The bagel scene in San Diego is popping right now, but I think the crown goes to Mission Bagel. In the last two weeks, I've tried bagels at Marigold, Desperado and Mission- what feel like the current holy trinity of NY style bagels in SD. The consistency of the Mission bagels feels like the perfect chew. For me, Marigold went heavy on the chewy end and Desperado went heavy on the soft end. Mission Bagel is right in the middle. Perfect amount of chew, but not so chewy that it requires work to get through. You can find these bagels in a small trailer in the parking lot connected to the PB Coffee Cycle. The menu is simple. A variety of plain, sweet and savory bagels along with different schmears or egg, tuna or white fish salad! All toppings (cucumber, tomato, onion, caper) are also included which makes it an extra special treat! I got an everything with lox schmear ($1 extra but worth it) with tomato and cucumber. IT WAS PERFECT. If you want something even more complex, you can get the lox bagel! They also sell bagels by the half dozen as well as tubs of schmear. I'll have to spring for that next time because I'm already sad my bagel is gone. A little grateful that this place is still new and the droves of people haven't shown up just yet. So good I kinda want to gatekeep this, but we gotta support local to keep these spots in business so I'll share.

Everything bagel with scallion cream cheese - look at that dense, chewy crumb structure. This is what a real bagel should look like!

Finally, authentic New York-style bagels have arrived in PB! Mission Bagels is exactly what this neighborhood has been missing. Gabe, the owner, has brought something truly special to Pacific Beach with his mobile cart operation. Don't let the cart setup fool you - this is serious bagel craftsmanship. The Bagels: Dense, chewy, and crispy on the outside - exactly how a proper NY bagel should be. Today I had the everything bagel with scallion cream cheese, and it was spot-on authentic. The toasting technique is on point - crispy exterior while maintaining that essential chewy interior that separates real bagels from the imposters. The Experience: What sets Mission Bagels apart is the obvious love and dedication that goes into every single bagel. If you want to truly appreciate the craft, check out Gabe's Instagram stories (@mission.bagel) where he documents the entire process starting at 3 AM. Watching him work really makes you understand why these bagels taste so exceptional. Bagel-making is an art form, and Gabe is clearly a master craftsman. The Selection: Classic flavors done right - poppy, sesame, plain, and cinnamon raisin bagels with quality cream cheese options including lox, scallion, and egg salad. Sometimes simple is best, and Mission Bagels proves that completely. The Location Bonus: Serendipitously, the cart is positioned right next to Coffee Cycle (@coffeecycleroasting / yelp.com/biz/coffee-cycle-san-diego), a boutique coffee roastery with incredible pour-overs and espresso. This combo creates a true breakfast gem that rivals anything you'd find in Brooklyn or Manhattan. Bottom Line: Mission Bagels is a labor of love that shows in every bite. Gabe's dedication to authentic techniques and quality ingredients has created something special for Pacific Beach. I can't wait to see this operation grow - it deserves all the success coming its way. Do yourself a favor and grab a bagel from Mission Bagels. Your taste buds will thank you, and you'll be supporting a local business owner who truly cares about his craft. Pro tip: Get there early - these bagels are made fresh daily and when they're gone, they're gone!

Went back and got the lox schmear on everything (asked for extra), and oh my!!! Best bagel I've had since being in NY. Might even be better than any bagel I've ever had. They were out of poppy but I'm getting that next time. Thank you Gabe & team! I'll be a regular.

Best bagels in Pacific Beach without a doubt. Just the right amount of cheweyness. Ngl, they could go a little heavier on the everything seasoning but the bagel is so good itself that I'll let it slide & not gonna knock a star off. Service is phenomenal, friendly staff who remember you if you come in often. Yes, they are closed on Saturdays.... I assume they're Jewish owned so that makes sense. Saturday is their day of rest. Authentic bagels & whatnot. I like that they don't have a HUGE selection of bagel flavors... they do the classics and they do them well. I'd rather a bagel shop only have a handful of classic flavors done right than 30 flavors of mediocre bagels. Only additional flavor I wish they had was a jalapeño cheddar but mostly because I think they'd do well offering that particular flavor in San Diego. Overall I would recommend.

Great location. Friendly staff. Very impressed with the quality of bagel. One of the best around SD for sure. Will be back. Thanks!

