2 stars - the only real drawback to this place. My fiancee and I had 4 rolls (2 6-peice rolls and 2 8-peice rolls), 2 pieces of nigiri ebi and 2 sweet teas and the bill was around $45 before tip. The rolls were rather small over all and at other sushi places in our area you get a lot more bang for your buck in terms of rolls size and price. Also, both Fine and Sake House also have a least occasional BOGO free sushi roll specials, which Mizu doesn't have. At Sake House if you order 2 rolls, you get soup and salad for free. So comparatively, the value just isn't there even though it's not really that expensive and the sushi is ok. read more

I have been going to Mizu since the day they first opened, and in recent visits, (especially this evening's take out) I have noticed two trends: prices have gone up, and quality of food and service have drastically declined. See attached photo for just one example of this evening's old and rotting avocado that they saw fit to include in my California roll. Very concerning that a chef who handles and serves raw fish saw this brown avocado and thought "yes, why not serve that to someone." $60 for take out for a family of 3, and they couldn't even include chop sticks for us to eat with. It seems that quality control has gone out the window since the expansion of the restaurant, and long time loyal customers must now get the bad end of that deal. read more

This could be my new favorite sushi spot considering the distance from my home; it's closer than Waraji. I ordered the fatty tuna, yellow tail, and salmon sashimi; they were very fresh so fresh it literally melted in my mouth, I can't say that about Waraji's. The rainbow roll was just as fresh and tasty. The only thing I didn't like was the Toro, it was way too chewy and fishy even for a sashimi-lover like me. I also wasn't a big fan of the volcano roll, it's a mayonaise-baked roll, that didn't meet the standard. Other that those two gripes, I'll definitely be back for the fresh fish and tasty rolls. My friend and I thought our waiter was super attentive and pleasant. Also it's quite pricey and I hope that they will implement the BOGO deal soon so that would come back sooner. After reading all the reviews on here I have a feeling I may have come at a bad time, but who knows. I do happen to eat a lot of sushi and have high expectations - it's my favorite food and I have easy access to it since I live in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles. That being said, this review is based solely on the sushi and not their entrees. The salmon tasted stale and you don't get that buttery melt in your mouth feeling that normally ensues. I could immediately tell that the uni wasn't fresh due to its darker than usual appearance and sure enough it tasted as it looked. The other fish tasted fine, nothing spectacular. I also had a spicy tuna cut roll and all they did was roll up some tuna chunks with spicy mayo, whereas a real spicy tuna roll should be ground up tuna mixed up with the sauce/seasoning and sometimes scallions. I know I already mentioned that this review is based on the sushi alone, but someone at our table did order a scallop and something (I think it was shrimp) combo, and she said that the scallops didn't taste good at all. She showed me a piece that was already cut open and it looked like it was overdone and rubbery, and I'm very familiar with the way scallop should look when done properly because I make it almost every week at home. I would give this place a 2.5, but since Yelp won't allow it I'll bump it up to 3 because service was prompt and friendly. read more

Beware though-- if you're sensitive to spice, you might want to ask them to go easy on the dressing as it was a bit spicier than what I'm used to. Let me start off by saying that I am not a sushi guy. I am a steak guy. And this place has both. I have been to Mizu multiple times and in the early days, I would only get steak. It was AWESOME. I finally decided to get "crazy" and try some of the sushi because a friend kept bugging me to do so. . .and guess what?!? I love it. Love it. Love it. But, I say that with a caveat. I don't have anything to compare it to. I have not ventured out and tried another sushi place anywhere. With that being said, I have taken other people who know sushi (lived in NYC and lived in Miami) and they LOVE this place as well. So, if you only like steak this place has a great steak.
