Reference this review and request her honest consultation for your intended style before getting a cut; I can almost guarantee you will be amazed by the end result. However, what ultimately made me leave a review was what Ai did NOT do. It was the fact that she advised me NOT to get a perm that day. Mizu, Modern day Seinfeld's 'Soup Nazi' No services for you!!! Part 1: A few years ago, my personal friends connected me with a colorist who happens to be on staff at Mizu. While I didn't particularly care for the salon, it was near my house and I was very fond of the colorist. I had gotten keratin many times at other places until one day I decided to try the keratin treatment that Mizu offered and highly recommended. When the LASIO keratin treatment caused a severe allergic reaction, I contacted the manufacturer directly only to realize that Mizu didn't follow the manufacturer guidelines for applying the product safely. Mizu skipped the last required step of the process and did not wash the product out of my hair. My experience matched that of another review posted here a few years prior to my very own experience. At mizu I was advised to wash my hair 2-3 days post treatment for better results. However, according to LASIO, their product should be washed off at the time of treatment and should never be left on longer than 24 hours. LASIO sincerely apologized, offered to reimburse my unforeseen medical expenses and suggested re-training the staff at Mizu on how to properly and safely perform the treatment. Mizu, on the other hand, replied to my email with a warning instead of an apology: if I choose to get a refund for my services (which I didn't ask for in the first place), I will not be able to continue seeing my colorist and will be removed as a client. For context, I have been a color client at Mizu for a few years prior to booking a keratin appointment with a keratin stylist and specialist. After experiencing such a blackmail attempt I decided to request a refund and moved on to find a better alternative at a different salon. Part 2: Months later I learned that my incident wasn't an isolated case but rather the standard operating procedure at Mizu. When other clients addressed poor services to Mizu's management, they were similarly banned from the salon, instead of receiving an apology (at the least!). Part 3: My daughter also became a client of Mizu's shortly after I began seeing their colorist. Months after I was banned for voicing my concern about the dangerous service that I received, my daughter was supposed to visit Mizu for a color appointment. Her appointment was cancelled by Mizu via text on the grounds that we share the last name and therefore she is not welcome to return to the salon. Apparently just being related to me, a former Mizu client who received shockingly poor services from Mizu in the past, puts my independent adult daughter on Mizu's blacklist. read more

My name is Sandy and I've been a follower of Damian Santiago since my cousin Diane gave me a gift of a haircut by Damian many years ago. I am completely spoiled and cannot ever imagine not going to Mizu. People actually stop me in the street to ask where I got my gorgeous haircut. I love lovely hair and notice womens haircuts. The people who work at this shop are exceptional.Everyone is so polite and friendly.Their professionalism is so appreciated. I have never walked out of this shop unhappy when Damian cut and styled my hair He is a genius as far as I'm concerned. He then handed me off to an unlicensed-seeming man who was coughing on me, repeatedly stepping outside to smoke, and smelled so bad I had to hold my breath -- I've filed a complaint about this with the New York Department of State's cosmetology board. This man got bleach all over my Longchamp bag and I received not so much as an apology. I waited 45 minutes past my appointment time. I felt completely forced into letting this stranger do my color and was given no real choice. When the bill came, Albert was nowhere to be found -- and the bill listed him as having performed all services, which was a lie. It also included services I never received. My hair came out gray. I get the same blonde highlights every time. When I raised it, Albert told me to "wait a few days and get used to it." The bill was significantly higher than my agreed-upon price -- for the exact same service I always get. Nothing was different, and yet I was wildly overcharged. I was the last person in the salon on a Sunday night, rushed, uncomfortable, told I could not leave until I paid -- so I overpaid just to get out of there. This is the same stylist who previously cut my bob uneven and blamed it on forgetting his contacts. I trusted Albert. He completely took advantage of that trust. Protect yourself. One day in 1997, while leafing through the latest issue of Vogue at the dentist's office, I read an…read morearticle about New York City hair stylists who specialize in long hair. I had been on a mission at the time to find a new hair stylist, and one young man in the story - a stylist for the models on fashion shoots - stood out and I wrote down his name and the name of the salon. Assuming that the salon would be too upscale for the young me I foolishly name-dropped to get an appointment, hoping I could could convince anybody that I was somebody... And that is how I first met Kieran McKenna at the John Frieda Salon, who as it turned out, was about as down-to-earth as they come. And delightfully British. And to this day I would never let anybody else ever touch my hair. Kieran even did my hair at my wedding! -- And - as I love to tell it - then he did my hair for my divorce! ;) Before I met Kieran I was so sick of telling hair stylists what I wanted and then walking out of a salon with my long hair chopped off - when I worked so hard trying to grow it, and with a hair style that was not at all what I had asked for. What then developed was a twenty-one year relationship, as I followed Kieran over two decades from salon to salon, using the colorists that he recommended at each salon and always enjoying having my hair cut and styled by Kieran; the consummate professional. When I arrived for my first appointment with Kieran, back in 1997, my hair was battered, fried and frizzled. It was embarrassing. But rather than blame me, my last stylist, the family dog, etc. as every other stylist always did, I remember Kieran dispensed with blame, saying "You work hard. Relax, it will be fine." And it was better than fine. It was beautiful. He always makes you feel relaxed, comfortable, and in the hands of a professional. From that day on I had the long silky locks of my dreams and - believe me - I follow every direction Kieran gives me as far as the care of my hair and the products to use. And it shows. Watching him in action, with his Louis Vuitton box of brushes and combs, his scissors and lotions, is like watching a maestro at work. He never finishes until the haircut is perfect. And while you are in the chair there is no-one else in the room for him. You are the most important person and you have his undivided attention. The people who work for him love him, his energy is boundless and FINALLY there is a Kieran McKenna Salon! What a long road. These days Kieran rarely, if ever, mentions it but I remember back then how he had come here from England not too long before I met him, with John Frieda, and how he was instrumental in developing all of the hair care products with John Frieda that are now known and loved by millions. Of course back then, nobody had ever heard of John Frieda or Kieran McKenna. Now, nobody knows hair the way Kieran does - and combines it with such a winning personality. His haircuts, his instructions, and his advice have given me hair that constantly gets compliments and I just hope he doesn't become so popular that I can't get appointments anymore!

