This Mister Softee ice cream truck serves many tourist destinations in Philly and North New Jersey and has been operating since 1956. Really it goes wherever there are a bunch of kids or overheated people. Today we were at the Rocky Steps and it was brutal hot without a water fountain in sight. Then out of nowhere, this Mister Softee truck appeared and it was like an angel on wheels. A white truck with pictures of ice cream on the sides. A man appears in a little window. It was like a zombie schuffle of thirsty people toward the truck. We bought two ice cold waters for $3.50 each and would have paid $10.00 each at this point in my hydration recovery. read more

My hubby and I after the climbing the Rocky steps with friends decided to grab something cold on a hot day and I'm so Glad there were 2 mister softee trucks in front of the museum. We ordered a strawberry shortcake cone and cherry slushie and oh they were so good! We kept taking bites of each others treat and if we weren't heading to have lunch , I probably would've ordered another ice cream cone lol. So good and I'm very happy that Florida has mister softee now as well. Service was quick and friendly! read more

We saw the Ice Cream truck at the Rocky Statue & The Rocky Steps. We got a chance to try the Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream Cone and Cherry Slushie. It was great. The Ice Cream tasted exactly like Strawberry Shortcake. Before I know it, the Cherry Slushie was gone. Service was good. Didn't take long to complete our order. read more

To this day, the jingle makes me immediately look around to see where the truck is. In this era of small-batch, artisanal ice cream (which I also love), I can still be just as giddy to get a small cone of Mister Softee soft serve. I moved away from the Mister Softee service area for years, and I missed it and the sounds of the trucks every summer. Growing up, we'd often drive past this headquarters building near my NJ home; seeing the ice cream truck on the roof still makes me smile. I even had the jingle as my ringtone for a few years. I never bothered with the novelties like the bomb pop, though I think I got an ice cream bar shaped like a cartoon mouse a few times as a kid. I'm pretty satisfied with a twist in a cake cone. Haven't tried a black and white shake in years, but I'm sure it would still be good. read more

If you're looking for some good soft ice cream without going to the store this ice cream truck is great. Right now they only have vanilla and chocolate but sometimes they also have strawberry and banana. But they make a delicious Banana boat with the works that can't be beat and some of the best fudge Sundays around. But if you're into thick shakes they have them too and they are also very good. read more

The tune, the nostalgia, and . . . the taste! Still after years upon years, Mister Softee is ever-very yummy! When I was a kid, I'd either get a sundae, the double twist (the "cat" maybe?) or the "black and white" milkshake. Now, I usually will just get a chocolate cone with rainbow "sprinkles." When we used to live in a swanky former townhouse area, the truck came RIGHT TO THE POOL! My kids would almost always partake, as would almost all of the kids, hopping out of the pool and tugging on their paying parents! I always love seeing and hearing Mister Softee :) xoxoxoxoo read more

Like lemmings to the frozen sea the sleigh bell jingle of a neighborhood ice cream truck invariably touches off instant paroxysms of begging and pleading for ready cash among the children of the suburban corn (and me.) Mister Softee has been around at least since the 1960's first as a brick and mortar competitor to Dairy Queen and currently as a fleet of independently owned trucks. Unfortunately named in the age of Viagra, the Softee Mister doles out prepackaged ice cream and ices that if looked at objectively are not very good but on a hot night can make kids of all ages turn over their couch cushions in blind obedience as the carol of the bells work their magic. Sure, artisanal ice cream awaits at any number of local parlors but in all honesty, nothing beats ice cream off the back of a truck. Their success after all these years no doubt is tied to remembrances of simpler times and for that five dollars seems like a pittance. Good bad or indifferent this summer ritual is worth every penny. A hard five stars for the pudgy man of soft. read more

I found Mister Softee today in FIDI area near water street... the funny thing is - 1) I was randomly craving ice cream 2) I have always wanted to try out Mister Softee and I feel all the good stuff is located in midtown It was meant to be for me to try this today. I got a vanilla cone with half nuts and half sprinkles. I have never got this combo before but I loved every bite. You have to have crunchies on your ice cream I realized! This cost me $3.. which I feel was a bit on the steep side for a cone from a truck...but the quality was there.. I also docked a point because my cone was stale...which normally I throw away my cone so it all worked out...but those of you who love the crunchy cone with ice cream inside...might be a deal breaker! read more

