Every time I ask her to do something, she will talk me through the process and go over prices before we get started. Angela always makes me feel good about my hair. She did a base color, bayalage, and a treatment with haircut. Look at all the foils she used! I have a lot of hair but it's very fine. She always makes sure my hair is taken care of so there is no damage. When I was getting my hair rinsed, Angela ran out and got me a birthday cake. I've been a loyal customer at this hair salon since the beginning of the pandemic. I'm the type of customer who treats everyone with respect as soon as I walk in. On top of that, I always offer the employees if they want a drink or something that I'm always willing to buy for them nearby. I also always provide a generous tip to my wonderful hairstylist, Shelly & the other person who assists with washing & conditioning my hair. Back in October 2024, I received multiple text notifications from KolorBar mentioning a 20% discount off balayage or highlights. When I called to schedule my yearly visit to get the services that I usually get, the receptionist who picked up the phone set up an appointment for me. The receptionist also mentioned the 20% discount to me herself. I informed her that I'm not a new client & that I've been getting services here for a few years. She told me that she was aware & the discount applies for all customers. When I spoke with my hairstylist to get a quote for all of the services I intended to get done, she gave me the total & also mentioned to me about the 20% discount that KolorBar was offering during the month of October. Mind you, I never mentioned the 20% off to anyone. Their own employees were the ones to mention the discount to me so of course I agreed to take advantage of it because this hair salon increases their prices every few months it seems. I called the hair salon to reschedule my appointment since an emergency came up. I asked to speak with Melodi since she knows me well. She's one of the managers of the hair salon. When Melodi got on the phone, she informed me that the 20% off discount is only for new customers. How is the promotional offer of 20% off only for new customers when the multiple text notifications I received mentioned nothing about it only being for new customers? How come the receptionist never mentioned to me that the 20% off only applied to new customers when I myself informed her that I'm a returning customer? On top of that, Shelly who is my hairstylist also mentioned the 20% off discount to me herself knowing that I'm a long time customer? When I explained this to Melodi, she made the excuse that their texts had "accidentally" sent that when it was only intended for new clients. She also said that the receptionist who answered the phone was new & only there temporarily. Melodi seems to have an excuse for everything. But she forgot to give an excuse for Shelly mentioning the discount to me. Then, Melodi indicated that I have "a lot of hair that's really coarse & thick" so it made me realize that they were purposely targeting me. They basically were intentionally not trying to offer me the 20% discount just because of my hair's texture. They basically discriminate & try to take advantage of clients who have long hair that's coarse & thick. How ridiculous is that. I requested to speak to the owner multiple times & nobody ever got back to me. There's two owners to this hair salon & I asked to speak to either one directly because I wanted to file a complaint. What they did is not right. Little do they know that I got many businesses shut down & this business could easily be next if I want to do the same. Don't play with me & definitely do NOT try me because I ain't the one. I know for a fact you guys don't get clients like myself often; the ones who offer drinks & food, along with providing a generous tip to the hairstylist & assistant. Disgusting establishment with unprofessional employees (Melodi). The fact that you guys treat your most loyal & sweetest client like this is truly disappointing. Came here for highlights and toner on my roots as a blonde and the Italian male hairstylist completely ruined my color. After putting in the time to do full highlights, the bleach was rubbed into my ENTIRE hair in the sink for a full 5-10min before getting rinsed off, completely frying my hair. The hair was so yellow and uneven after the first session, I dropped my jaw as he was drying it and I almost cried. He offered to correct it if I came back, so I came back after 2 days. That only made it worse because now the hair was not just yellow in places, but also silver/blue (see picture). I expressed my concern that I didn't like it and the response from the people in the salon was to "go home and wash it and see if maybe some toner/purple comes back out" (???). I shouldn't have to leave the salon to go home and fix things myself. And no, even after washing it with clarifying shampoo at home, the color was bad. The front