To this day, the jingle makes me immediately look around to see where the truck is. In this era of small-batch, artisanal ice cream (which I also love), I can still be just as giddy to get a small cone of Mister Softee soft serve. Unfortunately named in the age of Viagra, the Softee Mister doles out prepackaged ice cream and ices that if looked at objectively are not very good but on a hot night can make kids of all ages turn over their couch cushions in blind obedience as the carol of the bells work their magic. Sure, artisanal ice cream awaits at any number of local parlors but in all honesty, nothing beats ice cream off the back of a truck. Their success after all these years no doubt is tied to remembrances of simpler times and for that five dollars seems like a pittance. Good bad or indifferent this summer ritual is worth every penny. Mister Softee - a New York City institution. As a kid growing up in the Bronx, the Mr. Softee truck used to be parked outside my elementary school at dismissal every day in the nice weather, and on special days we were actually allowed to indulge in some soft serve. It was such a treat, I remember the best thing about after school in the spring was when we would get to have some Mr. Softee. Additionally, its infectious jingle would play through the streets of my neighborhood. I lived on a main road and was always jealous of the kids who lived on the side streets where the truck used to drive right by their house. Memories are fun, but I also call them as I see them. As a kid with rose-colored glasses, Mr. Softee was the best; as an adult, not so much. I had the opportunity to try some soft serve from one of their trucks recently and in all honesty, it fell short. The vanilla just seemed to have no flavor. Likewise unlike the unlicensed push carts that the city does not shut down, he keeps his truck spotless and is out on the street from early March through the first flakes of snow in the autumn. And for those who observe religious dietary laws, his ice cream is Kosher. In addition to soft ice cream and ice cream bars, he sells exceptionally good grape nut, strawberry, cookies and cream, rum raisin and pistachio hard ice cream. On a budget? "Here Comes Mr. Softee" is the name of the timeless wonder, and the lyrics are as follows: "The creamiest, dreamiest soft ice cream You get from Mister Softee. [first four lines repeat] S-O-F-T double E Mister Softee! " Lovely. You hear the jingle and then you know what you want. You know what you need. Vanilla ice cream, Cherry slush, Strawberry milkshake, Fruit flavored lick-a-pop (yes, I just coined that) you name it, and the pimple ridden fresh-out-of-the-DMV buddy will get it for you. Then you begin your licking, and the white ice cream truck goes away. You sigh. "Someday" -you think- "This 1950's piece of life will only be a memory" Like drive-in theaters/restaurants and hola hoops, they will be reduced to a handful of trucks only.....or maybe not. I am a Mister Softee fanatic. I admittedly get a little giddy when I see a Mister Softee truck parked anywhere in the city (which would insinuate that I get giddy approximately once every two blocks downtown. Hey - at least I'm happy, right?). Delicious soft serve, chocolate or vanilla, covered in sprinkles or 'dips' as well as various sundaes and prepackaged treats...all of which are marvelous and remind me of how old I am. Seriously - they didn't have SpongeBob SquarePants popsicles when I was a kid! Ripoff. But, I digress. It's cheap(ish), it's nostalgic, and it makes Ryan K. giddy. Need I say more? read more

Dear Mister Softee... When I was a child in Canarsie, I only looked forward to seeing you. I wanted to taste your sweet sweet um... ice cream and crunchy wafer cone everyday. I would chase you down the block until you stopped for me! Oh Mister Softee, I thought our love would always be $1! But, of course I've grown and I have needs other than vanilla.
