Dear Mister Softee... When I was a child in Canarsie, I only looked forward to seeing you. I wanted to taste your sweet sweet um... ice cream and crunchy wafer cone everyday. I would chase you down the block until you stopped for me! Oh Mister Softee, I thought our love would always be $1! But, of course I've grown and I have needs other than vanilla. Frankly, you bore me ever since the recession! I've found other ice creams! Like Ben & Jerry's... Mmm yeah. Goodbye my bittersweet love. It's time for me to leave you melting on the hot asphalt street, choking on the very gas exhaust of your own god damn truck. read more

Having grown up in the city, I grew up on Mister Softee like every other New Yorker did. Finding a Mister Softee truck on a sweltering hot New York day is God sent. Back in my days (not too long ago considering that I'm not THAT old) one come would cost you $1-1.25. Now it would cost you about $3, but you get the best soft served ice cream that the city has to offer. read more

Accept no imitations! Many trucks look like Mister Softee, but if you don't see those two magical words, keep on going. Seriously, my brother has some sort of dyslexia and is unable to differentiate generic soft ice cream trucks from Mister Softee trucks...don't be like him! Depending on the location of the truck, the price for a cone can get a little crazy. So maybe ask first, cause sometimes they crank the price up ridiculously high. But there is a distinctive taste that only Mr. Softee can deliver. Crazy story. A few years ago, I was in Westchester at my parent's place. So I ran outside when I heard the music (with all the other boys and girls) to get a cone. I was barely dressed and had no shoes on. I get my cone and am standing on the side of the road when some dude in the car behind the truck starts honking at me. He rolls down his window and tells me I better get inside because he just saw a coyote!!! So I'm standing out there, half-naked with a cone of dripping vanilla ice cream thinking that I was going to be mauled to death at any second. Needless to say i got back inside very fast and still enjoyed my delicious soft-serve. read more

The jingle makes the thing taste better- it is the scary guy in the dirty t-shirt handing out the ice cream that is annoying...

Uhm, who else wishes Mister Softee had a phone number and worked like a taxi cab? Because yesterday I was literally blowing bubbles sitting on my porch waiting all day for his delicious ass to come down my block. Mister Softee does wonders. He heals wounds &makes evil crying children stfu. OH, and for the long islanders: YOUR MR. SOFTEE IS FAKE! Not lying, a few months ago I had "Mr. Softee" from a truck in Suffolk county and it tasted like diet ice cream AKA GROSS. read more

Mister Softee, you make my mouth water. Its the best NYC summer treat....creamy, whipped and cold but not too cold. BUT, a warning to those who hit the Mister Softee near the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan: this truck charges 2x the price of every other Mister Softee in town. Just say no to the fancy overpriced Mister S! read more

Ahhh Mister Softee, you shouldn't have! Hahah I love ice cream trucks in general because I feel like ice cream tastes 1000x better when they come out of a truck. Where I'm from, you don't really see any mister softees. And now, after trying it, I feel compelled to run after one whenever I go down to the city. I was walking with my boyfriend when I heard the music playing. I turned to look at him, and without saying a word he automatically says, "okay, let's go". At this point I'm already giddy because my bf is psychic. When I actually taste the ice cream dipped in a cherry hardshell...the clouds parted and the sun was shining. Of course im exaggerating, but i was pretty darn happy! I think I smiled all the way back to his home. Mister softee is a good man! Eat his ice cream! read more

Mister Softee is part of summer in manhattan. It's the best ice cream around. This ice cream is always very thick and I love getting sprinkle on the top. It's such a shame when the weather changes and they are gone! read more

Mister Softee - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Runnemede, New Jersey

The key to Mr. Softee is all the air forced into the mix. Which makes it light, fluffy, and hella creamy. Is it gourmet? Oh hell no. Does it make you happy on a hot-ass day? Yes indeed. I usually hit the one up by the subway entrance at 8th Ave. and 57th St. The guy that owns/drives the truck is pretty nice, and always makes sure the people in line are happy. read more

A New York Classic. I remember when I would be sitting in the house as a wee lad. Bored and tired. Flipping through the channels to find something good on TV to watch. All of a sudden I would hear that song outside my window... I would lift my head up like when a deer hears something in the woods as if to make sure I heard the right notes... YES!!! MA! DAD! can I get some money? And if not, I would look under the sofa and see If I could conjure up some change. Once I had the money. I would run outside with all my might just to catch up with the truck. THE MR. SOFTEE truck that is... I was pretty consistant with my order. Vanilla with sprinkes... If not that then it would have to be a swirl. Well they still have it... The ability to make me run in the direction in which the familiar sound was coming from. The soft serve still has the taste that they had since BACK IN THE DAY... read more

