I had my very first art lesson at Mititels art in Santa Monica on Santa Monica Blvd., and sixth Street I believe in 1962. Mr. Mattel was amazing so kind and inspirational. I will never forget him. The art store had every supplies you could want. We are so blessed that his sons have continued with his tradition and brought us another wonderful, art supply framing store! read more

They are simply the best. Framing. Knowledge. Quality supplies. Casual artists get their supplies on Amazon. Serious ones know that you have to touch, feel, see, and especially understand your tools and supplies. read more

They offer a wide variety of standard and custom picture frames at reasonable prices.

Mittels is a local gem. A family owned business that cares about the community and delivers excellent service. They make frames. Have canvases and supplies. It's not a big corporate store. It has real people and I hope the community can continue to keep it alive. I rent easels from them for events. I like little paint sets for gifts. And good sales on canvases and frames. Mr Mittel and Abby are great! read more

I love Mittels! I've had a watercolor that had a terrible frame and wanted to reframe for over a year but wasn't feeling confident with the framers I talked to. Then I remembered Mittels and so glad I did. They did an AMAZING job. They let me take as long as I needed to choose what I wanted and we tried so many combinations even when it was after closing. They just have the experience to instill confidence and all previous indecisiveness was resolved. Just got it back and I'm so happy with it. Not surprising. it's a family business that has been here since just after WW2 So incredibly experienced. read more

Got my stuff to reboot my painting skills. Its that time of my life to paint a self portrait! This place was recommended to me on Twitter. Sure enough it lives up to the hype of friendly and knowledgeable service. As far as the prices go...well I don't fault the people who run the store, after all they dont set the market price. But I will say that the term "starving artist" is still around for a good reason! Sheesh a small ass tube of oil pain $10! No mamén! Overall: Its my place to get my artists supplies! read more

This place moved in a few years ago and painted a perfectly pleasant wall, which had been that way for over a decade, with a terrible attempt at mural work. On top of the poor artistry, they failed to lay something down to prevent drips of paint from hitting the cement, UNREAL. I will happily delete this once the mess has been cleaned up, this place is honestly an eye sore. read more

We were in a pinch. 16 custom frames my company had ordered never arrived a day before a major executive event. After a colleague and I searched the greater Santa Monica area and were told no so many time we found our savior...Mittel's. They had some of what we needed in stock, but had to build the majority. With an extreme time crunch they took on the task with a smile (despite having a very late work night) and produced a beautiful order of many frames and mattes that we could not have been happier with. Our Fortune 500 international execs knew none the wiser of our mishap and were thoroughly impressed with what they received. I would trust Mittel's with anything small to large in a heartbeat. Thank you all so very much! read more

I brought in a red helmet to Mittel's and was looking to paint white circles to make it look like a toad mushroom from the Nintendo Mario series. Mike and the crew were very knowledgeable and offered different solutions. Ended up going with a white paint marker and was very pleased with the results and simplicity! read more

My family and I are not from this area and we were just driving by but I begged my dad to stop and let me check this place out because I'm an artist... it's super cute with the supplies I was looking for, they have a wide range of art supplies Mostly everything was on sale and I got some brushes I needed for an amazing price... it makes me happy to see art shops like this and I will most likely go back although it's a long drive!! I can't recommend this place enough, a mom and pop that does phenomenal work. I've completed 3 projects now and each one was better than the last. They do such beautiful work. If you have some pictures laying around and think you could frame them up and make them look nice, stop by here and get a consultation. Seriously I can't express enough how great of work they do here. Thanks John you are the man! read more

Mittel's is a GREAT store. It has literally everything you need for art supplies including really great sales recently on canvas -- I highly recommend you stop in and check it out. The staff are a husband and wife team, and they are so helpful and nice. I had no idea what I was looking for when I went in there and they totally helped me out, found me some good deals and told me what was worth buying and what wasn't really necessary for what I wanted to accomplish. I used to buy my "art supplies" at Target. Not anymore. I'd rather spend my hard earned money on a family-owned shop so I will definitely be back. This might even become one of my favorite splurge stores (if I ever do figure out how to paint, that is)! read more

I came here based on the positive reviews and my desire to support an independent art store. What a mistake. I needed a temporary frame for an expensive piece of fine art. They helped me select an existing frame to save costs and was assured that it would be professionally framed until I could upgrade to a better frame. Imagine my surprise when I went to pick up the work only to find that they had trimmed edges. Eh, ok. BUT THEY HAD CUT OFF THE ARTISTS SIGNATURE. In art-world speak... they took a $2,500 work of art from a prominent artist and made it worth $10 and impossible to verify authenticity. Near tears, the owner was indignant that "this was what you wanted." WHY would I want to cut off the signature??!!? Does no one at Mittel's employ common sense??!!? After an annoying back and forth, they let me 'call it even' and not pay the rest of my bill. Chump change, given that I've lost $2,500. Yes, the staff is nice and that's why I gave them my business. But nice doesn't equal competent and I wouldn't suggest anyone frame anything there. read more

I think I've been to every art supply store in town due to my days in architecture school. This is by far is my favorite. I love this one because it's right down the street from me and every time I walk in they immediately ask if I need help. And they genuinely want to help rather than just being told that they have to by their boss. I wish they were open on Sundays because here it is on a Sunday and I could really use some supplies! read more