My stylist's name was Toki. His service went above and beyond- he was so polite and respectful. The treatment started with a long scalp massage with some type of product. Very relaxing. There was another treatment at the shampoo bowl. I also booked a blowout, and Toki did a great job- I loved how my hair looked afterward! The shop is pretty small and I think by appointment only. There's really only room for about 3 customers in there at a time. I was highly impressed with the service and would definitely recommend them!

The hairdresser at the salon severely damaged my hair many years ago. I am a black woman who had a relaxer applied to my hair and a permanent color. The damage was specifically in the back/nape of my head. I was traumatized. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to afford a lawyer at the time to seek compensation. I do remember calling the salon about the damage and I was told that I could come back in for conditioning. Ha, Ha, conditioning??? Conditioning was not going to help or bring back the amount of hair I lost The salon was recommended to me only to have them scar me mentally and damage my hair follicles for life. I am still trying everything to grow the hair back fully In the bottom back of my head. I'm taking minoxidil, multivitamins, and applying a natural water based oil. I don't recommend this salon for black women who use chemicals. Sincerely, MD Traumatized & Disappointed

However, my hair cutter at Evolve did an excellent job at containing all the frizz, while also making it fall really nicely. I will definitely be back for a future haircut as I trust this beauty salon to cut and style my hair to perfection. Come to Evolve!

I have been on the look for someone to help with my color after my regular hair stylist…read moreunfortunately lost her spot. I'm hoping after covid, I can return to her, but in the mean time I'm on the hunt. I was going to another spot for all my coloring needs, but I had a relatively poor experience where the hair stylist went a little too crazy with my hair (went from getting a balayage to all of a sudden having red hair and balayage) and charged me for it all... after having me wait for an hour for the salon to open bc their morning person was MIA. I'm clearly still not over that... haha ANYWAYS I came upon Ambiance on my morning "commute" (walking around various blocks and back to my apartment) and thought - huh this places looks cute/nice and exactly my speed. I looked at their reviews and all seemed good and figured why not take a chance and see if they can help me. Worst case - I get another crazy color job and find a new place - being remote for work - I don't see many people anyways haha. I called and they were able to get me in at the time I requested with Rada who is a colorist there. She was AMAZING. I didn't have to tell her much except what I wanted and was going for and she went to town giving me back my base hair color and the highlights that got lost in the mix. Normally at my other hair appointments (with the crazy color job) - they would take 4 hours + (not kidding), she took a little less than 2! I was SO relieved to find somewhere & someone that's a bit closer to home who can help a girl out. All in all wonderful experience and VERY happy to have found my new spot for color in the neighborhood. :)

I figured I would give them another chance. I booked the "happy hour" $35 blowout that they have advertised everywhere. This is the first scam. The blowout was terrible. The stylist was super rough on my hair and left the brushes in my hair while she was blowing it, which was weighing down my hair painfully. But whatever, I thought, ok at least it's only $35. Then I went to pay and they were charging me double. I asked why and they said because I had extensions. I said ok but it didn't say anything about that when I booked. They were charging me two prices for the extensions and when I tried to understand why, they both started screaming at me and being incredibly rude. Calling me names and saying I was crazy for thinking I could get a blowout in NYC for $35. I said, that's why I came here! Because you advertise this price like crazy!! They were insulting my hair and just being absurdly unprofessional and rude. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS PLACE!! Bad people who don't understand business, customer service, or just basic human decency. Or how to do hair, which seems important.
