I only needed a haircut and this was the only chance I got (I am a SAHM with 2 kids and minimal backup except this day) so I said I would consider it but I need a cut now. It was 6 months since my last. That must have just not been the right thing to say bc I was judged, insulted during the entire session and I got the worst haircut of my life. I can't even get it fixed because it is so much shorter than I wanted. There are huge "texture" discrepancies all over my hair, the most obvious being in the back near my neck. There's also a strand of hair far longer than the entire length of my bob cut. I don't even understand how this happened. I'm so traumatized. I would never recommend this place and will never ever come back. I really had 1 chance to get a cut as a treat to myself, since I really don't have extra time to spare. And now I have to live with this until it grows out, definitely more than 6 more months. If I could give -1000 stars, I would. Please do yourself a favor and find a salon that can do a nice cut for long AND SHORT hair. WITHOUT A PERM TO MAKE IT ALL STRAIGHT FIRST. The skill level here is just so sub par. I could have done it myself.

STAY AWAY FROM Axhere!!!! I came to this reputable salon after having my hair perfectly cut by Frank and perfectly highlighted by Krissy. During our consultation, I provided very specific photos and requests for balayage/ombre in blonde shades. I asked if this was possible and she said yes. Once we began, I noticed her adding coloring in places not to my specifications or our consultation. When I pointed this out I was very rudely (and with much attitude) told "This isn't my first time, ok?" and she walked away....4 more times throughout the process I attempted to point out issues with the color and was bullied into silence each time. By the time my shampoo was finished I was extremely anxious to find what my trust in her expertise would yield. She left me sitting in my chair for 15 minutes while she went to blow dry another client...It was torture I was so nervous and could tell the color was wrong....Once my hair was somewhat dry, I pointed out what was wrong (all of the things I had tried to point out WHILE she was doing them when she bullied me into shutting up).She said she would fix it and we went over in even more detail what I wanted. She then went against our consultation AGAIN and turned the color on top into a dark brown and placed two white strips in the front of my hair like Rogue on X-Men. By the time it was dry I was so exhausted and traumatized that I just thanked her and left. This nightmare cost me $311... I cannot believe a salon of your stature would employ such a person and let me leave looking like I did. I believe I am entitled to at LEAST a partial refund. $50 was for style and blow dry, which is fine....But $266 for her to treat me that way and for me to leave only to cry at my horrible hair ???? The owner/manager defended this horrible employee and offered no refund. It is 2 months later and my hair is absolutely horrible. I have always had strong, healthy hair and have been getting highlights for a decade...I even bleached it entirely 2 months after box dying it dark brown in college, and it STILL was 10 times healthier than it is now. She should be go-go dancing in Staten Island, not doing hair in Manhattan. read more

You cannot go wrong with this salon....I love them...absolutely love them and here's why.... I timidly walked in on a Sunday afternoon and have very special needs because of a condition I have with my hair. I was introduced to a man by the name of Ariel who I thought would never understand my situation. Not only was he very sensitive to my condition but he knew exactly what to do. Ariel worked magic on me and brought me back to life! He gave me an amazing pixie cut and beautiful color and I was crying tears of joy in his chair...I know it sounds corny but it was very emotional for me. I have been back to Ariel for color, cuts, styling, conditioning treatments and now my hair is long enough for highlights!! First time in my life and I'm thrilled! You can tell he really enjoys what he does and he's very passionate about it. Also, no joke, purely as coincidence - we discovered that a girlfriend of mine has been a client there for awhile now and both she and her daughter go to Ariel for their cuts! Her confirmation to me that she'd had some of the best cuts and color from them really sealed the deal for me. The entire staff has been wonderful and warm and make me feel like family... everyone is so friendly and professional - the shampoo, conditioning and treatments I get are glorious...they are very attentive and feel fantastic. Since I have spent a great deal of time there I watch...everything.... and I'm quite impressed with how they all work - equally attentive to men, women, old and young. They do their jobs and they work together well. I've been in service businesses most of my life and worked in salons and I like their vibe very much. I highly recommend you try them...and if you do - be sure to tell Ariel you read this review on YELP...and I'm sure he will smile extra big...he's such a good guy and an amazing hair artist. NO - I do not get special treatments or pay for saying these things - I say them because I mean it. A devoted client Jana read more

I've been a client of Joel's for over10 years. He covers my grays, gives me really natural looking highlights, and very flattering haircuts. He is kind, gentle, and flexible. He's happy to let me sit quietly and read my book while he does his magic! That's why I keep coming back to him. When the salon closed in March, I bought a $500 gift card to support his business and the salon's. The assistants, Jeanette, Carlos, and Diana, are all really nice and helpful. Michael, the manager, goes out of his way to show clients how much he appreciates their business. Since the salon reopened, it has made many adjustments that made me feel comfortable. On my visit this week, I knocked on the front door and the receptionist came out to the street to take my temperature. I then completed a form confirming I didn't have symptoms and had not traveled within the past 21 days. I was Joel's first client of the day so the chair was already cleaned. But when I finished, I noticed Joeling spraying the seating area before seating his next client. The client chair next to mine was kept empty so there was no one on either side of me. At the hair washing sinks, there were partitions between sinks and signs indicating that the seat next to me was deliberately kept empty. If you need some hair magic at this time, you should try Joel and JSS. read more

