This review is long overdue, but in a way that's OK, since I have now used Tim a good half dozen times for various electrical repairs. The first time was when he installed a ceiling fan in our family room. That particular room is an add-on that was built by the previous owner of this house. Because it is an add-on, it does not share the attic space of the rest of the house. The only way to hook up a fan in that area of the house is to fish a line between the rafters. That entire room is on the outside of the previous outside wall. To make it look right, they stripped the old stucco siding and replaced it with wallboard. The finished job looks like it came with the house, but where that new family room butts to the old ceiling there are more beams than would have otherwise been the case. He finally told me he would have to open up the ceiling to get the new electrical line to the ceiling fan. I was envisioning a long hole across the ceiling to the fan. Not so. He made an opening about three inches in diameter where the family room and old ceiling are joined. Repairing it afterward was a piece of cake. Tim worked several hours on what would have normally been an installation that consumed about an hour. He had quoted a flat rate for the job, and that's what I paid. I knew then that I had found my electrician. I have since had Tim to our homes a good half dozen times for jobs both big and small. I trust him completely. And it's worth nothing that he is a very clean workman. He brings his own tools, ladders, and drop cloths. And he cleans up after himself. For myself I pay very close attention to the one-star reviews, but in doing so, I always ask myself whether the complaint if valid or not. People are what they are. Some demand too much because that's how they roll. Some demand too much because they don't understand the difference between reasonable and unreasonable. With that in mind, I would like to address one of Tim's one star reviews. I am a woodworker with enough skills to have designed, built, and installed the cabinets and countertops for our new kitchen. I finished that job in 2020 when I was 75 years old. Tim was my electrician. When he cuts a hole for a new outlet or some such, he will carefully set that block of wallboard to one side, so it can be repaired later. Most electricians do it that way, and those of us who know why are thankful that they do. How much does an electrician get per hour? A lot more than most of us make. IF he makes that drywall repair, he will charge you his hourly rate. It doesn't make sense for him to do otherwise. The time he spends on that drywall repair is time he could spend on the next job where he will be paid his normal hourly wage. No one runs a successful business by giving things away. When a guy like me says it's a simple repair, those who have never done such things will scoff. "Easy for you!" they will say. Thirty years ago that would have been a valid observation, but we live in the age of the Internet. Do a Google search for drywall repairs, and you will pull up dozens of how-to-do-it-yourself videos. It really is a simple thing to do. As for the issues others have touched on in their five-star reviews, about all I can do is holler, Amen! Tim is as honest as the day is long. And it's his honesty that prompted this review. He did all the electrical work for our new kitchen, but I recently noted that there was only one GFI outlet in the area near the sink, and that one had been there all along. Two others appeared to be standard outlet boxes. I just called Tim to have him change these to GFI outlets. He told me to push the test button on the one GFI outlet box I had in that area. He said the other two should then go dead. Damned if he wasn't right. He went on to say that he always wires kitchen outlet boxes that way. If any one of the outlet boxes on that circuit goes out from shorts, water damage, or other things, all of them will go out. Tim could have just said, "I'll be right over to replace those outlet boxes, and this is what I will charge." But he has entirely too much integrity to do such a thing. And that brings me to the last point I want to make. I have never asked this man what he charges for any job I ask him to do for me. I already know he's not the cheapest guy in town. I doubt he's the most expensive guy in town, but if he were I'd still use him. Tim McDonough is a very knowledgeable electrician who is honest. I trust him completely. And that's what I'm looking for whenever I hire someone to work on my home. read more

We had Tim come out to replace a Zinsco panel in our remodeled condo, and we're so thankful we found him. Before Tim, we had been in talks for the same project with a much bigger electrical company. See, our HOA required us to have a permit before we got this job started. That bigger electrical company told us of possible worst case scenarios and all that can go wrong and how expensive it was going to get with this project just to deter us from getting a permit. That company even had someone come out and quote us on the job, and then backtracked saying that quote wasn't right and now they needed to requote us for a much higher price- it was a mess! They had us so stressed out with all the 'what-ifs' and the possible costs. In comes Tim! We had a week before a tenant was going to move in, and he had no trouble scheduling us in. He came in one time to see what he was getting into and told us the project was going to be no trouble. That same week he got us a permit, scheduled the inspector for a final inspection, came in the second time, executed like the pro that he is, and just like that this crazy