desk tried to put blame on me for "going to a new hairstylist" and not staying with the same one every time I get my highlights done. I'm sorry what? I called to get a refund, as I still paid the full price AND left a tip because I still respect the stylist's time, and once again the salon tried to blame me for "having yellow hair" when I came in for the highlights. I literally came to KOLORBAR to FIX my color, that's the whole reason for a color salon visit?? I was going from blonde to blonde, it's really not that difficult. They said they could only give me 50% refund because the hairstylist "tried his best". This sucks because I've been coming to Kolorbar for 6 years and haven't had any issues before, having several of their stylists do my hair over the years. Some stylists here are still wonderful and so talented (shoutout Angela and Roxana!) but unfortunately I will not be returning because of how the salon handled this issue. This past Monday, I was visiting NYC on my way up the East Coast for my brother's wedding- and I realized that I really needed to get my roots done before they were immortalized in family pictures. Now, I'm very protective over my hair because I trust my stylist back in California with my life. But I really needed my roots done. I am SO SO SO happy that I found Kolorbar! My stylist was great and matched my natural hair color perfectly. She was so sweet and even though a blow out wasn't included with the root touch up, she still offered to smooth my naturally curly and frizzy hair out. I do wish that this salon included blow outs (with very basic styling) with color services, but otherwise, their prices are fair for NYC. Then that person also could not fix it for some reason. I don't know what the problem is, but avoid this place. being completely honest: this was terrible. to be fair, the hair washer was really nice and washed my hair really soothingly and in the end the color was good enough (not exactly what i asked for), however, the ends definitely don't justify the means. the turkish man gave me a buzzcut, bleach, and color. from the beginning, i was skeptical and uneasy. i waited 15 minutes in the salon chair before anything even happened and when he was cutting my hair: 1. the clippers died immediately 2. he nicked my ear and never acknowledged it 3. he lined up the back of my head crookedly when it came to the bleach, he definitely left it in for too long. it burned my head so much but he never asked me how i was. he roughly combed the bleach through my hair which scraped my scalp so the bleach was sitting on my scalp for almost an hour. i definitely sustained chemical burns. the entire time i was skeptical and scared about the hair color. i waited a total of about 25 minutes because it took so long for him to get the right color (you'd expect it to be easy hence the name of the place) overall, i wasted my time, money, and health of my hair. i don't recommend this to anyone who wants to color their hair. read more

This is one of the most stressful things about moving, hands down. Good hair can make you feel confident and ready to take on the world. Bad hair is like wearing a dress you hate, every day. You visit several places that are well-reviewed and within your comfort level. But there's just something not quite right about any of them. You don't like the color, you don't like the cut, something is just off. Especially for the price (NYC = WTF?). Disappointed, disheartened, you have the courage and strength to try one more place. You wait anxiously while foils are applied, and then through the shampoo. You hold your breath as the stylist takes you back to the mirror and... If your stylist is Sabina your worries are over. This lady is a magician. I was nervous as hell to try yet another stylist for my highlights, all of whom got the look wrong. She understood my concerns and understood what would work well with my hair and skin tone. For reference, I have naturally dark blonde hair and fair skin (when I don't tan). I Most of my previous stylists tried to create some golden blonde abomination which became brassy within a couple of weeks. One of them actually bleached me so that I looked like that lady from the band Roxette. Picture a female Billy Idol. That is not what I was going for! Sabina was having none of that. She took charged, assessed the situation, and immediately corrected the mistakes. In a city like NYC, you can and should expect to pay a lot for services like this, but I've found that Kolorbar is more than reasonable, especially for the area. I walk out with half-head highlights and a haircut for less than $200. That's a damn bargain anymore. Remember, Sabina. Not Sabrina. I've been going to Kolorbar for a few years now, and was so excited to finally find a salon that did a good job with my hair after searching for years. I don't make appointments for specific stylists, just for whoever has availability. In April, I had the unfortunate luck of being stuck