I am a soft serve/froyo snob. I really prefer a slightly tart, firm froyo. But the convenience of Mister Softee lured me in. I'm sorry, but 3 dollars for a sub-par dip cone is ridiculous. The "dip" was gross and waxy. The actual soft serve was pretty good... a little sweet for my liking, but pretty good. The cone itself was actually the tastiest cone I'd ever eaten. If you've ever had homemade local soft serve ice cream, then you would think that soft serve from Mister Softee is too thick, too sweet, and feels very commercialized - like it came from a huge bag mix. OMG, I didn't know that I could enjoy an ice cream cone so much! I was visiting NYC this weekend and my friend encouraged me to try the soft serve of Mister Softee. Yes, I gave MISTER SOFTEE only 3 stars. The soft serve is good; but nothing spectacular. Having not grown up in NY, there is no nostalgia for me, so my review is based solely on my 2 experiences. I went to the truck on hot days for a plain chocolate cone ($3, if I remember correctly) and another day for a strawberry sundae ($5). For prices that high, I just expected more. Oh Mister Softee, I remember when we were $1.50 a cone. Yes, I am showing my age but now you are double that price. However, I have fond memories of your music coming down my street and it always reminds me of summer. Now to the present day. Mister Softee does not always play music while driving the streets of Manhattan but the trucks look the same. Price now range from $3 to $5, I recently ordered their vanilla with fudge topping (you know, the kind that hardens on your ice cream, like a miracle of chemistry). I have no idea how this ice cream gets so many good reviews other than pure nostalgia. In a way, I totally understand - I remember a similar rosy glow over things like Voltron and Coco Puffs until I went back and re-experienced the travesty they truly are and were. But dude, c'mon. You know McDonald's ice cream? The kind that's vegan because it's so synthetic that there's no milk product in there whatsoever? The kind that doesn't actually melt if you accidentally leave it on your kitchen counter overnight, but just dissolves into an evil foam? Yeah, well, if you did a double-blind taste test there would be no question that it still places light-years ahead of the greasy fart that is Mister Softee. If you have a choice then go to the Yellow Truck (i.e. Van Leeuwven) - it shouldn't even be a question. If you don't, then save yourself a stomachache and at least get the pre-packaged ice cream sandwiches or eclairs or whatever. Remember when you were a little kid, and these trucks would ring their tinny bell, and all the kids in the neighborhood would run to the truck with a few quarters from their Mommy? Well these trucks still roam Manhattan.. .and those outside during lunchtime grab a softy cone with soft chocolate or vanilla. I love their thick milk shakes too. This was another one of my favorite street food on my trip to NYC. I absolutely love soft-serve ice cream and this is as good as it gets. I believe it is my favorite soft-serve in the world! LOL! You must try the cookie crunch it's soooo gooooood! The ice cream has this unique taste to it that makes it so special. My bf and I loved it so much I think we had it 4 times during our trip. I was always on the lookout for a Mister Softee truck every day of our stay! It tastes so good especially since it was so hot. You have to try it! Ahhh Mister Softee trucks totally brings back childhood memories. Playing at the park and hearing this obnoxiously annoying tune over and over again to finally approaching the truck to get either an ice cream cone or popsicle wrapped in a plastic covering. Back in the day these ice cream cones use to cost only $1. I have no clue how much they cost now since I don't venture out to my childhood park often very much anymore but I'm sure the prices did rise. mr. softee, i've been wanting to try mr softee's icecream for a long time & i finally did the other day. the weather was WAY too cold for one, but i got the cherry coated soft cream anyway. unfortunately, i do not like your cherry coat. it was oily & didn't melt in my mouth. it got stuck all over my teeth. as for the soft cream, well, i couldn't really get to enjoy it with oily chips of stuff in my mouth, and that was a disappointment. maybe i'll try some other kind next time, but for now, i'm gonna have to give you a 1star. yours truly. read more

Ahhh... Mister Softee, what NYer doesn't instantly smile at the wonderful jingle that announces the onset of summer? Flashback to the 80's, Memories of playing skelly with beer bottle caps in the park with my sister before abandoning the game to make a mad dash to the truck at the first faint strains of that magical jingle. Sigh... but I digress. Ever since I became a "grown-up" I've always resisted eating Mr Softee because I was afraid that the ice cream in all actuality would taste awful and I wanted to keep this cherished part of my childhood intact. But one humid spring day I gave in and prepared to burst another bubble of childhood nostalgia. "Vanilla cone with rainbow sprinkles please." I cautiously took a bite... OMIGOD THIS IS DELICIOUS! This tastes exactly as awesome as I remember! I quickly inhaled the rest of my soft-serve and promptly ordered my childhood favorite, Vanilla with red shell, (Cherry? Strawberry?
