This place had been recommended by a couple of friends, but we had no idea how good it would be…read more The menu offers a large selection of savory crepes; I think they also had sweet, but we didn't look at those. We ended up going for dinner twice in less than a week, and we got six different crepes. These aren't street crepes that taste and look fried (not that that's a bad thing!). They seem fresh and less greasy. The first time around, I got a ratatouille crepe, which was excellent. My wife got a curry crepe, and she loved it. They had other meat, seafood, cheeses, fun names and ingredients that you wouldn't even think of. The location is at the far east end of the tourist strip, so it's a little less crazy than just a couple of blocks away. The entrance is a bit hidden even though it's just off the street. It's in a cellar, which keeps it cooler, although it can get crowded quickly. We didn't have reservations, but we showed up right when it opened and found out that it fills up quickly. The prices are cheap for the size and quality of the crepes: everything runs from about $3 to $7. Just remember: cash only!

The specialty of the house are the brochettes -- fish, meat, and/or vegetables cooked on a skewer, On a quiet Sunday night in May, we had the place to ourselves and the full attention of the owner-chef. Although there were three of us, the seafood menu for two was plenty of food and every bite was delicious. Roasted fish can be dry, but at Palais des Princes the "daurade" is stuffed with a creamy paste that keeps it moist and adds an exquisite flavor. The brochettes also featured zucchini flowers stuffed with a paste made from seaweed -- truly exceptional. After the brochettes, we had a cheese plate featuring five great local cheeses. The bread that came alongside was the best I have eaten in France, or anywhere else. Once we finished that we had no room for dessert, but the chef insisted we cap off the meal in a proper way, so he treated us to some of his homemade liquers and asked us to guess what they contained. We did pretty well, but I won't tell you what they were so you can have the fun of guessing for yourself. At 52 euros the menu for two is a bargain for food of this exceptional quality. We plan to return later in the week to try the meat brochettes.

I had the lemon pie for dessert and it was one of the best desserts I've had. It came with a shot glass of lemon ice which was a nice touch. Menton is known for their lemons so I knew anything with lemon would be gold. It's a small place with outdoor seating. Prices were a little high. Food was good overall but the menu was lacking. It was very small and only had about 7-10 options. Half of those options are fish and ones that I wouldn't eat like raw salmon and snail.