Pretty sure that Mister Softee follows me around NYC, if that isn't the case there are just Mister Softee trucks everywhere! With this muggy, warm weather Mister Softee does not disappoint. From various dips, sprinkles and flavors this truck makes them so cartoony perfect you don't even want to eat the $5.00 ice cream you just bought. But to hell with that, soft serve to your heart's desire. I got a double vanilla, cherry dip for $4.00 and it was pretty good. It's refreshing, sweet and the soft serve was pretty good. The cherry dip tasted anything but cherry and was more of a coating to protect the quickly melting soft serve, it just tasted sweet. After a while the flavor does get kind of old, stick to your single or grab ice cream elsewhere. A good quick treat, but man $4.00 for a cone of ice cream is kinda steep especially coming from an old school ice cream truck like that! read more

Oh Mister Softee.. The memories.. I still remember my mom buying me my first ever rainbow sprinkle cone when I came to the United States..20 years ago.. When it was still $1.25. Good times. I remember that used to be a bi-weekly routine for my parents and I; after school, walk up the block and wait in line for a rainbow sprinkle from Mister Softee with his familiar jingle! Fast forward 20 years and here I am.. Still with the same routine.. Buying a Mister Softee cone every week now (weather permitting). And of course..a rainbow sprinkle cone is now $2.75..about the same price as a gallon of premium gasoline..Loll (Couldn't think of another comparison). And if you're unlucky and you're in a tourist trap like Time Square and you suddenly have the ice cream craves, Mister Softee there can cost almost $3-5 for a cone.. CHILL.. I got my go-to Mister Softee ice cream truck too..This brown guy who routinely drives by P.S. 162 in Fresh Meadows where I play handball. I have his cell # too..in case I'm craving and I need a cone ASAP. Simply dial his # and be like, "Hey bro, where you at? I need my fix!" Word. That's a thing now. A fix. Loll.. :D #fatpplproblems Mister Softee is a NY staple. Obviously they don't have the best ice cream in the world..but hey, for $2.75, I get a sweet dose of creamy, smooth ice cream to satisfy my craves. Plus, on those days when I'm not feeling a cone..I get to order a strawberry milkshake and my guy actually uses real strawberries in the mix! That's good enough for me. No complaints from this fatty! :P Though I am curious about one thing.. Reading some reviews from my fellow Yelpers.. How do y'all get sick from Mister Softee?? O_o Must've been some bootleg Mister Softee that served you..wow! Or maybe cuz I have a black hole for a stomach.. I swear..sometimes even I don't know where the food that I eat goes.. *shrugs* Mister Softee will forever be a NYC icon. And will forever have a place in my heart. :D Deuces. read more

Mister Softee - a New York City institution. As a kid growing up in the Bronx, the Mr. Softee truck used to be parked outside my elementary school at dismissal every day in the nice weather, and on special days we were actually allowed to indulge in some soft serve. It was such a treat, I remember the best thing about after school in the spring was when we would get to have some Mr. Softee. Additionally, its infectious jingle would play through the streets of my neighborhood. I lived on a main road and was always jealous of the kids who lived on the side streets where the truck used to drive right by their house. Memories are fun, but I also call them as I see them. As a kid with rose-colored glasses, Mr. Softee was the best; as an adult, not so much. I had the opportunity to try some soft serve from one of their trucks recently and in all honesty, it fell short. The vanilla just seemed to have no flavor. It could have been just a one-off experience, but my "oh!" before trying the ice cream turned into an "oh". Mr. Softee gets a 3 from me out of respect and nostalgia. Is it the best ice soft serve you can get? No. Is it the worst? No. When it comes to Mr. Softee, it's more about the experience - waiting on line during a hot NYC summer day and enjoying your frozen treat while standing in the street or walking down the block. That alone makes it worth a try. read more

Wow. I hadn't had a vanilla milkshake in ages, but this one was awesome! Creamy, satisfying, cold. Not too sweet actually! I happened to just run into one of these trucks while shopping in Soho. Unfortunately, I did not try their soft serve so I can't comment on that, but I'm sure next time I run into Mister Softee, I will! read more

