Whenever possible, I prefer to eschew Amazon in favor of local boutiques. Especially shops like…read moreBorn (and their sister shop B'tween for tweens) that have carefully curated selections of appropriately adorable items for the adorable baby that I am wholly unprepared to take care of. It's a small space, but they've got it jam packed with fun baby books, tiny toys (educational and otherwise), cute animal hats, excellent blankets (taco/lime/avocado FTW), footie pajamas, blocks, Brooklyn-specific shirts, onesies, and more. Yes, everything's a bit expensive, but such is life on Smith Street in Brooklyn. And sure, I'm not into everything they stock. Personally, I'm not going to purchase a shirt for my baby that says "Little Feminist." Not because I'm not a feminist or because I don't think she'll be a feminist, but because it's a (pretty expensive) shirt that loudly proclaims my unaware baby to be a feminist, and that says something that I'm not trying to say. But I'm glad Born is here, and I like a lot of the merchandise. I'm also really glad my wife's aunt was so nice as to purchase the delightful set of socks that momentarily captivated my wife. Know what I'm not that glad about? That on the bottom of every single sock in the set, it reads, "Trumpette." This may be a hip and internationally known baby clothing brand name, but in 2018, it's really saying something that I'm not trying to say.

Two of the Brooklyn's sweetest ladies helped me pick out a Christmas gift for my friend's toddler…read more- a reasonably priced (especially when compared to similar merchandise in other stores in this area) Brooklyn hoodie. The owner informed me that she personally created the design herself so finding anything that is uniquely created rather than mass produced is always a plus. In addition to children's toys and clothes, I noticed a few artsy home decorations and women's clothes articles. There was also a friendly cat named Whiskey napping in the store, but according to the owner he doesn't drink too much alcohol these days. This store is not large so selection may be somewhat limited, but the welcoming service and desire to support a small local business will definitely bring me back if I am ever in need of a gift for a child.

Awesome Things About Gumbo That Each Deserve a Star:…read more 1. The cute little dog that ran up to me when I walked in. 2. The name. (Not to be confused with the Gay DUMBO parties.) It reminds me of a tasty, roux-based soup. Can't be bad. 3. The small-town feel of the place. The proprietor is so nice and trusting. She walked out of the store to get change for another customer while I was perusing. How do you know I'm not a thief? Look at me! I'm shady! 4. The fun selection of clothes, toys, and odd gifts they have in stock. I personally only have illegitimate children, so I didn't purchase anything this time around. But that doesn't mean that I won't, provided that their mothers start returning my phone calls.

What an awesome children's clothing & accessory store!!…read more Having an immediate need for a swim suit for a four year old who doesn't like to try on clothes is, in itself, something of a challenge. But combine that with a Grandma (me) who has been sick and doesn't quite feel up to the fitting process can make it a daunting prospect. Picnic made the challenge a breeze. Not being satisfied with the children's shops I had previously frequented, on the way home from Preschool I pulled into street parking in Cobble Hill and searched Yelp for nearby stores. Then I used Yelp to call and inquire about the product and size I wanted. The employee at Picnic was warm and friendly. Best of all she told me they had lots of boys bathing suits in the right size range. The location was great. It was just around the corner from Court Street on what was mainly a brownstone block. Close muni meter parking on Court Street was relatively easy, requiring only one drive around the block. We walked into a beautifully laid out, bright and sunny, well stocked store. As we entered, the employee asked if I had called about the bathing suit. She was just as personable and friendly as on the phone. She pulled out wonderful swim suit and rash vest combos in several sizes. Realizing my struggle to accomplish the fitting task, she took over. Managing to get a four year old to take off his favorite shirt and be fitted in swim wear without complaint was a sight to behold. She even helped with the video chat with my son to get his opinion. What great service!! We chose an adorable Pufferfish set, which could be worn now but allowed room for rapid growth. The store's collection of quality merchandise is extensive. There is even a wall of awesome clocks to brighten up any child's room. We managed to leave with only one toy. Feeding my Grandson's planet obsession was a small'ish rubber ball earth. The awesome store employee was wonderful at assisting Grandma in convincing him to put all the other toys back on the shelf. Whew...... I'm so excited about the Pufferfish swim set purchase. And I'm delighted to have found this store. I can't wait to return for a more leisurely shopping trip.

Anyway, not even a hello but a "that stroller has to be parked outside, it's too big" I completely understand if I ignored a sign or the store was packed and I couldn't move around or was blocking the way but none of the above and she was super rude. Unfortunately, this store would never get my money. Right before the person was so rude I had a sunglasses in my hand to purchase. Congratulations, you've lost a customer....on Mother's Day too.