with Valrie. I walked in with my hair in braids and immediately got a dirty look from the receptionist. She brought me over to Valrie, who couldn't have been less thrilled to have a client with curly, thick hair. This is a common reaction to me - PSA, if you don't know how to cut curly hair, DON'T BE A HAIR STYLIST. I confirmed that I was booked for a full head balayage and also needed a cut and color. This woman, no hello, no "hi, my name is _," or "can I get you something to drink?" starts with "you have a lot of greys. i need to color these and THEN do balayage." Her first instinct was to tell me (27) how many grey hairs I have. I add blonde to my hair, why would I pay to dye my roots dark brown just to put blonde over it??? I also couldn't care LESS about having a few grey hairs (is 7 strands "a lot" these days?) Now, I've been dyeing my hair blonde since I was 17. This ***** stood there and condescendingly explained what balayage is, and how I have to pay for toner and said to me "it's very expensive, I don't know if you can afford it." literally those exact words. Shocked, I responded "yeah, I know, I've been here before many times." She argued with me about what treatments to do for TEN MINUTES before she started and accused me of not being able to afford the visit THREE. TIMES. I wish I had gotten up and left. Once she finally started, she was pouting about having to do her job and didn't speak to me for about an hour. When she finally did, she asked what I do for a living. I told her I work in sales at a jewelry company. NOW she wanted to be all buddy buddy, and literally asked me to bring her jewelry next time I came in. I told her it was costume jewelry, and she goes "FYI, pearls are my favorite." The color application was the hardest anyone has ever pulled my hair, and I have two siblings. They sprayed my entire face and neck with water when washing my hair. Then when she started to cut and I said "I like the length, I just want the dead ends cut off," she replied "oh don't EVER say that to someone, you'll walk out of here with no hair. You have to tell me how much you want off." Like... you really don't know how much to cut to fix my dead ends? Spoiler: she didn't. After she finished drying my hair (also very roughly) and I went to pay, she tells me she doesn't have venmo or cash app and I had to go find an ATM and come back with a cash tip. LMAO, okay sweetie. I know that I have difficult hair. I live with it. So when I go to a salon, I usually tip around 30-40% because I know it's a lot of work. Even when I had rude stylists in the past. But Valrie, here's a tip: you don't get an extra tip for being rude AND bad at your job. Please find a new career. This salon was great! Definitely ask for Val. She did Balyage, cut and styled for a wedding. Picture from that night - about 7 hours after I got it done and it still lasted! I got so many compliments from everyone. She's amazing at her job - she picked my color and it turned out perfect! Will 100% go back for her. My only complaint was when making the appointment, I told them I had a groupon and asked how much a cut/blow dry would be and they priced me at $55. It ended up being close to $80. Trying out this new salon because it was in my neighborhood and they had some good specials. When I called they said I needed to come in for a consultation since I was a new client. I knew I needed a color so I asked if we also color right after the consult and she said "yes, of course" and we booked a time to allow for it. The stylist was sweet but 1) only thought I was coming in for a consult- she didn't expect me to have my hair done so they had to do some rejiggering of the schedule (which they did and she was kind and able to do my balayage) but 2) I just don't think she had the talent to do my hair. It came out SO dark and had a very strong line where she added color to the roots that even she said it needed to be done over. Even after the do-over the color was just not well blended or good looking. I had 4 inches of dark brown hair then the rest was very blonde. They all kind of looked at me when I walked by like "well thats not right" but we weren't able to do anything more that afternoon. The woman in the chair next to mine seemed to be better skilled and her customer looked amazing. I would say try it out but proceed with caution. read more