Lalalalalalalalaa.. lalalalalalaa.. lalalalaa... Well, I'm actually kinda tone deaf. Don't rely on me to name songs or sing anything for you. The carefree days of running around with at least one band-aid on the knees, when biking without a helmet was legal, and playing hopscotch was still age-appropriate. Yes, we did not hibernate in front of TVs or computer screens at all hours of the day and/or night. Sometime around 4 or 5 PM each day, we heard the beloved tune that epitomizes the joys of childhood. At the first faintest ding-a-ling, we quickly gathered any money we could find, stormed down the creaky stairs, risked our limbs and skulls as we hopped down the concrete front steps, and raced in the direction of the blue and white promise-land on four wheels. Soft serve? Want chocolate drizzle? Strawberry drizzle? Sprinkles! Or flavored icies? Oooh, they have banana splits! Ice cream sandwiches! Oh oh, what about the strawberry shortcake ice cream bar! And a chocolate version too! Or should I get the orange creamsicle bar? Oh too many choices! Oh, I'm dying from indecision and I have so little money!!! Arggghhhh!!! How do children around the world deal??? I've always enjoyed Mister Softee, but I was always sad to finish it so quickly. I wished the sweet sound would stir my ears again, so I can raid the piggy bank for more money and wrap my little hands around another Mister Softee treat. Don't go, Mister Softee. Don't turn the corner. Don't leave me here savoring the last icy lick of nectar. Step 1 - fill up a large pool with Mister Softee ice cream. Step 2 - make sure both vanilla and chocolate are poured in with equal amounts. Step 3 - swirl around with large boat oars to get a nice swirl mix. Throw colored sprinkles on top. Step 3 - strip clothes off, get butt naked, and dive right in! I have to admit I love seeing these trucks pop up when spring comes around each year. The creamy consistency is always a treat. The sound of that single bell "ding!, ding!" beings me back to my youth running into the house yelling "ice cream man! Maaaaaa - the ice cream man is coming! I need some money! Ice creeeeeeaaammmm!" Also, I have a little secret I will tell you all. My uncle owned a fleet of these in Brooklyn and Sheepshead Bay by the beach when I was a kid. We always had buckets of this yummy ice cream at every family event and birthday party. Yes, we were spoiled and I was a fat kid wearing huskies because of this and all the Italian food my Mom's side of the family cooked. Mister Softee is a NY institution. Once upon a time, there was a time - a time long long (but actually not too long) ago, before moving to the NY area, I lived in a world in which I had not ever experienced Mister Softee. My soft serve came from buildings that did not sit on wheels, often touting flashy promotions, a seemingly endless array of new ice cream type products, and a fixed address. One day I came to NYC, a visitor. Naive in demeanor yet confident in spirit, I ventured through the most populated of areas, experiencing a variety of food options, always (foolishly) engaging with anyone that looked my way, never pondering the motives behind the amazing tour bus deals, CDs with no labels, or very pointed "Hey, do you like Human Rights?" type questions, in which "no thank you" isn't really an answer that makes sense. In one of those early visits, as if David Blane himself was working me with invisible strings, a soft serve twist cone with chocolate sprinkles presented itself to me. It was amazing. It was delicious. It was my favorite. I now associate Mister Softee with all the good things about New York. It is a treat among treats; consistent no matter which truck you encounter, and no matter which way you order it...you have made the right decision. If I didn't live in NJ I would probably indulge my fatty fatty lardo soft serve inner-brain cortex (that's the scientific name) and run outside to find one right now, given i've spent 20 minutes typing about it. read more

Not all Mr. Softee trucks in Brooklyn are the same. Ali who drives this truck has been serving the kids (and adults) ice cream, slushes and milkshakes at the corner of Coney Island Avenue and Newkirk Avenue (next to PS 217) for 21 years. He is known by thousands of kids as the friendly man who does not raise his prices when everyone else does and who always has a kind word for each and every customer! Likewise unlike the unlicensed push carts that the city does not shut down, he keeps his truck spotless and is out on the street from early March through the first flakes of snow in the autumn. And for those who observe religious dietary laws, his ice cream is Kosher. In addition to soft ice cream and ice cream bars, he sells exceptionally good grape nut, strawberry, cookies and cream, rum raisin and pistachio hard ice cream. On a budget? He sells Marino Ices for the same price ($1) as the illegal unlicensed carts! In short, Ali may sell the same ice cream as the other Mr, Softee trucks, but what he gives in goodwill has no price! Update: 6/17/14: This season Ali has added Mint Chocolate Chip and Coffee Ice Cream to his hard ice cream flavors...yes! And I learned today that the Ditmas Park Corner interviewed him for a story...he deserves the recognition! Updated: 5/3/15: His 25th year at the corner of Newkirk and Coney Island Avenues and he still only charges $2/cone for soft ice cream and $2.75 for two scoops of hard ice cream! read more

