I've finally switched doctors from Dr. Christine Wang at Scripps Clinic Carmel Valley. I don't even…read moreknow where to start with how terrible she is with her "bedside manner" and how annoyed she appears to be when you question her. She will message you with the results of a test with a very vague message that "your scan came back ok". Nothing more. Then when you respond to the message asking for clarification, you are told you need to book an appointment with her. Not even when you are asking a basic question. I call the office and speak to the nurse and am told I need to schedule an appointment with the doctor. This has been the case many, many times with this doctor. Then you get charged for another doctor visit when you were already charged for a doctor visit for the initial appointment. This drives up the cost of insurance and forces me to have to pay for another visit when all I needed was clarification for the test result. Sending a message that the test came back "okay" does not tell me details of my situation. When I booked the appointment recently to review a CT scan result that "came back okay", we did so on a video call and she literally rolled her eyes and actually let out a laugh at me when I questioned things. I didn't learn anything more from that call and she could have simply answered the same info in the message portal. Instead, she cost me more money for this additional visit that left me aggravated at how she treated me. At annual physicals, other Scripps doctors have sent me for my annual bloodwork before my physical so they can address the results at my physical appointment. Dr. Wang refuses to do that. Instead, she will order the lab work to be done after the visit. Once I do that and get the results back, she will message me with the results. If I have further questions, then I am required to make another appointment with her to discuss. This happens all the time. If she would have the bloodwork done prior to my physical like other doctors have done, then I wouldn't have to pay extra to make another appointment to discuss the results and ask my questions. Recently, I was planning to go on a cruise and reached out to her office to have a specific seasick medication prescribed to me. After several calls to the office requesting to submit the prescription to the pharmacy (as well as the pharmacy calling the doctor's office several times to assist in getting the prescription), they submitted the prescription but it was for the wrong form. I very specifically requested the pill form and NOT the patch form. They called in for a patch. Both the pharmacy and I made repeated calls to the doctor's office to get it called in for the pill form. (The pill form does not have some of the side effects that the patch has which is why I wanted the pill form. The pill form is a "compound" drug and needs to be made up at a special pharmacy and is not readily made.) So I called back the office (this was after 4 days of back and forth to get this corrected) and was told that Dr. Wang doesn't prescribe compound drugs and would not be able to prescribe it for me. That I would need to go to make an appointment with a doctor who can prescribe compound drugs. I told them that this is ridiculous since she is a doctor who should be able to prescribe a medication for seasick pills. We live in San Diego and I imagine with the Navy presence and ocean waters/boating/fishing industry, there must be plenty of people needing to be prescribed seasick medicine. They told me that they were sorry but Dr. Wang cannot prescribe compound medicines and didn't know how to prescribe this particular medicine! I responded that she is licensed to prescribe medicine and that she should be able to consult with others within Scripps or the pharmacy to be able to do so. I was very upset since I had run out of time to get in to see a doctor who could prescribe this medicine. So I called the pharmacy and thanked them for all the calls back and forth they'd made to Dr. Wang's office to try and help with this prescription but I was going to have to go on my cruise without it. The pharmacy called me the next day and told me that Dr. Wang's office had called in the compound prescription for this medicine in pill form! Dr. Wang's office NEVER called to tell me that. Somehow Dr. Wang figured out how to prescribe this basic medicine but never called me to apologize for all the back and forth issues or to even let me know that she could call it in afterall. They knew how upset I was but never called to straighten it out. I'm guessing they would have required that I make an appointment for her to talk to me like she has for everything else. Dr. Wang has a horrible bedside manner! She doesn't like when you question her or ask for details. She's annoyed with you questioning her. She should be encouraging you to ask questions about your healthcare instead of treating you like you are annoying her! I'm shocked that Scripps keeps her on staff.

