This is an update to a review I left back in January 2026. I appreciated that Dr. Willis reached…read moreout a number of times to see how they could make this right with me. Considering I still have health concerns that I'd like to correct I felt he provided a sincere concern on how to rectify the situation. As a business owner myself that was is important to me. I am willing to go along with the program designed for me (which is much different than the first time around). I cannot say if it is going to make a difference since it's only been a week. Health issues can be very complex and achieving the desired results can and usually does take many paths. I encourage anyone seeking optimal health to at least talk with AFM with their concerns and ask the honest questions and do the research on understanding your individual health concerns. Thank you Dr. Willis for responding to my previous review.

I spent nearly $11,000 with Advanced Functional Medicine seeking treatment for mold-related illness…read moreand left feeling completely misled. I was not there for treatment of my autoimmune condition--I already had a neurologist managing that. I came specifically for help with mold illness, yet nearly every symptom I reported was attributed to my autoimmune disease while my mold concerns were never addressed. At the time, I was incredibly sick and so desperate to feel better, so I was willing to try almost anything that gave me hope. Because of that, it didn't take much for me to agree to finance treatment. I deeply regret that decision. My initial consultation was with Dr. Willis, but after that I never saw him again. Every subsequent appointment I had was with other staff members, such as a nutritionist. I later learned that Dr Willis was a chiropractor rather than a functional medicine physician, and there was no physician involved in my care who could prescribe medications. Most appointments were phone calls that consisted of me crying and being told to give the 'treatment' more time while my health continued to decline significantly. I also experienced repeated problems with my 'medical records' and the administrative side of my care, including errors in medical documentation and billing. In my experience, the entire process was disorganized and added to an already overwhelming situation. After months of treatment, I had accumulated a large loan while my condition continued to worsen. Ironically, I am now doing significantly better under the care of a physician who actually specializes in mold-related illness and toxicity. This experience left me feeling devastated and taken advantage of. This is my personal experience, and I hope others carefully research who will be treating them, understand their credentials and scope of practice, and think carefully before making a significant financial commitment before signing anything.

While I am an avid researcher and spend a lot time investigating symptoms and triggers for disease I knew I couldn't heal my body alone. I needed an expert. After getting back some labs from a speciality doc who stated he would just keep an eye on things but everything is "fine for now" I knew I needed to seek out better care. Most doctors will prescribe you drugs to alleviate symptoms... while naturopathic doctors will get to the underlying cause of them. A brief look at my health: I have had stomach/gut problems my entire life, an autoimmune disease, and a thyroid imbalance. I also hadn't had my period in months! While this journey hasn't been cheap, the investment into healing my body has been the best thing I have ever done for myself. Seeing my levels/numbers change for the better with Dr. Martinez's direction has been amazing. I finally started my period again, my cortisol/testosterone has normalized, and the antibodies (stress/attack) on my thyroid/hashimotos has gone from 371 to 150. My journey isn't over but I am grateful to have her support and expertise to guide me with each step! Dr. Martinez is lovely, refreshing, and full of wisdom.

I'm writing this review because what happened to me should never happen to any patient…read more I came to this clinic in a vulnerable and time-sensitive situation, and instead of being treated with professionalism, care and compassion, I was met with dismissiveness and a complete lack of understanding from office management. It was clear that certain staff members in critical positions are not trained -- or not willing -- to de-escalate, listen, or handle difficult situations with basic empathy. What I experienced felt more like ego and defensiveness than patient care. My provider has been supportive, but the front-end leadership turned an already stressful medical situation into something unnecessarily painful. No patient who is already struggling should walk out feeling worse because of the staff's attitude. UCSD is a respected institution -- but this experience shows that some individuals do not uphold the standard the institution's name carries. I hope leadership genuinely reflects on this, because the way certain staff behaved is not just disappointing -- it is unacceptable for a healthcare environment.

I tried to establish care with a primary care physician, and the experience has been an absolute nightmare. At my first appointment, I checked in early, only to sit in the lobby for over an hour and a half waiting to be seen. No updates, no communication--just sitting there while the doctor took forever. Eventually, I had to leave because I couldn't wait indefinitely. When I rescheduled and came back, I was 15 minutes late due to circumstances beyond my control. Despite the fact that they wasted an hour and a half of my time at my previous visit, they refused to see me and said they didn't have staff to accommodate me. Their "solution"? Validating my parking. As if that makes up for the fact that I still don't have a primary care physician and now have to wait months for another appointment. This place clearly does not value its patients' time or care about actually providing medical services. They expect you to wait indefinitely for them, but if you're just a few minutes late, they turn you away with zero regard for your health. Absolutely ridiculous. Avoid this place if you actually want reliable healthcare.

I received a PARKING TICKET while I was inside this hospital visiting a family member who was…read moreDYING. Let that sink in. While my family was preparing to lose someone we loved, this hospital was outside making sure it collected a few more dollars from a parking space. Absolutely shameful. A hospital is supposed to represent CARE, COMPASSION, and HUMAN DECENCY. Yet somehow management has created an environment where even a grieving family isn't viewed as a family going through unimaginable pain -- they're viewed as another CUSTOMER to charge. Your customers already pay THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS for medical care. But apparently there is no point where enough is enough. Even the family members sitting beside someone on their deathbed need to open their wallets just to PARK. How unbelievably cold can you be? Nobody comes to a hospital because they're having a wonderful day. People walk through those doors scared. They receive cancer diagnoses. They undergo surgeries. They watch loved ones suffer. They hear news that changes their lives forever. Some people, like my family, are there to SAY GOODBYE. And apparently management looked at those people and thought: "You know what else they should have to worry about? Paying us to park." That's disgusting. I wasn't thinking about your parking system that day. I was thinking about the fact that someone I loved was DYING. I was thinking about spending whatever time I had left with her. And when I walked back outside after experiencing something that painful, your contribution to that day was a PARKING TICKET waiting for me. Congratulations. You collected your parking revenue. I hope it was worth it. I hope whoever approved these policies can look a grieving husband, wife, mother, father, son, daughter, or family member in the face and explain why squeezing a few additional dollars out of them during one of the darkest days of their lives is necessary. Because I would genuinely love to hear that explanation. You can put the nicest signs on the walls. You can use words like "care," "compassion," and "community" in your advertising. But compassion isn't a slogan. It's how you treat people when they're vulnerable. And this is how you treated my family. There should be SOME places in this world where basic humanity comes before squeezing another dollar out of someone. A HOSPITAL SHOULD BE AT THE VERY TOP OF THAT LIST. Management should be embarrassed that this policy exists, and absolutely ashamed that a grieving family even has a reason to write this review.