project that had been lingering around for days was done! Hired Mission Electrical Service to wire in a spa at our house in Clairemont. While I called on a few different companies in the area, I was most impressed with this one. His price was competitive, he was professional, and came highly recommended. He showed up to quote the work in uniform driving a van w/decals and license numbers etc. He is not a fly by night operation or a "moonlighter" but a true professional who takes his business serious (I like that). I contacted a few electricians in the area after reading their yelp reviews. Not everyone is willing to come out and provide a free quote (especially on a Saturday just a few days away). Tim came over and we discussed the project. I got one other quote but the other electrician seemed less professional and less knowledgeable. Also, his price was higher and he wasn't confident it would be thee final price until starting the work. A few other companies gave me pricing site unseen and I was not comfortable using them. Obviously going with Mission Electric was an easy choice. Tim hung three sputnik chandeliers in my vaulted ceiling and he removed the lighting fixture that was in another part of the room. I was so happy both with the end result and his work throughout the day. From all my interactions with him, it was clear he was very knowledgable. He also came on time, took great care to not make a mess, and he cleaned up after the job. I was expecting couple of holes in the ceiling and walls but he only cut one and screwed it back in neatly so all I have to do is a little patch and paint. Once he installed the boxes to hold each of the chandeliers, he hung each one without connecting the power so I could see exactly how it was going to look and we could tweak the height of each one. He was just as concerned about everything looking perfect as I was. Working with Tim was all around a great experience. Should I ever need electrical work done again, I will only call Tim. Tim charged me to come out and give an estimate on a Friday. $148 to be exact. I was given a quote for $300 to fish a wire a few feet to the garbage disposal outlet/switch and one other outlet less than 2 feet away. I was desperate and tired of the problem so I gave him the go ahead. Plus who wants to pay $150 for a troubleshoot and estimate? He had to punch a hole in the wall to fish the wire over, which I asked him not to do. He then proceeded to tell me that in order to get power to my above-the-stove microwave, he'd have to run a dedicated line and tear up my (freshly painted) walls and ceiling, then gave me quote of $900. I had previously had another electrician come out (free estimate) who said the same thing, only he wouldn't tear up my walls and it would only cost $250 (DON'T TELL HIM WHAT ANYONE ELSE TELLS YOU, HE WILL EXPLOIT IT). I politely declined and paid him $450 to fish some wire to a few outlets. Total rip off. The next day I had Robert's Electric come out for an estimate. They also charge about $150 to troubleshoot and estimate. They fished the wire to my above-the-stove microwave outlet from an outlet he had fished power to the previous day for only $100 (so basically he could have just run the wire up to the other outlet a couple feet away). Problem solved. Later that next day, I look under my sink and notice that there are wet paper towels in there where Tim had been working. Water is dripping from the hot water valve, all over my brand new cabinets and flooring. He must have noticed it was wet because he used the paper towels to clean it up! Only, he failed to mention it to me. Another thing, he broke the (freshly painted) wall around every outlet/switch that he worked on and had to use spackle to fix it, and did so very haphazardly. You're an electrician and you cannot remove and replace a face plate without damaging walls? Do yourself a favor, go to someone else. I wonder if those other reviews are even real. read more

I was referred to Tim by my student intern. I manage vacation rental property in La Jolla and Mission Beach. My brief story is: SDG&E shut off the electrical feed to one of my property's and just left a note on the door with no explanation. I called Mission on a Friday at 2:00pm left a message and received a call back in 15 minutes. Tim was at the property by 4:00 pm and committed to the repair Saturday at 8:00 am. He was done by 4:00pm on Saturday and that is where he really stepped to the plate. SDG&E after telling us we did not need a permit reneged on the commitment to turn on the service after the repair and required a city inspection and permit. You and I know this is code for city work and fees. Tim took care of the permit on Monday, Met the inspector on Tuesday, and arranged the SDG&E turn on of the electricity on Wednesday. This fiasco was created by city and SDG&E bureaucracy whose business ethics are deplorable. Fantastic service! Tim not only showed up the same day, his work ethic was impeccable! When we lost power in certain rooms in the house, and the breaker was not resolving the issue he went to work immediately to find the source. A couple hours later after much detective work he did successfully, with determination and a commitment to customer satisfaction. What impressed my most however was his "flat rate"policy. We were not charged for the excess of time it took to solve the problem, and while he easily could have inflated the price of the actual repair, he did not. When I called, I spoke to Tim. He was quick to set an appointment to come to my home. When he got there, he was courteous. He gave me options for the outlet and ways to save money.
