In the store was the owner and I guess his son. I was on the phone talking to my family. I asked the older gentlemen if he had Opps. He answered no. As I went to the register (which was about 10 mins or so later) I asked the younger son if he had opps. Very disrespectfully he replied "you already asked him and he told you no. So the answer is no! I asked who are you talking to? And he replied you! So I turned to the older gentleman and said is this how you talk to your customers. By this time I am getting angry. He then says to me, "you're just angry". That's when I lost it. I reminded them both that African Americans spend their money in the store the most. Black and brown ppl. Being as stupid as he is he says "oh pls" then begins to argue back . He then says you are irrelevant. Now I'm really angry! We are really arguing now. I'm going off. The owner says I'm gonna talk to him and I said no your not. So I told the owner, I will NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS STORE EVER AGAIN! Then I walked out. Honestly, this place isn't for everybody and I'd say it normally wouldn't be for me either but I…read moreneeded a quick solution to my hair so that I don't have to worry about it on vacation but I didn't want to pay $400. I'm only in NYC for 4 nights and decided to make this my first stop so I could forget about my hair for the whole trip. I found this place on tiktok was texting them the entire week before I got here just to make sure I knew exactly what I was getting into because I'm type A like that lol. I will say, they're not the greatest at responding professionally or particularly nicely, but don't let that discourage you if all you need is braids at a decent price and you want them done FAST. They weren't rude but they were also giving bare minimum-word-count-possible answers... so if that bothers you then this place might not be for you. I care a lot about my time and have no tolerance for people wasting it, so I tried to book an appointment, but they kept telling me to just walk in and not to worry about it. So I just showed up the earliest I could possibly show up which was around 11:35 AM, told them what I wanted, and they said they'd take me to their other location to start braiding. I just followed along like an idiot even though i'm not from here and have no idea where she was taking me. Luckily, it was just around the corner and she didn't decide to make a news story out of me. The lady told the braiders what I needed, and they found someone to take me downstairs and wash my hair. There was a little awkward moment where the braiders had to figure out who was going to take me, but eventually someone took me down to the weird, sketchy basement. For context I haven't had my braids professionally braided in 4 years (partly due to how overpriced they are in my city with low supply and low demand of this service) AND I saw tiktok reviews so I didn't really care that much because they quoted me $260 when I expected to pay $400. They washed my hair, and within about 20 minutes I was getting my hair blow-dried. About 10 minutes after that, one lady started parting and then 5 mins later another one joined her and they started braiding my hair. I kid you not, there were FOUR people braiding my hair at one point. I got these smedium boho braids done in exactly 3 hours of actual braiding. The last 30-40 minutes were just one person finishing up the bottom half of a few braids. Overall, it was definitely not the smoothest experience. The staff weren't the friendliest (if you're sensitive to that which I normally am), the environment wasn't the cleanest (i did see a cockroach in the bathroom which did gross me out)..... BUT I got braids that I like, at a decent price, and got out SO much sooner than I expected, especially considering I literally walked in on a random Thursday at 11:30 AM. So would I go back? Honestly, probably. If you care more about getting your braids done quickly and affordably than having a super polished salon experience, I'd recommend it lol.
