Mircea came highly recommended from our real estate agent and did a terrific job on a partial remodel of our recently purchased Berkeley home. We needed to add a new bathroom and closet to our master bedroom, remodel an existing bathroom and do some foundation repair. We decided to live in our house during the construction, despite the significant work we were doing. Mircea was fantastic throughout the process. He was incredibly responsive -- always reachable by phone, willing to meet early in the morning and come on weekends. He also takes great pride in his work, and we appreciated how clean he kept our house throughout. Mircea is also very trustworthy -- he provided great counsel throughout the process, taking his time to talk us through issues and providing solid advice on how to address problems and save on costs. Mircea was also very helpful in navigating the permit process with the city, taking charge but always keeping us in the loop. I'm writing to recommend Mircea Ilie for construction big and small. He and his guys just built a fence for us last week, while taking great care of the roses that had been climbing up 8 feet of lattice. Now we have a sturdy and beautiful fence and all the roses are intact and ready to bloom! We had some issues near the end of our job, Mircea had some unexpected personal issues to attend to and was out of the area for some time. During that time, our job dragged on a bit under his foreman, the plumbing wasn't installed correctly and the floors saw a little bit of damage when the appliances were moved in. When Mircea came back he was very sorry and made great strides towards fixing everything up. I would say things run smoothly when he's around. We found it helpful to keep an itemized list of everything that was happening and needed to be done, which is good advice for any contractor job. We would hire again should the need arise. read more

Mircea has been a huge help in our whole home remodel. We bought a fixer last year and needed to replace the bathroom before we could move in. Mircea gave us a quote, a contract and a schedule and stuck to all of them. His guys worked over Thanksgiving so we could move in on time! He had lots of great design ideas, and always had the right person to do whatever needed to be done. He gave us good advice on upgrading the electrical and plumbing systems with an eye to future expansion, and very reasonable prices. In addition to remodeling (replacing really) the bathroom, he has replaced many of our windows, rebuilt the foundation and did seismic upgrading, and rebuilt the front porch. We are repeat customers of Mircea Ilie who, over the years, has completed three projects on our house. Mircea takes great pride in his work and it shows in his attention to detail and his love of craftsmanship. He doesn't skimp on materials and doesn't rush things. But, because he works with a large crew, he gets the job done relatively quickly. And all for a reasonable, fair price. Just recently, Mircea finished the addition of master bedroom + small study + bathroom, turning what used to be our 2-bedroom bungalow into a 3-bedroom house. As in the previous two projects, my spouse and I were completely satisfied and pleased with the outcome. Our new addition is exactly what we had in mind because Mircea worked so closely with us and he had such great suggestions along the way, never pushing and always respecting our vision. Mircea helped us from the initial steps of working with the architect on the plans, getting permits from the city of Berkeley, all steps of the construction, and even helped pick out the perfect finishings. Our previous two projects with Mircea were smaller scale, but he put just as much attention and effort into them, too. Our first acquaintance with him was several years ago when we our garage was decimated by dry rot. Mircea gutted and remodeled the whole garage, keeping the original footprint but transforming it into a beautiful and solid structure that can now do double duty as a garage, study, or living space. We were so impressed with the results, that we didn't hesitate to hire him a year later when we decided to expand our closets and to replace several old windows with double-pane windows. Although it was a relatively small project, Mircea approached the job with his customary attention to detail and figured out the best way to use / expand space in our house for much nicer, more spacious closets, in which he installed great-looking and very practical shelving. Very Good. I'm a repeat user and a fan! Mircea has done two jobs for us in Oakland. A modest remodel of our second story about 6 years ago and a demo/repair/rebuild of an upstairs patio that was leaking water into our downstairs master bath during the heavy rainstorms this past winter. The fact that we chose to go back to Mircea for this recent problem is quite telling. We needed someone that would react quickly and that we could trust. With the heavy rains, he understood immediately that he needed to act quickly. He sent a crew out before the next rainstorm to fully protect the patio with a huge tarp. He was able to get the job done between (and sometimes during) storms over the next several weeks (including Thanksgiving and xmas weekends). I know he was just fitting us in between his other jobs but that was to be expected considering this unscheduled emergency. We appreciated how he reacted and treated us considering our dire situation. He gave me a rough estimate before he started but couldn't