This review is just about the hair. Not the coffee, how fancy the salon is, or what celebrities go there. I have been to all the top salons and you know what? When I leave- the taste of the Mocha Late and sound of the mindless chatter & name-dropping that actually goes on in those places is gone and I have to deal with what I call "The Hype Cut". What I am left with here with Mariko is an awesome cut that I can really work with that last me 8 or more weeks easily!. I met Mariko last spring, when I was in the middle of a horrible divorce and I was a really difficult client. She was not only incredibly smooth regarding my erratic behavior but she came up with a totally new look for me. I was refered to her from a co-worker and I am so glad that I found someone that will listen to me and has the skills and talent to guide me through the seasons and-does not push products I don't need! Total Fact-the last person I sent to her could not believe what a great haircut for the price...not that they were looking for a low priced haircut but-this is a true case of A $100 HAIRCUT for $65. After using a colorist for 20 years Im never going back to Jeffrey Stein. Elena was good, thats why I kept going back. but then she destroyed my hair and gave me attitude. THIS post is a warning. I was getting gray, a beautiful silver gray....however one side was more white than the other, so I went back to my colorist to get a few WHITE strands put in, to balance it out. I got YELLOW STEAKS - yes Yellow OMG I FREEKED. She tried to fix it, but it was not fixable. I went home depressed and should have never paid at all. A few days later I called and I wanted it fixed... NOT ONLY did she say to me I should have asked for platinum, she gave me a bad attitude. I asked her WHAT About White is YELLOW? How am I to know you have many shades of white? I left with a front of my hair that all white with yellow streaks, which I LEARNED is very hard to remove. I went to a different salon they did a treatment. And a week later I dyed my entire head silver gray. NO I AM NOT HAPPY... My own color was a stunning silver gray. She must have thought that life long clients should just stuff it. read more

Being a 38 yr old male in New York, sometimes it is tough to decide where to get a hair cut and how much to spend. Barbers have hacked my hair in the past with results that ranged from a ridiculous Ceasar cut to looking like a homeless man picking out garbage in central park. I guess that is what to expect when you pay 15 bucks. My friend suggested that I see Demetra at Jeffrey Stein Salon. I was hesitant at first but it turned out to be the best cut I have had in a very long time. Numerous people have commented how great it looks. I have decided that I will never get another haircut anywhere else and I will go in to see Demetra at least once a month. She is the best! She is very experienced and knows exactly what she is doing. Joel! Joel! I was so happy with my cut I had to hug him. First, my hair was damaged and cut badly six weeks ago (it's short and I'm a girl) so I waited until there was something to work with. I met Joel at another salon many years ago because my stylist was on vacation. I loved the cut but was loyal to my stylist so I didn't go back. Tragedy struck and my stylist is not with us anymore. I tried a recommendation from a friend. Uh-uh. Then I remembered Joel. He cut my hair yesterday and the poor guy had a real mess to work with and not much hair. He worked a miracle. Cut it so beautifully it's as if my hair grows into that style. Wouldn't even have to put product in to make it look great. Thank you Joel! Oh and do I recommend going here and seeing him? NO! I have thick curly hair and for the past five years (no matter where I've lived in the city), I'd make the trek to this salon to have MANUELLA cut my hair. I'm pregnant and was feeling so insecure about my appearance I saw a friend whose hair he did SO beautifully and naturally I reached out immediately at 10pm on a weeknight-- he responded promptly, answered all of my annoying questions, ordered the hair I've always wanted and got me in that week. He's absolutely lovely and an unbelievably talented artist-- I could not believe the hair and confidence I walked out with!! I emerged transformed with the most gorgeous hair and have felt 1000% better about my appearance than I ever did before pregnancy. He's so gentle which is so important for those of us with sensitive scalps and puts the health of your hair first. Mine has grown so much since I started extensions (I fully stopped heat styling because he managed to find the perfect texture for me) and am so happy with the progress I see in my natural hair health. Best experience on my hair journey in my life. I'd also highly recommend booking him for a treatment/blowout if you have damaged hair-- he makes one himself and I don't know what is in it but it is magical. I went from broomstick to soft and glossy in 20 minutes-- it is absolutely shocking.