I told my friend the food was worth the wait. After an hour we got sat at the bar and our first server was friendly. There was a transition of servers (not sure if he left for the day or went on lunch) and the new server would check on everyone at the bar except us. My water remained empty for most of the meal. The bartenders in front of us were clearly having a conversation and I didn't want to interrupt. My friend claimed her Irish coffee was sour? And didn't realize cheese came on a side of eggs (she should've checked when she ordered but the server never clarified either). We weren't checked on during the meal until the bill came and by then we just wanted to leave. I ordered the fluffy pancakes and found an egg shell inside. The cracking of eggshells in my mouth made me loose my appetite. We paid (still tipped of course) and left. It was great the first time and mediocre the second time. I prefer consistently in service, especially if I'm waiting an hour to be seated.

We had spent most of the day around Bankers Hill and decided to grab an early dinner at Books & Records. Getting reservations was easy, but from the moment we walked in, the ambiance alone already had us sold. The place was still pretty quiet when we arrived, and to our surprise it was happy hour, so naturally we ordered a bunch of items off the menu along with drinks. Everything was ridiculously good. Not one miss. What really stood out though was the attention to detail. The host brought us a complimentary glass of champagne after hearing we were celebrating our anniversary. Small gesture, big impact. Stuff like that matters. As the night went on, the restaurant filled up, live music started playing, and the whole atmosphere just came alive. Our waiter never rushed us once, which made the experience feel even more intentional and relaxed. We were able to actually enjoy the moment instead of feeling pushed through dinner service. Good food is one thing. Great hospitality is another. This place gave us both. Next time we're in San Diego, we're absolutely making it a point to come back. Lovely spot. Lovely experience.

Dennise seated us and was so kind, she even shared a few of her favorite menu items since it was our first visit. Our server Anelle was great as well. She was friendly, attentive, and helped us pick some really good dishes. We tried the Tacos Dorados de Papa, El Sampler de la Abuela, and La Bomba, and for appetizers the Burrito de Machaca con Frijoles Puercos and the sweet corn tamal (which ended up being my favorite). Cocina 35 is a popular Mexican brunch spot in San Diego, with 3 locations in the area. I secured a…read morereservation online for Sunday, and I'd recommend that given it does get busy. Cramped and loud, but nicely decorated and serving solid authentic meals. Mexican Latte-9/10: Pretty straightforward. A solid, nostalgic spiced coffee. Mazapan Latte-10/10: A novelty menu item, both nostalgic and tasty. With a sweetened condensed milk rim and mazapan dust, this sweet coffee is a must order. Chilaquiles-10/10: Cocina 35 knows how to throw down the best Mexican breakfast item: the chilaquiles. The Verde was good but didn't pack much heat. The Salsa Secreta was our favorite; a creamy 3-chile salsa with an artichoke flavor, this one packs an enjoyable amount of heat. The Chipotle was another yummy and creamy option, making your nose run but still very enjoyable. Frijoles Puercos-7/10: They were pretty standard. I've definitely had better. They served their purpose as a good side. Concha Rellena-7.5/10: Another creative menu item. Whipped cream and whole strawberries sandwiched between two french toast-style concha halves and drenched in cajeta. It was sweet and warm, but would've been more enjoyable with fresher and/or sliced strawberries. Fun to order, but a regular concha is better suited for enjoying with your coffee. Service-6/10: Again, Cocina 35 gets packed, so service isn't as attentive. Our party had to order and wait for water, ask for refills, call the server over for more orders and again for the bill, and wouldn't speak to us in Spanish. I witnessed other tables be spoken to in Spanish, but upon ordering I'd only be responded to in English. I know I'm a white Mexican, but native tongue is nice when I make it clear I'd like to order in Spanish. Overall, a fun spot with solid menu items. The samplers are pricey but probably the best bang for your buck. They do the classics very well, and are very much worth your visit!

"Over medium" eggs came barely cooked, still had clear egg gel floating around. The table next to us had the same issue. The fried chicken, which is beautiful looking, was strangely flavorless. Another table was also talking about this issue. Bacon was way overcooked as well. I also really dislike when food timing for a table is way off. I rather it stay in the kitchen under a heat lamp and come together rather that spend 5 minutes staring at my food being polite. So, for a fun "wow that's a ton of food" experience this is it.