I'm sure we can all understand finding your hair "person" is a commitment. I also have red hair and am particular about the shade. (Not too red, no burgundy, professional, as natural looking as possible and hip). Visiting friends in the area I walked past Kolorbar. It looked clean and busy. Later, searching on Yelp Kolorbar came up and I thought I'd try it. My stylist is Vabrena. I like her very much. She doesn't mind I like to watch a movie and not talk too much, and she is super sweet. Since we are just getting to know each other she asks a lot of questions for clarity but pretty soon I am sure I'll let her make all the decisions. She's good. Both times my blow dry was as good as getting a professional blowout. This last visit, she even offered to wash my hair next time I was in the neighborhood with a new shampoo that was really good for red hair. What I love: 1. I can book online (don't need to talk on phone) 2. Lots of openings (flexible) 3. Last minute options (fits my crazy schedule!) 4. Completely affordable. (Great online promos) 5. In and out. I hour for single process color wash and blow dry on a busy Friday even (Ever notice how some salons keep you for a longer time because they run late and have appointments in between) 6. The SHAMPOO (seriously, shave me bald and I may not care with that massage/shampoo/conditioner) The first time I went to Kolorbar it was mid week mid day appointment. Not too busy and very relaxing. I came back during a Friday late afternoon appointment and it was busy. My appointment was made less than 24 hours earlier and looking around I was glad to have a spot. Went here for the first time yesterday afternoon after hearing about their summer specials. Really should have done more research. Got a shampoo, cut, and blow dry for a lower price than I normally pay, but the cut itself was mediocre. I'm talking about a nearly straight across blunt cut with a few layers, also blunt. I can't recall the stylists name ,but she was not communicating with me about what I wanted beyond how many inches and long layers, so given that she probably didn't even tell me her name in the first place. I showed her a picture to confirm she understood I wanted an A-line lob but as the cut went on it became clear she wasn't listening. She also failed to do something as standard as ask where I parted my hair before she started cutting the top layers - I was giving her the benefit of the doubt, since this is a very standard question to ensure the cut suits the customers needs, but before I knew it she was about to blow dry. So then I had to say something and she flipped my hair and then blow dried as if it made no difference. With how basic her cut and layering was, I guess it didn't. Oh, and definitely no A-line, it's completely straight across. I made an in the moment decision not to say anything because 4-5 inches was already gone and I wasn't going to risk it. I wouldn't want to lose even more hair because someone isn't listening. read more

I got a haircut at a different Kolorbar location and had a great experience, so I booked at this location because it's less of a commute and had the worst experience. It felt like Mean Girls in there. I know it's an Upper West Side salon but when I got my hair cut by Sam at the other location, I felt incredibly welcome! Not here. I made an appointment online for balayage. The stylist who took me was incredibly condescending and claimed that even though it had been several months since I had colored my hair and several inches of roots had grown in, she would not do my balayage without doing a toner which would be an additional $40. I misheard her, and asked "$14?" in surprise. Because I am no stranger to getting my hair colored and couldn't believe it would cost that little. She laughed and condescendingly answered "No. 4-0. $40." When I was willing to accept the extra $40 charge, she then proceeded to tell me how she would have to up charge me for a blowout and cut, which I did not ask for. But her whole energy and attitude felt as though she was trying to kick me out of her chair rather than do my hair. Didn't feel welcome at all. Never going back. read more

Went to Kolorbar for a shampoo + blow dry. The price was really good and overall, the experience was also really good until the end. I specifically asked the stylist not to put on any finishing product. She insisted and ultimately, we agreed to only put a little on the ends. But then she proceeded to add it all over the top part of my hair -- when I very clearly asked for this not to be done. Annoyingly, I found my hair to look oily right after it was done and this will also cut down on the amount of time I can keep the blowout. TLDR; don't see myself coming back. read more

I highly highly recommend Shelly for blowouts (so talented) and Turbo is an amazing stylist and delivers precise and skillful haircuts.

I asked for the front of my hair to be cut in the front and leave the back: at most just shape it a little. Right when I sat down the barber started insulting my hair. Then I went to the washing area and the person washing my hair was so rude! I got out of the seat because the person left and I thought it was done, she then came back and started scolding me for getting up, saying stuff like "why would you think of getting up!" She was basically yelling at me. After that I ended up with the OPPOSITE of what I asked for: they cut the entire back side off and left the front super long. Now it looks like I got a bowl cut!!!!! Overall super rude place that doesn't seem to listen to you at all!!! read more