My god. Mister Softee. I live in California and I miss Mister Softee Ice Cream more than Obama misses his good poll numbers. You people on the East coast are so lucky! My last visit to NYC I bought 3 double cones. 3! I was constipated for a week but it was so worth it. I would do it again in a second. This Ice Cream just simply tastes incredible. Never had any other Ice Cream with more flavor. read more

Fuck those people who say his music is a disturbance to the neighborhood. Bloomy actually made Mr Softee lower his music, and turn it off when he is parked, because people called 411 to complain. Are you serious? When you call to complain about a truck delivering ice cream to locals, then it is time to just pull the trigger and end it. Oh and I love the ice cream. Nicholas, the nice Greek guy, came cruising down my block every summer day around 2-4pm. I would get Bubble-O Bill, Frogger Ice Cream or the WWF ice cream bars. Soft served ice cream cones and milkshakes still are great from any of these frozen meals on wheels. read more

Of the Mr. Softee of 34th and 7th... Absolutely amazing. I don't know if this guy is always at this same spot but I'm so glad my friend convinced me to get a cone with her yesterday. She had vanilla with chocolate sprinkles, I had chocolate with chocolate. Oh, heaven, simply heaven. The chocolate soft serve tasted something akin to a rich mousse...maybe not for everyone's tastes, but I couldn't think of anything better. Definitely the best $2.50 I have spent in a long time. Prolong the fading summer and get a cone STAT! read more

Does anyone remember the poorly made commercial on TV for Mister Softee? There were very bored looking people with ice cream, saying dully, "Mistah Sawftee is da best." My pal Doris and I always say, "Mistah Sawftee is da best" when we see that familiar truck and hear the familiar jingle. (And then we run over excitedly to get in line!) I LOVE Mister Softee. Soft serve from a truck. What's not to like? The ice cream is flavorful and I am a huge fan of the "double cone." You get two spires of ice cream in a special cone made wider to accommodate the extra hefty ice cream serving. Awesome. Mistah Sawftee is, indeed, da best. read more

"You son of a bitch, what do you MEAN you're out of CHOCOLATE DIP!" Mr. Softee is a necessary evil. It's a scorchingly hot day. You've got a few minutes to kill. And you feel like plugging your arteries with something buttery and decedant, but you only have a couple bucks to spare. Mr. Softee is calling you. I don't frequent this place much, but when I do, it's a welcome treat. I just went today and picked up a vanilla cone. Mmm...soft serve with the texture almost like heavy whipped cream throughout. Not icy like tasty dlite, not sour like pinkberry, not flavorless like McDonald's. Of course the tradeoff is health. I don't know what the nutritional value is for a Mr. Softee cone, but I bet it wouldn't be worse, than say, a couple shots of peanut oil or a scoop of crisco. But hey, at least it tastes better. read more

I LOVE MISTER SOFTEE! I get excited everytime I see his freakin' van parked on the corner. Chocolate sprinkles, all the way. Two bucks = delicious ice cream cone =) read more

Classic! Soft! Look for the smiling man with a bow tie and soft swirl head. Always remember to be extra nice to the man in the truck because he's the judge of how much ice cream looks good in your cone. read more

If you could look up soft-serve ice cream in the dictionary, you'd see it directly followed in definition with the words, "Mister" and "Softee". I know this may sound ghetto, but I love McDonald's soft serve ice cream. Dipped. When I visited NYC for the first time last May, I was not on any endeavor to find soft serve ice cream. Bring in the Mister Softee truck. Take away McDonald's and throw it in the trash. It's creamy, thick, not grainy, not yogurt-y, and just milky creamy.. so hard to explain. So I won't. Just go get one. I didn't see him on my most recent trip about a week and a half ago (perhaps due to the climate?).. but I'll see you again Mr. S. Even if you're ok without me, I'm not ok without you. read more

having been stood up by the big gay ice cream truck, TWICE, only to find out they have a store...along comes mister softee to the rescue! a chocolate dipped chocolate soft serve. so creamy, so chocolatey, so just in time to save me from getting the ice cream withdrawal shakes. thanks for dealing at my corner! read more

Mister Softee - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Runnemede, New Jersey