Every time I ask her to do something, she will talk me through the process and go over prices before we get started. Angela always makes me feel good about my hair. She did a base color, bayalage, and a treatment with haircut. Look at all the foils she used! I have a lot of hair but it's very fine. She always makes sure my hair is taken care of so there is no damage. When I was getting my hair rinsed, Angela ran out and got me a birthday cake. How many of you can say your hairdresser would do that for you? It's those little things that make me keep coming back to see her. I've been a loyal customer at this hair salon since the beginning of the pandemic. I'm the type of…read morecustomer who treats everyone with respect as soon as I walk in. On top of that, I always offer the employees if they want a drink or something that I'm always willing to buy for them nearby. I also always provide a generous tip to my wonderful hairstylist, Shelly & the other person who assists with washing & conditioning my hair. Back in October 2024, I received multiple text notifications from KolorBar mentioning a 20% discount off balayage or highlights. When I called to schedule my yearly visit to get the services that I usually get, the receptionist who picked up the phone set up an appointment for me. The receptionist also mentioned the 20% discount to me herself. I informed her that I'm not a new client & that I've been getting services here for a few years. She told me that she was aware & the discount applies for all customers. When I spoke with my hairstylist to get a quote for all of the services I intended to get done, she gave me the total & also mentioned to me about the 20% discount that KolorBar was offering during the month of October. Mind you, I never mentioned the 20% off to anyone. Their own employees were the ones to mention the discount to me so of course I agreed to take advantage of it because this hair salon increases their prices every few months it seems. I called the hair salon to reschedule my appointment since an emergency came up. I asked to speak with Melodi since she knows me well. She's one of the managers of the hair salon. When Melodi got on the phone, she informed me that the 20% off discount is only for new customers. How is the promotional offer of 20% off only for new customers when the multiple text notifications I received mentioned nothing about it only being for new customers? How come the receptionist never mentioned to me that the 20% off only applied to new customers when I myself informed her that I'm a returning customer? On top of that, Shelly who is my hairstylist also mentioned the 20% off discount to me herself knowing that I'm a long time customer? When I explained this to Melodi, she made the excuse that their texts had "accidentally" sent that when it was only intended for new clients. She also said that the receptionist who answered the phone was new & only there temporarily. Melodi seems to have an excuse for everything. But she forgot to give an excuse for Shelly mentioning the discount to me. Then, Melodi indicated that I have "a lot of hair that's really coarse & thick" so it made me realize that they were purposely targeting me. They basically were intentionally not trying to offer me the 20% discount just because of my hair's texture. They basically discriminate & try to take advantage of clients who have long hair that's coarse & thick. How ridiculous is that. I requested to speak to the owner multiple times & nobody ever got back to me. There's two owners to this hair salon & I asked to speak to either one directly because I wanted to file a complaint. What they did is not right. Little do they know that I got many businesses shut down & this business could easily be next if I want to do the same. Don't play with me & definitely do NOT try me because I ain't the one. I know for a fact you guys don't get clients like myself often; the ones who offer drinks & food, along with providing a generous tip to the hairstylist & assistant. Disgusting establishment with unprofessional employees (Melodi). The fact that you guys treat your most loyal & sweetest client like this is truly disappointing. I have treated everyone with the utmost respect. P.S. You can report my review all you want. I will keep reposting it. If you'd like, I can also have other family members & friends who I have referred to you guys, leave the same rating for your business. This negative review could've been avoided if the owner had reached out to me.

I have been getting highlights for 20 years and this is the worst experience I have ever had. Upon…read morearrival I told them I wanted to try bayalage and they told me my hair already was bayalage and then instead proceeded to place foils in my hair. I probably should have stopped the process there but I was a bit confused about what was going on and thought perhaps they were transitioning between the two. The color: A full head of highlights took an hour and 40 minutes to place. The process was remarkably slow in comparison to the usual 40 minutes I am accustomed to. Afterwards my hair was streaky, orange, with persistent dark roots (see photos). It looks entirely unnatural and nothing like the photos I presented them with. I communicated this to them and they offered to fix it but the process took so long I had to leave. The cut: The right side is longer than the left overall an Asymmetric haircut. The blowout: The technique used to blow out my hair was archaic. No products were placed in my hair to protect it and the stylist proceeded to scorch my hair and fry it- inevitably causing severe damage. A portion of my scalp also burned in the process and a day later it remains red, painful, and is starting to peel. The Cost: My friend who has been going to this salon for years told me she pays $65 for a haircut and $200 for her highlights. I received a bill for $410- $290 for highlights and $120 for a cut. I questioned this and they insisted it was the correct amount. After tip I paid $500 for the worst hair experience I have ever had. Why I received a much higher price than my friend is unclear and the team was unwilling to explain this to me. Customer service: The staff was actually quite kind and willing to fix the issues. However given the fiat pricing and the terrible hair color and scalp burning I elected not to return to have my hair fixed. Overall: Horrible, hideous unnatural coloring that took an excessively long amount of time to do. The process was physically painful with damage occurring to my hair and scalp. Avoid this salon at all costs.