***please note: I am re-posting this review because Yelp's filter unfairly hid my review,…read moreapparently thinking that it was bogus. I can assure you I am not related to the doctor, he's not my friend, and I have nothing to do with his business! I put a lot of time and thought into this review, and I only did it to tell the truth.*** I could not disagree more with the firsrt reviewer. I think Dr. Rathbun is outstanding. Dr. Rathbun has been my family's physician for half a decade now, and I have nothing but good things to say. Dr. Rathbun has a quiet and gentle manner that puts children (and nervous adults) at ease. He is never pompous, abrupt, or condescending, which are traits one unfortunately sees sometimes in doctors who graduate from the best medical schools (Dr. R went to UCSD). Instead, he is patient, courteous, and calm, and appears genuinely concerned about his patients' well-being. In my experience, he approaches the patient's concerns with the seriousness appropriate to the occasion, but is never without a genuine smile and a bit of humor to lighten the mood. The first reviewer said that Dr. Rathbun rashly blurted out to her mother that she "may have cancer when there was nothing to indicate this." I mean no disrespect to that reviewer, but I find that very hard to believe; it just doesn't square at all with my experience. Here's an example: in infancy, my daughter experienced a series of unexplained ilnesses and multiple bouts of pneumonia. People started throwing around the "C" word, so when I approached Dr. Rathbun about an underlying cause, I was really scared. (Dr. Rathbun had already suggested we consider a more comprehensive approach to find out what was going on.) Dr. Rathbun was not alarmist at all. He calmly listened to my concerns, reviewed my daughter's medical history, then helped me formulate a plan for invesitgation and eventual diagnosis. Happily, it turned out she does not have cancer, but a condition that more or less resolves itself by adulthood and can be managed in the meantime with proper prevention. Throughout the diagnostic process, Dr. Rathbun was always available with a calm, practical, and reassuring response to the changing information. Here's another: a while ago, I began experiencing pressure and pain that started to interfere with my ability to run and carry the kids. Being a lifelong runner and a mother, I was worried. Of course when I finally went to see Dr. Rathbun, I was worried about the big C. As always, Dr. Rathbun calmly and patiently listened to my symptoms, asked pertinent questions, conducted a thorough exam, and then devised a plan of testing and diagnosis, starting with the simplest and most obvious and working up from there. Never once did he say, "Oh, my God, I think you have cancer!" or anything so ridiculous. He must have read that fear on my face, though, because at the close of the visit, he said with a smile, "And no, I don't think it's cancer. Nothing in your symptoms or your exam suggests that." Finally, even my husband, who HATES going to the doctor and avoids it until a body part is falling off, likes Dr. Rathbun. He was a little leery before his first visit; he said, "Isn't he a baby doctor?" But after Dr. Rathbun helped resolve a long-standing elbow problem that had plagued him for months and interfered with his push-ups, he agreed that Dr. Rathbun is pretty great. In short, in my opinion Dr. Rathbun is an excellent pediatrician and family practitioner, and I would highly recommend him.

I went with my mother to an appt. She came out of the office in tears. I was in shock and thought…read morethey diagnosed something terrible. It turns out this doctor is just either totally ego-driven or totally insecure. When my mom tried to ask questions, the response was along the lines of: "I went to medical school and have practiced medicine X number of years". Basically, a "shut up and don't ask questions" response. How does that make the patient feel comfortable or confident? I'm appalled that any doctor would even say that?!? No kidding you went to medical school - that's why we're here! I asked to speak to the doctor, and she wouldn't see me and sent the RN (who was lovely). I looked up other reviews of this doctor (not on Yelp) and no surprise, a 2.5 rating for similar terrible experiences about lacking bedside manner. I've had doctors I love and doctors I don't go back to, but have never left in tears feeling chastised by a doctor. And I will add my mom was not feeling well (I drove her), so she was not being "challenging". We had gone to urgent care earlier and they made us an appt with this doctor, so we just wanted to get to the bottom of her issues and symptoms (which includes asking questions). I've never reviewed a doctor before on Yelp, but I feel compelled to because of how terrible she treats people and I would want to know to avoid her (also, maybe it's no surprise she had open appointments last minute.) Avoid!