I LOVE THIS! I managed to get it twice after doing some shopping errands and walking in the heat. When we saw it, my husband and I each decided to get a cone to cheer us up -- carrying bags and trekking along with crowds can be a little annoying. As soon as I got my (soft serve) chocolate sprinkles/chocolate ice cream cone in my hand, I suddenly had a smile on my face. It cost $2.75 (with sprinkles), my husband's vanilla cone without anything was $2.50. Not a bad splurge for a once in awhile summer treat. Not sure if it's nostalgia, or feeling like a kid again, (eating a fast melting cone quickly, sprinkles falling all over the place) but I swear this ice cream is really good. I used to get Carvel, and it didn't taste the same. Mister Softee was richer and creamier, and not too sweet. Perfect chocolate flavor. Haven't seen the truck in awhile. See other soft serve ice cream trucks all the time, but I'm holding out for Mister Softee. read more

All I can say is that every time I'm in NYC I always get a chocolate Mister Softee... There isn't any thing special about it and it reminds me of the soft serve ice cream trucks in London. The ice cream is soft served and it's a yummy snack when you're walking around NYC. I only get the chocolate because I think it has more flavor than the vanilla (the fiance gets the vanilla). I love the texture and consistency of the ice cream. One time I almost got two in row but the Fiance stopped me because we had to go eat dinner. I can't wait to go back to NYC for this.... read more

What to say, what to say?? Nearly every day during the summer, this was my singular chance to feel like an adult, cross the street unattended, and spend my parents' money on a good humor toasted almond bar. I shalln't allow this to turn into a review of Good Humor despite the fact that the man with the ice cream cone for a head sells a great deal of it. He also dishes out great, just-made flying saucer sandwiches, vanilla milkshakes, and soft-serve vanilla sundaes with butterscotch being my favorite topping. When you hear the bell, and you're ten, you know where to go. read more

In my opinion there are few things better than a double chocolate cone with chocolate sprinkles in the middle of the summer. Every New Yorker grew up to the sound of Mister Softee's theme in the summer time. When you hear it, it unleashes the little kid inside of you & i know I'm the only person who wants scream ICE CREAM!!!!!!!! THE ICE CREAM TRUCK IS COMING!! COME ON MOMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!! HURRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At 26 I still have the urge to run to the truck to place my order. Its worth the line NO MATTER how LONG it may be! read more

Not good. I'm disappointed. As an ice cream connoisseur, I was compelled to try Mister Softee after seeing these trucks everywhere - afterall, it's a NYC thing. I had a chocolate soft serve with chocolate sprinkles ($3). The sprinkles were okay, nothing special, but the soft serve tasted a little plasticky. There was something subtly off/artificial about it. Big Gay Ice Cream and the custards at Shake Shack are far better and comparable in price. read more

Turn off the annoying music, Mister Softee, and I will actually eat your ice cream. It really is unbearable. It's 45 degrees out and one of your trucks is parked on 110th st blasting your song. Your ice cream is ok I'm sure, but you ruin NYC in the summer. read more

The ultimate urban Pavlovian effect: -Hear the jingle -Search your wallet for money -Elbow neighborhood kids out of the way for your chocolate cone with a chocolate dip (or occasional chocolate shake.) -Eat said treat on your block/front-stoop/park bench with relish, while licking up the chocolaty rivers that run down your arms. True, God only knows what's going on in the back of that truck in terms of hygiene. I don't want to even think about how often the soft-serve machines are sterilized (probably once a season, at best.) But I can't lie; the summer hasn't officially started until I hear "the jingle." read more

I will NEVER waste my money on another Mister Softee again. The only reason why Mister Softee has revenue generated is due to the fact that it has been a staple of New York culture and since then, standards have risen in our palettes. Trust me, my friends. The ice cream products from this truck gross me out for one, and two, their chocolate dipped cones are indeed disgusting. I've tried Mister Softee 5 times in various neighborhoods just to make sure it wasn't me that disliked their ice cream. I mean how hard could it be to screw up ice cream? Don't answer. The chocolate they use to dip their cones in is nothing shy of cocoa powder mixed with cold water (same consistency you get when you don't use hot enough water to brew your hot cocoa mix) with a nasty gritty consistency. In addition, the term freezer burn does not exist in their vocabulary. Ice cream bars I've had from these trucks have been freezer-burnt and very disappointing. There's nothing like convenience at your fingertips and how people or tourists will settle their standards with this type of sub par ice cream. Highly NOT recommended. Mc Donald's ice cream is way better, which does not say much. Two stars for nostagic value and convenience for those willing to settle for less. read more