I've been spending a ton of time in art stores over the last year and a half, and I'm so happy to have Mittel's as my local spot. Sure, I have to make the trek to Blick from time to time for bigger supply lists, but Mittel has most of the essentials and it is nice to shop at this indy store. The inside is not large, but it is well laid out and the staff is friendly and helpful. In the event that merchandise is not "on sale" (it seems everything I buy is on purported sale), they'll give a student discount of, I think, 30% (it could be 20%). Mittel's is a great alternative for Venice, Marina and Santa Monica folks who don't want to battle the West LA traffic for the bigger stores. This quarter I feel like I've just about bought them out of W&S gouache, but today is my last day of color methodologies, so hopefully no more emergency gouache purchases from me for a while! read more

A fellow artist recommended that I go to Mittel's to pick up some supplies that I needed for my photography. First off, there was some random homeless guy in the parking lot that wouldn't move for me (it was the last parking space). I know that's not their fault necessarily, but it immediately put a bad taste in my mouth. Inside, this place looks just like any other mom & pop art supply store. I was able to find a few of the things I needed, but I noticed that their inventory was REALLY low on everything. You would think that a art supply/framing store would at the least have picture hanging hooks. Another thing that irked me was the guy that works there. He was REALLY slow. I actually thought to myself that this dude must be baked off of his ass. His eyes were red and glazed, and he just seemed out of it. There was a really hot girl that worked there, and she definitely was with it. She seemed very friendly, knowledgable, and willing to help find exactly what the customer needs. Anyway, I'd give this place a 2 and a half if I could. read more

So really friendly people running the store. They have a lot of art frames, canvas from any sizes, sketch books, pencils etc. The place is well organized and clean. Prices are reasonable and real affordable for everyone especially students. This place allows me to let my creativity flow freely without a burnt in my wallet. Plus, they put a smile on my face (: read more

I'm with Jill....straight up art supplies, knowledgeable and helpful staff, fairly solid prices, good parking. Definitely not an Art Snob vibe in the house. I'm biased because it's walking distance from my house, which is extra awesome. It's also one of the few places I can buy razor blades for art projects without the third degree. I have to admit I'm also biased because for many years one of the staffers used to bag my razor blades up in a paper sack and draw a little picture on it for me. I still keep all of my new blades in the little piggie paper sack. The last time I went in I mentioned that story and all of the folks at the counter smiled and said "oh that's so and so, isn't that sweet? He does little things like that for everyone" which kind of says it all. Try getting a hand-doodled bag at Dick Blick sometime. Snerk. read more

An amazing place under perfect ownership. There's no need to go anywhere else. One of the only (if not theee only) family art supply store in my area. Everything you need for any and all projects is here and if not - the Mittel family will order it! Family owned. Local. Art appreciative. read more

Chris the owner was so kind and helpful. They have amazing deals on everything in the store and BOGO on canvases! Lovely store, wonderful customer service and such a great variety of supplies and frames. Can't wait to come back after I finish my masterpieces! Thanks again Chris. read more

Comfortable vibe here with smart staff that will help you achieve your vision. Great local family-owned business.

This store is great! They have everything you need in the way of art supplies, framing supplies, journals, etc. And, the service is great. I am always approached and asked if I need help, which I usually do. The salespeople are very knowledgeable and friendly. I also like to support a local store, rather than a mega chain. This store is great. No fancy decor just straight up supplies, and I appreciate that. The staff are very helpful, especially when you know what you want to do but don't know what you need to do it. Thanks Mittel's! read more

Professional, family run, and good selection. I discovered Mittel's a few years back because of Yelp. I had a wedding gift framed here, as well as a few other pieces over the years. Abby was amazingly patient and walked me though several options and took great care in finding the very best framing solutions. You would never receive that kind of service at Aaron's brothers. Thank you, Mittel's! read more

Great Art Center, the helpful folks there are always welcome to see me when I come by. A few of my pieces of work are proudly displayed there. Some bad reviews are posted here from previous issues that have occured, but 99% of the time they are on the ball. Thanks Mittel's read more

Walked in planning to buy several paint brushes. Guy behind the counter was complaining to a visitor about how bad business was, how hard it is to stay open, etc... He did not ONCE acknowledge me or ask if I needed any help (I was the only customer, on a Saturday.) I took a couple to the register to ask the price. Stood there waiting for help. Guy completely ignored me while he chatted away about how bad business is. I finally had to ask if I could pay. Want to know how to improve business? 1) SAY HELLO; 2) Put prices on your merchandise. I would have bought more if there was a price list or tag; 3) Ask if you can help find anything or give advice. How hard is that? Gave this 2 stars because the prices are OK and there is parking, otherwise would have given no stars, if possible. Next time I'll go to Utrecht. read more

I love this store. As a design professional, I have relied on Mittel's for all my projects, and if I'm not sure how to execute something, they are so helpful, giving advice and tips. I also love that it's a family-owned store; in this era of mega-chains, we have to support the independent local stores! Browsing the store is fun for ideas, too. Amazing. Amazing. Helpful, cheap, perfectly what I needed. They are relocating to further down Lincoln Ave, nr Rose at the end of Feb.

Great family owned art store with super helpful staff. If they don't have it in stock they will order it. Glad they moved to Venice.

Their work is fantastic and they couldn't be nicer. I've taken things to them that other 'framers' have tried to do and failed miserably. They do an outstanding job every time and the people couldn't be nicer, more patient or helpful. Very very highly recommended. Alana P read more