Ok, so it's not the best soft serve out there, in fact, it's not even close to being as good as a rural Dairy Queen (meaning, one that's in a small town vs a big city), but still, it's one of those things that I catch myself doing a couple of times a Summer in NYC - taking down a chocolate or cherry-dipped cone or a rainbow sprinkled cone. Maybe it's the quickness or the convenience, or the cost, or that it just reminds me that Summer is here in NYC and I'm living it. Either way, it's something I'd recommend everyone try at least once. The truck arrived at the scheduled time on the dot, and immediately got to work making our guests happy. I've never seen such efficiency in my life. Mister Softee trucks are everywhere in the city, and from what I hear, they're at amusement parks too. I was walking down fifth avenue, tired after shopping and just leaving the H&M store when I spied people walking around with ice cream cones. When I turned the corner, I saw this ice cream truck run by some guy who looked like he came out of Staten Island and who was on his cell phone the whole time. Well, when he got my ice cream, he put it on top of the machine for a minute. I got a half and half (chocolate and vanilla), and let me just tell you, it was the creamiest ice cream cone I think I have ever had. I am not kidding. I was totally taken by surprise. It was strangely not that cold, but extremely velvety and smooth. Yum. Four stars only because the second time I went, it was less creamy, and the cone is $3. Mister Softee is THE urban ice cream man. Sure, it's basic soft serve ice cream and no, the menu doesn't include wasabi pea dust or pumpkin butter (Oh how I yearn for you always BGICT) but when I'm standing on the street between an $8 cup of Grom gelato, a $5 popsicle from popbar and the $3 cone from the Mister Softee truck...something draws me to the truck. You can get plain vanilla or chocolate, chocolate or cherry dipped, sprinkles or one of 8 or so suburban flavors like the Astropop and creamsicle. I went with a root beer float last night and was pleasantly surprised and thankful he gave me the whole can to keep refilling as I devoured. I've never heard them play the tinkling music of my youthful summers in California, but when I see the Softee truck I can't help but smile with reverence for this vintage vehicle of sweet, creamy goodness. read more

I thought I saw you yesterday. My ears perked up, my mouth salivated. I checked my front right pocket to make sure that I had cash on me for my chocolate shake. Upon closer inspection I saw that it was an imposter. I gave the imposter a dirty look and told the kid closest to me that the imposter truck's ice cream tastes like gasoline. That's not a lie. Mommy told me that and if she said it then you know it's true. Just like when she said our dog didn't die. In fact he was adopted by a man with a farm Upstate. I know that's true because Mommy said so. And just like that time I came home after Sunday School crying because I thought we were all going to Hell and you said that they didn't read the newspaper because Papa Dios said that no one is going to Hell anymore. 5 stars for soft serve ice cream! Freakin 1 star for the BS pricing! My topping of choice... RAINBOW SPRINKLES! Gay and classic. Reason for the BS pricing, try purchasing a soft serve cone with sprinkles in the city and then purchase the exact same thing in the hood, lets say... Jamaica Queens? Big difference! Some trucks would charge up to $3.50 to $5.00 for a vanilla cone with sprinkles! Hood price - $2.00 to $2.50 tops! When I was in elementary, $1.50 was the most expensive cone w/ toppings you could possibly get. Verdict - Still one of my all time favorite ice creams. I am currently sitting in my living room, listening to the cars and birds outside, and hoping to hear the tintinnabulation of the Mr. Softee truck. Sometimes you find yourself with an empty stomach, on an empty street, with an empty schedule. Just then, a tiny little jingle reaches your procrastinating ears; http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/LB/mrsoftee.mp3 Ah yes! the surest omen that summer has finally arrived is when you listen to that lovably odious jingle that actually has name and lyrics. For a lick of trivia, the song was composed on 1959 by a Philadelphia advertising firm. "Here Comes Mr. Softee" is the name of the timeless wonder, and the lyrics are as follows: "The creamiest, dreamiest soft ice cream You get from Mister Softee. For a refreshing delight supreme Look for Mister Softee. My milkshakes and my sundaes and my cones are such a treat. Listen for my store on wheels -- ding-a-ling down the street. [first four lines repeat] S-O-F-T double E Mister Softee! " Lovely. You hear the jingle and then you know what you want. You know what you need. Vanilla ice cream, Cherry slush, Strawberry milkshake, Fruit flavored lick-a-pop (yes, I just coined that) you name it, and the pimple ridden fresh-out-of-the-DMV buddy will get it for you. Then you begin your licking, and the white ice cream truck goes away. You sigh. "Someday" -you think- "This 1950's piece of life will only be a memory" Like drive-in theaters/restaurants and hola hoops, they will be reduced to a handful of trucks only.....or maybe not.