Mister Softee helped me acknowledge that I am a crotchety old lady. I bought a single chocolate cone on a 90 degree, high-humidity day ... and when the guy told me how much it costs, I was so shocked I said, "It didn't cost $3 the last time I bought one of these, ten years ago," and he smirked. But it's the taste of my childhood. And the sweetly tinny song of lost youth. ...and at once the vicissitudes of life had become indifferent to me, its disasters innocuous, its brevity illusory - this new sensation having had on me the effect which love has of filling me with a precious essence; or rather this essence was not in me it was me. I had ceased now to feel mediocre, contingent, mortal. Whence could it have come to me, this all-powerful joy? I sensed that it was connected with the taste of the ice cream, but that it infinitely transcended those savours, could, no, indeed, be of the same nature. Whence did it come? What did it mean? How could I seize and apprehend it? (P.S. Don't sue me. This is totally fair use.) read more

Oh Mister Softee, what is this spell you've placed on me? My family and I are huge fans of soft serve ice cream and discovered Mister Softee on our vacation to New York. We loved it so much we got one cone every day of our trip...we were addicted. The ice cream is excellent, the toppings are generous, and the serving is huge. The price is good for the amount of ice cream you get, and we usually split one cone between the four of us. IF ONLY MISTER SOFTEE COULD COME TO CALIFORNIA....sigh... read more

Mister Softee has the best soft serve ice cream you can find in the city, the consistency and flavor just can't be beat. There's nothing innovative about anything they do, just good old fashioned vanilla, chocolate, or swirl done up bare, with sprinkles, or chocolate or cherry dip. Their chocolate sprinkles are the first I've ever had that actually taste like chocolate, not chalky brown sugar. Unfortunately the portion is fairly small and they don't give you a choice of sizes but at $2.50 for a cone with sprinkles it's still a good deal. Of course if soft serve isn't your thing there's other options but I won't get into those as they all take a back seat to the ice cream. Keep in mind there are many similar looking ice cream trucks out there that are terrible so make sure you see the Mister Softee name and logo before you waste your money on an inferior dessert. It's been awhile since I included any history into a review so here you go. Mister Softee started in Philly in 1956. Currently there are over 600 trucks in 15 states, most (but not all) in the Northeast. Their current headquarters is just outside Philadelphia in Runnermede, NJ. In 2007 Mister Softee made it's international debut by opening up a franchise in China. read more

This soft serve reminds me of my small town ice cream place. A must-go if you are visiting. Mister Softee is an east coast icon! He even has spin offs in Mrs. Softee and Captain Softee. I don't say this normally about a place with multiple locations, but it is consistent service and food each time. Which is delicious, cheap, and efficient. Everything is good. I happen to be a sprinkles fan, so I usually get a swirl dipped in chocolate with sprinkles. I've had their shakes too, but I'll always go for a cone. read more

After 8 years of being away from NYC, I find it disheartening to see that Mr. Softee can no longer play his jingle freely in the streets of NY. Mr. Softee was the friggin Pied Piper back in the days -- playing his tunes to the merriment of me and my sister who'd come rolling along in our awesome roller skates with whatever coins we had on us. This city needs to take the stick out if its butt and let Mr. Softee sing again. read more

I know some people think Mister Softee is gross because it's a truck, but I love it. They have the best soft serve cone. It's so thick and creamy. You know it's so bad for you, but it tastes so good! No other soft serve tastes like Mister Softee. I have to have it at least once every time I visit NY in the summer. read more

It's been really warm this week...and yet I still haven't heard that wonderful little jingle coming down my street. Soon? I hope so. I grew up in the middle of nowhere, we didn't have ice cream trucks. The novelty of a truck that sells ice cream outside my house will never wear off. And delicious chocolate dipped vanilla soft serve amazingness at that. I love you double dip. Here's to hoping today is that day....jingle jingle jingle. read more

Its noise pollution when they are outside my place for over an hour playing that DAMN jingle. Hit or miss. Sometimes you'll get stomach flu for days eating one scoop of this stuff. I don't rely enjoy sitting on the toilet for days so id avoid. It's four bucks for a double scoop on a come. So for four whole bucks, I get a soft serve with stomach flu included. This totally is better than going down the street to the nearest Duane reade and purchasing my own bucket of ice cream and cones for Less. Slurpies or those cold ice things are a dollar. It's alright. Food coloring isn't the healthiest, but it's Cheaper than Starbucks. I'm only giving it an extra star because I love the music. Childhood. read more

Finally I found the US equivalent to the UK/Ireland treat, the 99 cone! I first experience thick, creamy, delicious soft serve ice cream in London when I was in high school. Every other soft serve I'd had up to that point was watery and flavorless. Last year I was blessed to discover that the very same ice cream was all over Ireland, and during my 2 week stay I sure took advantage. Now I am happy to know that there is a stateside version of this tasty treat, sans Cadbury Flake. I'll only have to endure a 5 hour flight rather than a trans atlantic trip to get it!