give a fixed price because it was impossible to tell how much damage had occurred underneath the patio. He wound up charging us about 30% more than his estimate but I feel he earned it because of the quality of workmanship and his responsiveness. Both this time and the first time, we found his workers very pleasant to have around and considerate of our home. I feel that Mirea will come through for us when we need him. There are two weaknesses, though, in his service that I can see. First, he rarely (if ever, I don't remember) gives you anything on paper (probably my fault). The verbal quotes he's given me have always been very reasonable and he's been reasonable (I think, anyway) with his explanations for unexpected expenses. So I've never felt the need to force him into a solid contract/price - basically, I feel that I can trust him to be fair. Second, while his workers always seem very pleasant and friendly, on some days, Mircea himself can come across somewhat gruff and frustrated (after all, he's a small business owner in today's economy. It can't be easy!). This doesn't bother me, but if you're the type that needs "kisses and flowers" from your contractor, his personality on occasion may be off-putting. I purchased a Big Deal offer they advertised on Angie's List of 40 Hours of General Contractor Work for $995 back in August 2014. I emailed them and called several times but never heard back. I finally got a hold of them in October and spoke to an associate or relative who told me that Mr. Ilie/Mircea was in Europe. I gave my info to him so Mr. Ilie/Mircea could return my call when he got back but he did not. I then was out of town myself and so did not contact them again until December. I spoke with his wife this time who said she'd pass the message on but again, did not hear back. I then left a message stating that I would be leaving negative feedback on Angie's list and Yelp about him not honoring the Big Deal I purchased from him. Lo and behold. I finally got a call back. Despite him claiming to not have gotten my messages, I asked to schedule the work I had purchased. He started to say that he was busy, would be traveling again, and that he would have to come out and give me a bid in early March for the work I needed done. I reminded him that I just needed him to honor the 40 hours of work for the price advertised and paid for. (I also told him the work I needed done should only take 30 hours at most and could be done by a lower level handyman.) He rambled on making excuses saying he could not do this, that he needs to make a profit, and that Angie"s List had made a mistake in placing the ad. I own several rental properties and have quite a bit of experience with contractors and such but I have never encountered someone as unprofessional and unscrupulous as Mircea Ilie. Also I am apparently not the only one he did this with, so beware! read more

I hired Mircea Ilie to refurnish my deck and to repaint my entire house. After speaking with a couple other contractors, I felt that he came up with the best idea for my deck to turn the redwood planks over and rescrew them instead of just resanding the same surface or buying new redwood. He used only the best materials (paint with 25 year warranty) and put on at least three coats for both the deck and the walls. Efficiency and speed was important to me as I had a one-year old and wanted to minimize the noise and debris. He managed to finish in half the estimated time and was very considerate of my needs, even going out of his way to appease my neighbors. We were lucky to have Mircea Ilie as our general contractor. We had just bought an old house in need of more repairs than we originally realized, and the general contractor we had lined up to start our renovation project vanished and left us in the lurch. The house we bought turned out to need work in nearly every component -- including a new roof, repairing cracks in the interiror walls and painting throughout, repairing and refinishing hardwood floors, a new wiring system, a complete bathroom renovation, foundation work, and a new concrete driveway to replace a useless gravel driveway. When we met with Mircea, we felt that he was both experienced and practical, and that he understood what we wanted to acocmplish. He provided us with a bid that was neither the highest or the lowest, and gave us a target date that we all agreed with. Mircea's crew performed admirably in all aspects of the work, showing up every day and working efficiently. Even when there were "surprises" -- for example, a missing joist in the foundation or dry rot in the gables -- Mircea provided solutions that didn't cost too much or take too long. Although we were at times very picky, he met all our demands and made sure that we were satisfied. Mircea is that rare general contractor who puts the quality of the work above the profit he makes -- for example, he put extra coats of finish on our hardwood floors to make sure they met his criteria, and they are beautiful. This renovation project is now done -- on time and at a reasonable price -- and we are very happy and satisfied customors. We were thrilled with the 2005 renovation of our 1911 North Berkeley craftsman home, expressly due to Mircea's work ethic and his crew. He works tirelessly and without complaint as he puts his heart and soul into everything he tackles. An added bonus is the fact that Mircea has fine taste so he is a perfect consultant with respect to colors, finishes and other design questions.
